Welcome from niKKiWow, I can’t believe how busy December was!As well as hosting the Scotty’s Xmas Party (see page 8!) we also sent Christmas gifts out to everyone of our 190 Scotty Members. Each year we like to do something different and this year we gave our Members the opportunity to create an online wish list and we did our best to source presents they really wanted. I’ve nev-er seen so many Lego, Tablets, PS Vita’s and Frozen toys, as well as the odd guiter as well! I hope all our Scotty families had a safe and fun Christmas.

a note from oUr ceoWelcome to the second issue of our ‘Stripes’ magazine and thank you to everyone who commented and messaged us about the first issue at the

end of last year. It’s great to see you all found the magazine useful and hopefully you will enjoy this one just as much.As Nikki said above December was frantic but the work doesn’t stop now. It’s important that despite our troop’s withdrawal from Afghanistan we are all aware of the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and their families. For our Scotty Members the jour-ney is only just beginning and we will be there with them all the way, however they need us.

For some it’s just little reminders that we are thinking of them, a gift on their birthday or a Rememberance Voucher. For others they will need a little more support, perhaps through our partnership with bereavement experts Winston’s Wish. Many of our older Members will benefit this year from our new Higher Education and Driving Lesson Grants. There are so many ways we can support the children of our fallen he-roes but to do so we need your continued support also. Thank you.

Our latest Scotty Lodge opened it’s doors in December. Lynzy Savage and son Connor officially opened the Lodge at Haggerston Castle near Berwick Upon Tweed. This is the fourth Scotty Lodge to open and plans are now in development to open a fifth in the South of England.CEO Stuart Robinson said “the Haggerston Castle site is a beautiful park and an amazing Lodge. This will make it so much easier for our Members based in the North of England and Scotland to enjoy a Scotty Break. Our next task is to fill the gap in the South East of England before we start to plan ahead to 2016 and a different project potentially in the Midlands.” Find out more on page16.

The ball took place at the Park Lane Hilton on 22nd November and raised £22,000 for Scotty’s alone! A fantastic amount and thank you to the Hilton Foundation and everyone involved.

Scotty’s Founder Nikki will feature in an ITV documentary airing on ITV1 at 9pm on 10th February. The programme, called Young War Widows, looks at how three young war widows have dealt with their loss and are attempting to rebuild their lives.Nikki said “I’m not keen on doing interviews but realise it is a great way to help promote the charity. I was also keen to help other widows realise that it is possible to find love again and whilst we never forget we can build new lives.”The documentary was filmed toward the end of 2014 and advanced previews have been well received. Scotty’s Chief Exec Stuart Robinson added “it’s very brave for young widows like Nikki to put themselves out there in order to help others in a similar position. Hopefully the documentary will be an insight into what these young ladies have had to deal with and the strength involved in moving on with their lives.”

The 2nd ever Scotty’s Christmas Party, exclusively for Scotty Members, took place in December at Manchester’s Event City. Here’s the low down on another fantastic party... Following the success of the first Scotty’s Xmas Party at Alton Towers last year the pressure was on Nikki and the Entertain-ment Today team to create an event up to the high standards already set.

This year’s party took place in December at Event City in Manchester’s Trafford Park area with a Christmas Fun Fair theme.

99 Scotty Members came along with many of the families staying in the nearby Premier Inn the evening before. The charity tries to ensure there are no barriers to prevent the children enjoying the activities on offer so all travel and overnight accomodation expenses are covered by Scotty’s.

At 11am the first coach arrived at the venue and the children began to enjoy the wide range of activities on offer. From fair ground rides and craft activities to panto’s and football coaching, all ages were ca-tered for.

Popcorn, candyfloss and hotdogs were

available throughout the day and every Member was presented with a gift by Santa in his Grotto. Scotty’s Founder Nikki was over the moon at how successful the event was and said “it’s so amazing to see the all the smiles on the kids faces. This is exactly why we start-ed Scotty’s, to help their children smile.”

