The year 2013 is going to be an amazing year in Albany and at the Albany AreaChamber of Commerce! We have so much to celebrate this past year, but ourcontinued success depends on our plans for the future and our ability to carrythem out.As a small business owner, I have experienced first-hand what Chamber
membership can do for business. I’ve learned the hard way, you get out of lifewhat you put into life…and it’s been a valuable lesson. This year, as the Chamber leadership begins our plan of work, we will be
striving hard to deliver even more value to our members…new benefits, newopportunities to be involved, new ideas and recruiting new members. As chamber members I challenge you to be an active part of your chamber.
You will be amazed at the benefits you will reap by networking and attendingevents. Join us for a Rise N Shine Breakfast and a Business After Hours this year. You will meet new business contacts and grow your business! You can find out allthe details about our Chamber events in our e-newsletter. If you do not receive it,call us and we’ll make sure you are on the list.We will be unveiling our new website the first quarter of 2013. The new site
will make it easier for you to get your business’ message to the more than 2-million visitors that browse thechamber site at www.albanyga.com.There are a number of very active committees that need your input and help: Education, Legislative Affairs,
Tourism, Small Business, Leadership Development, and Allies. As chamber members we welcome your ideasand input. We have an outstanding and talented staff at the chamber willing and ready to serve and work with our
members. They are a valuable resource for you, as members. As I begin my year as Chair, I have three goals: to bring more new members into our chamber, bring more

You can help me do this by being optimistic, inclusive, and keeping a community mindedspirit. So, as we kick off the new year, come join us! Be a part of your chamber and help us make 2013 an

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEOAdaptation or Change? Actually It’s Both
As with any organization that experiences a transition in leadership, change of some type isusually a foregone conclusion. The only question is to what degree? Albert Einstein once said“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed withoutchanging our thinking”.
There are so many truths to that statement I honestly don’t know where to begin. The onething I am sure of is that we, as an organization, must change our method of thinking and adaptto the makeup of our community if we are to continue to be relevant to our membership andarea businesses. It is important for us to celebrate our successes but it is vital that we addressthose areas where we have not been as successful.
The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce has a proud history of successes, more than I canmention with the limited amount of space that I have. With that being said, I must say there havealso been failures that we cannot ignore any longer. One of those we must begin addressing nowis how we have failed to adapt to a changing business community. Businesses large and small
have been forced by the economy to change how they operate, as well as how they interact with their customers. This iswhere I believe we as a Chamber of Commerce have fallen short.
We have not addressed incorporating our own changes in how we operate, specifically in how we address the concernsand issues within our own membership. I don’t believe we have necessarily turned the other cheek as much as we havebeen hesitant to address what our core values are. We have not adapted well at addressing the single most important wordthat you will find in our mission statement: membership.
We must adapt to the changing scope of our membership which has been in a steady decline recently, largely due to theeconomy. There are numerous ways we will adapt and change in 2013, but the most important is placing a greateremphasis on our membership. We invite you to help us grow, adapt and change so we are better equipped to be what Ibelieve we can be; the best service providing organization in Southwest Georgia.

It is often said, “To whom much is given, much is required,” and we at Marine CorpsLogistics Base Albany require much from our Marines, Civilian-Marines and Sailors. Manymembers of our workforce are surpassing many of my expectations as they involvethemselves in mentorship programs with other schools such as the International StudiesElementary Charter School and Dougherty Comprehensive High School. Such programsinclude the MISTA program (Motivating, Inspiring, Students, To, Achieve) which introducesrole models to at-risk high school students. Other members of our workforce are alsoinvolved in M.I.A. (Mentors, In, Action), which focuses primarily on the growth of allstudents academically, physically and emotionally by motivating students to strive forexcellence. Although these young men and women have proven their enthusiasm by volunteering
for these programs, the following year will provide new and exciting opportunities as welook to broaden our focus to other schools and institutions whose young people canbenefit from the guidance of a uniformed Marine or Sailor as well as a Civilian-Marine. However, their involvement with the local community is not limited to young people.
Through their own initiatives, our workforce has chosen to give back to the localcommunity in a myriad of ways, whether it is through their local churches, coaching little league, or teaching financialliteracy to others.Embodying the concept of Country, Corps and Community, their influence not only spreads the ideas of selfless service,
education and good citizenship, but also spreads hope in the face of economic hardship. It’s also no secret our uniformed members never stay at a base or station for very long. For this reason we challenge
Marines and Sailors to leave a piece of themselves here before they leave, whether it’s their knowledge or experience or thelasting relationships they build while serving the public. This is not a recruiting tool for the Marine Corps, but a recruiting tool for good citizens. We share the tools of our trade in
regard to initiative, integrity, and having a concept beyond oneself. More importantly, we share a determination to alwaysstrive and never give-up in the face of adversity. Not only have we taken it upon ourselves to do this we ask for those whoare able in this community to help us with these efforts. Many of you already have thorough programs sponsored by theChamber of Commerce and I applaud your continued success in doing so. We stand as fellow Americans and we want the community to keep this in mind first and foremost. Together WE CAN
overcome the obstacles in our path. We are One Nation, One Corps, One Community, under God, indivisible with libertyand justice for all. Thank you and God bless.
