The wonderful 80th celebration held at the Blundstone Arena in July was nothing short of magnificent. Emma was at the helm and orchestrated the night. After enjoying the night, Emma returned to ensure everything was finalised. I would like to thank Emma for her hard work and dedication to the Club and hope to see her around for many years to come. Just on that point, the 80th celebration was complemented by the anniversary magazine. Turning to Tania, who has been the Junior Boys Coordinator for numerous years. In her tenure, Tania has overseen the growth of the Derwent boys with the addition of 1-2 teams, as well as the introduction of the Under 8 & 10 competition (something that Tania holds dear). She has welcomed and introduced numerous new families to the Club, working hard with Kath Westland. The work of Tania and Kath, makes Derwent the envy of other clubs. There aremore external (non-Derwent) meetings, more expenses and more competinginterests for the Club. It may not soundvery enticing to “help out”, howeverthe saying many hands make lightwork has never been more apt. I willreturn to this later.

The 2015 Committee has been nothingshort of amazing. With the departure of Tania and theimminent departure of Kath, 2016 is atransitional year for the junior club.Upon review, the existing JuniorCoordinator roles (one for the boys, one for the girls) have simply becometoo large for two people to do the jobby themselves. In the future, the Clubwill look at having 1 Junior Coordinatorwho will head up a Sub-committee.The Sub-committee will consist of anumber of people who will oversee thenumerous teams, whether it is the U8’s& U10’s or the Under 12/Under 14’s(boys or girls) by way of example.

We are lucky in 2016 both Tania andKath have agreed to oversee a“handover” for the future. In additionTed Taylor has agreed to oversee theaccreditation of our junior coaches. Weare extremely fortunate that threeexperienced people within the club areprepared to secure the success for thefuture of the club in the juniors.

In 2015 the Club focus was on the 80thcelebrations and apart from the BBQ’s(lead by Nat Fahey & Jenny Middleton, for that I thank them) and the raffle, there has been very little fundraising.

The Committee every year consistentlybattle with the finances and what costsare passed onto players/parents. JohnHarris works hard to keep costs at aminimum. Jim Ansell worked hard onthe sponsorship front, to also assist.

In 2015, Jim ensured the renewal ofthe relationship between Millington’sand Derwent for a further 5 years.Without their patronage, costs wouldhave been significantly raised.

Nick Tremayne was integral inrenewing the sponsorship with Princeof Wales Hotel. In addition wewelcomed a new sponsor Turnbullswho are our Junior Sponsor – the firstjunior sponsor in a significant period oftime.

We also added the sponsors, Bob-Jane T-Mart, Littlewood Strawberry &Fresh Local Lamb Farm; TaylorElectrical, Monsoon, Abetz CurtisLawyers, PA design, WonderfulWardrobes, Hockey Nuts, Tempus,Zero Davey, Salamanca Financial,Premium Business Group, Abel Labels& Bug Rid Man. I thank each of themfor their support of the Club.

However we cannot rest onsponsorship alone. We need to fundraise, we need fresh ideas. I call on allmembers of the Club to come forwardwith ideas.

Strength as a Club on the field can bemeasured in numerous ways. One canbe the number of teams. If that is thecase, we have continued to grow instrength. 2015 saw the re-introductionof the women’s veterans. The teamhad a number of players return to thesport and it grew in strength from weekto week.

Another way club measures success isby way of premierships. I do not scribeto that belief. The Club could reachfinals and not obtain one premiership.Senior wise in 2015 we were strong, winning the 4th Grade Women’sPremiership. We also contested nailbiting grand finals in both PremierLeague Men and 2nd Grade Women.

In the juniors the Under 12 Girls,Division 2 were successful in claimingthe Premiership. But that does notmean the other parts of the Club werenot successful. In B-Pool men, for thefirst time in years we have notstruggled for numbers and formerjunior boys have returned and played.

A-Pool women have seen theintroduction of very junior girls toPremier League for future strength, whether it be Claudia Mathewson whoat 15 was playing premier league, afterstarting with the Club at Under 12’s orLouise Maddock who commenced withthe Club in 2015 at the ripe old age of15.

The idea that the success of a clubcannot be measured by premiershipsis no more poignant than in the Juniorranks. One particular club, grades thejunior teams. One team will gothroughout an entire season withoutlosing, the other team in the divisiondoes not win a game. This does notrepresent the belief of Derwent. In thesituations I have raised it results inthere being one large loser – the gameof hockey. One team may end upwalking away from the sportdisheartened by the fact that they arenot considered as important.

Within Derwent junior girls, we werefortunate to have two teams of equalability in each age group. Not all ofthem reached grand finals, howeverthey were all strong and successfuldue to fostering by Kath, Tania and thecoaches. By way of example in theUnder 12 State girls team there were 7Derwent girls, and in the Under 13State Girls, there were again 7 girls. This represented nearly half of thoseteams.

On the junior boys side our Under 12boys reached the finals, the first time insome time and the Under 14 boyswere Minor Premiers. Whilst we did notwalk away with premierships, therewere some very happy juniors withinthe Club.

Different to the past, I will be asking allclub members, in particular thecommittee members to inform theExecutive what they would like theClub to achieve in 2016. Already on thebooks we have fundraising, sponsorship, a new junior structure, the finalisation of the business planand accreditation of the juniorcoaches. We have also had clubmembers come forward and propose anew logo. That logo is on the websiteand I encourage all members to makeyour opinion known.

In conclusion I look forward to the yearto come and wish everyone awonderful Christmas.