Chief Exec, Stuart Robinson added “as well as having a fantastic day out we can see the children forming very special bonds with other Scotty Members who all share very similar experiences. We’re sure that these friendships will have a huge impact in dealing with their bereavement and that they will be there to support one another for years to come.”

www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk

“The cost of running the Scotty’s Christmas Party is covered by the amazing fundraising and donations from the general public, with-out whom the event would not happen. So thank you all so much.” - Nikki

the lonG roaD...alan Knell

www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk

Stripes Magazine: Alan, you’re organising the ‘March to Remember’ event this summer. Tell us what’s involved and where you are walking to / from.

Alan Knell: Well the plan is to walk 200 miles across France, the route is pretty amazing and it all starts in Portsmouth at the Naval War

another year anD another amaZinG challenGe for lonG time scotty fUnDraiser alan Knell anD frienDs.

Memorial in Southsea, as we wanted to follow the same footsteps as many of the brave men that sailed to France. Once in France we start the French leg of the route on Omaha Beach, and visit many of the D Day sites. The hardest part of the route will be the cross country leg across the French countryside to the Somme Region, where we will visit many of the war graves of WW1, the finish line will be Mametz Wood, the site of a British offensive that cost the lives of 7000 Welshmen in one day.

SM: Walking is easy though, right?AK: I wish! The strain the body is under from walking 13 hours a day is exhausting, and we need to do this 5 days in a row, it’s pretty much 8 back to back marathons at a snail pace! At some point pretty much every part of the body aches somewhere, but you just have to grit your teeth and push through it, remembering why you are out there.

SM: Why did you decide to organise this event and to support Scotty’s whilst doing it?AK: Scotty’s do a brilliant job at supporting the kids of our fallen heroes, having been privileged enough to see how the donations can make such a positive impact on the lives of the Scotty’s mem-bers, it’s only natural to keep supporting Scotty’s and making sure the good memories keep going for the little ones.

SM: How many of you are there in your team?AK: We have 17 walkers on the team, we have been shocked to be honest by the amount of people wanting to take part, we could have taken many more! We also have a fantastic support team coming with us, including some amazing medical support from the aptly named Pain Clinic, they are coming along to help the legs keep going!

SM: What do you think the main challenges the team members will come up against?AK: Clearly the fatigue and poor state our feet will get in will be the main worry to the team, but there are also many other factors that will effect us such as walking in the peak of the summer sun in open countryside, but mentally this will push everyone to their limits at some point, we just need to make sure that everyone supports all the team membersm last year we had a pratice 150 mile walk, so we know pretty much what we are walking into. It would also appear that non of the team can speak much French, so we need to hope that the French people we meet along the way are a better educated than us and can speak English!

Page 11: Stripes Magazine Jan / Feb

the WorlD recorD team

www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk

SM: What’s the best way for us to keep up to date with your progress?AK: We have a facebook page and Twitter account you can follow, here we will give running updates of the walk and all the places we are visiting, we really want everyone to be part of the walk. Our Face-book page is March To Remember, Twitter is @MarchToRemember

SM: If our readers would like to sponsor the team how do they go about it?AK: We have a Just Giving page all setup, if people wanted to donate they could use my page - https://www.justgiving.com/Alan-Knell-M2R/ the team combined have already raised over £1500 and we have 6 months to go! There is also a text number for donations, just text “MTOR50 £?” to 70070. We are also going to send each person that donates the name of a soldier/ sailor or Airmen that is buried along the route to remember.

SM: This isn’t the first event you have helped organise for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, what else have you done for the charity?AK: No, over the last few years we have setup some amazing events! The main event would be hosting the World Record 25 Hour Rugby match at Leicester Tigers, it was mind blowing the amount of support the game got and from all around the world, there were even rugby forums in Australia talking about the match! The match forged so many lifelong friendships and raised a stunning £66,000..... but the lasting memory all the players and staff will remember was the beaming faces of the Scotty’s members that were the games VIP’s, will never forget that!

Be sure to give the ‘March to Remember’ guys a like on Facebook to follow their progress leading up to the event and for the actual walk itself this summer.

Has Alan inspired you to organise an event this summer? Feel free to get in touch with us at [email protected] or 01553 763000 to talk through your ideas.

oUr neW homeJanuary 2015, the start of a new year and a new era for Scotty’s.Having spent the past 2 year’s at the charity’s first proper office in King’s Lynn, January sees Scotty’s move to a larger home.CEO Stuart Robinson explains why it was time to move on...

Tell us why you decided to move to a new site:The move has come about due to the growth of the charity and the number of children we are now sup-porting. The small storage garage next to our existing office were we store merchandise items, fundraising equipment such as gazebos and banners and also where the gifts for Scotty Members are kept was at bursting point. In fact we were having to use outside storage just to keep everything secure. We are also hoping to take on 2 extra people this year, one to assist with fundraising activities and one to look after our accounts. As the charity grows the small team here need that extra support. It’s important to remember that this is a long term project, some of our Members are just babies and we want to develop a charity which will be there to sup-port them throughout their childhood.

What are the benefits of this particular site? The new site has plenty of storage space, in fact a little more than we need today but we were keen not to have to move again in 2 year’s time so hopefully we

have found a long term home for the charity. We managed to negociate a great deal with the land-lord (the local council) which means the charity isn’t paying the full rent for severnal years. It means we have time to grow into the new site.

It looks like a little work is needed?A part of the deal was that if the council were going to support us financially with the move we would need to decorate the offices ourselves and they are a little run down. Fortunately as a charity with some amazing supporters we’ve been busy over Christmas working away and it’s now coming together.

The charity initially started in Tidworth, why is the HQ now in Norfolk? When Lee was killed in Afghanstan he and Nikki were based in Tidworth and that is where Nikki orginally registered the charity. Not long after that she and the children moved backed to Norfolk where Nikki and Lee had met and married, to be closer to family. The first official Scotty office was in King’s Lynn.

Remind us of the new address:It’s Scotty’s Little Soldiers, Unit 21, Bergen Way, King’s Lynn, Norfolk PE30 2JQ

We’ll have a full report on the opening ceremony of the new HQ in our next issue of Stripes Magazine.

hoW scotty’s helPs...By reading this issue of Stripes magazine you are already supporting Scotty’s and the children of our fallen heroes. But here is our latest update on how the charity has been helping these brave young people.

On the 23rd January this year we launched a new website exclusively for our Member families, we call it the Member Zone. The idea of the Member Zone is to have one convenient place for our Member’s to visit and find out about all the amazing activities and support available to them. The site is split into three areas; Smiles, Support and Strides.

By visiting the Smiles section our Members can read about all the great, fun actitivites available - all designed to put a smile on their faces. This includes booking Scotty Breaks at our Lodges or at Center Parcs. We also have a range of weekend breaks at Legoland and Alton Towers available too.Smiles is also the place to go to find out about the latest Xmas Party and upcoming events.

By heading over to the Support pages our Members can find out about bereavement counselling, provided by Winston’s Wish and funded by Help for Heroes. The service is available to all Scotty families.

The Strides section of the website tells our families more about the grants we have available.New for 2015 are the Driving Lessons scheme available to Members aged 17+ and our Higher Education grant. The extremely popular Scotty Allowance can be accessed here too. The Allowance is available to every Scotty Member and can be spent on school clubs, after school activities, music lessons, educational trips or sports clubs. At

the end of each year the allowance is refreshed. We hope the Member Zone will mean more of our Members will take up the benefits available to them and hopefully provide answers to frequently asked questions.

Within just a few hours of launching the site over 40 holidays were booked up by Member families.

Today the charity is supporting 192 children but we are well aware that there are hundreds more young people throughout the UK who could be benefiting from our support. The more awareness of Scotty’s Little Soldiers raised, the more children will find out about the support they could receive. We need your help to spread the word; like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter, subscribe to our newsletter, proudly wear a Scotty’s T-Shirt or display a Scotty’s sticker in your car window - it all helps increase awareness of the charity.

Remember that Scotty’s supports all British Forces, not just the Army, and the child’s parent doesn’t not have to have lost their life in combat. We support those who have lost a parent through accidents and illness too.Regular and Reserve families are equally supported.

If you know a child that could benefit from the activities provided by Scotty’s Little Soldiers please call 01553 763000 or email Nikki directly at [email protected].

school in King’s Lynn and spent a lot of time together so I also became close with Nikki over the years. Losing touch when we all moved away, as can often happen, I was shocked to hear about Nikki’s devastating news in 2009 and felt compelled to help. After running the Windsor Half I wanted to get more involved and quickly began to support Nikki and Stu with a various pieces background work in running the charity and identifying corporate sponsors. I supported Nikki in developing and landing the Tesco clothing relationship which continues to drive excellent awareness and funds for the charity and helped secure a number of corporate donations and grants during those early years.I am immensely proud to say that I am now Chair of the Trustee group for the Scotty’s, a role which is extremely important to me and helps provide Nikki and Stuart with the support they both need to run the charity. Day to day I work as Managing Director for a large firm based in Cambridgeshire so I am able to bring a good level of experience and insight to the charity and support the growth we are looking to achieve. We have a group of 4 trustees, including me, who are actively involved in all strategic and financial decisions. As a group we are extremely passionate about making sure we stay focussed on our mission to help make the children of our fallen heroes smile. As the team work hard to raise funds across the UK it is our role to ensure that Nikki and Stuart have the support they need to invest in the right areas and ensure we deliver on our commitments. As a group we meet every 3 to 4 months as well as at our annual strategy meeting and AGM – not to mention countless email and phone discussions in the interim. Nikki and Stuart provide excellent leadership for the charity and you will struggle to find two people more passionate and committed to their jobs. They both know first hand just how important the work that Scotty’s does is to our members and, as a group, we are completely focussed on reaching every child in the UK who has been affected by the loss of a parent who was serving in the British Armed Forces.

in safe hanDsWhilst the day to day running of Scotty’s is handled by Founder Nikki and Chief Exec Stuart, it’s important to remember that they answer to a board of Trustees. Major decisions and the overall strategy of the charity are carried out with the support of the board. Chair of the Trustees, Jason Worthy, talks about his involvement with Scotty’s.

I have been involved with Scotty’s Little Soldiers in some way since the very early days – my first event for Scotty’s was running the Windsor Half Marathon dressed as Scotty which, at the time, seemed like a fantastic way to raise awareness for such an important new charity. It turned out that I chose the hottest day of the year so it was like an oven in the Scotty outfit! I still actively fundraise - in 2013 I was part of the 44 man team who beat the World Record for the longest rugby match in history at Welford Road and this year I will be part of a team walking from over 200 miles from Omaha Beach to the battlefields of the Somme to raise more money and awareness.Stuart (our Chief Exec) and I were best friends at secondary

Our newest Scotty Lodge at Haggerston Castle, near Berwick-upon-Tweek offers the same great activities that all Scotty Lodges do but with a slightly different take on things. As well as all the fantastic entertainment and fun activities you would expect to find at a modern Haven holiday park, Haggerston Castle excels at offering kids the chance to get outside and get active.Chief Exec Stuart Robinson visited the site and said “one of the thing’s that stood out were the activities run by the park Rangers, they organise nature trails, pony treks, camp building activities among other. So as well as the swimming pool, the arcade and all the other modern entertain-ment on offer, there are also some great outdoor activities available.”The Scotty Lodge, like all our Lodges to date, is brand new and features a double bedroom, two twin rooms plus additional sleeping in the lounge area. The kitchen is fully equiped and before opening the Lodge Nikki drove up to Berwick to put the usual Scotty stamp on things. “The Lodg-es are fantastic as they come but we like to make

sure they are tailored just right for our Members. So we kit them out with toys, cots, spare nappies, in fact pretty much anything a family could need on a break. Sometimes a family needs a break from coping with their everyday grief and might book a last minute weekend at a Scotty Lodge. We want them to be able to jump in the car or on the train and not have to worry about packing too much.”Scotty’s was honoured that Scotty Member Con-nor and mum Lynzy Savage agreed to officially open the Lodge for the charity at the end of 2014. Bookings are now being taken for 2015 for Scotty Members via the Member Zone website.

fUnDraise for the chilDren of oUr fallen heroesAt Scotty’s we have made a promise to our brave young Members that we will be here to support them throughout their childhood. In some cases that will be for the next 18 years & in order to keep that promise we need your help to continue to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Here’s the low down on how to fundraise for Scotty’s...

www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk

If you’re thinking about organising your own fundraising event here are some useful tips on how to do it.

1. Pick an activity - many of our most successful fundraisers start out with something simple, for example maybe a cake sale at work or a fancy dress party. 2. Register your event - pop along to the Scotty’s website and register your fundraising by answering a few questions on the fundraise page.3. Read through your fundraising pack - We’ll email you a fundraising pack with even more tips and advice together with your unique Scotty’s Event code.4. Raise funds - the easiest way to raise sponsorship is to use an online giving site, that way the money is sent directly to Scotty’s by the website you use. You can also make card pay-ments via our website, over the phone , send us a cheque or pay your funds raised directly into the charity’s bank account. Check your fundraising pack for more information.5. Enjoy your fundraising - remember to enjoy your fundraising!

We neeD yoUr helP:VolUnteer for scotty’sHere’s a Q&A with regular volunteer Paul Ross...SM: Paul, fundraising isn’t all about climbing mountains and playing in marathon rugby matches, tell us how you have been supporting Scotty’s?PR: I tend riase awareness and funds for Scotty’s by giving talks to lions clubs, rotary clubs, freemasons, organisating stalls at local fetes & county shows, and holding bucket collections at supermarkets.SM: Which area of the country do you cover?PR: My offical area is Surrey. But as Nikki’s stunt double I’ll go anywhere needed to spread the word.SM: As the charity only has a small team working for it, it’s important for volunteers to be pro-active and organise their own events and collections. What advice would you give someone who wants to fundraise for Scotty’s but doesn’t know where to start?.PR: Talk to friends who maybe members of lions clubs, freemason etc to see if can give a talk to their group and also speak to supermarkets as many allow bucket collections for charities. If you have a local market see if you can get a stall during Armed Forces Day. Local pubs / clubs might have a collection pot or a charity evening. If doing a stall / bucket collection, find out if you need a street collectors licence from your local council. It costs nothing but if you do not have one they can stop you collecting and ask you to leave. Contact the council licence office a month before to get a license.SM: When you have a stall or collection, what are your top tips for making it a success?PR: You need to be organised (gazebo, chairs, tables, brew kit, change if selling items). If you’re doing a stall at county shows / fetes see if you can get a shop in a box and leaflets. Get yourself a Scotty’s hoody and be outside your stall offering public leaflets and talk to them telling them about the charity, why it was set up etc. Make sure you get the latest up to date info from HQ.SM: You’ve been known to dress up in the Scotty mascot on more than one occasion, what’s it like in the suit!? PR: In the summer its chuffing hot, and I suggest shorts and tee shirt worn underneath! Only do 30 mins max if hot. In the winter its the warmest place to be.SM: Do you have any fundraising plans yet for 2015?PR: Where do I start, Iceman in Feb, Egham Royal Show, Surrey County Show, Ashford on the map, local Lions fete, Armed forces day, trying to get on at Shoreham air show, Weyfest, talks to freemasons, lions. Oh and whatever Debbie or Nikki ask me to help at!SM: Any final tips for new fundraisers Paul?PR: Last but not least smile, enjoy yourself and dress for the weather, namely good footwear. Thanks to Paul Ross for answering our questions and for his ongoing support.
