Stress• Stress is the body and mind’s reaction to

everyday demands or threats.• Stress is a normal part of everyday life.• The response to stress is different for every

person, and may change form situation to situation.

• How you manage stress can greatly affect your mental, emotional, and physical health.

Stressors• Definition: Any stimulus that produces a

stress response.

• Stressors can be people, objects, places, events, or situations that cause you to react.

Stressors• Biological Stressors come from biochemical imbalances,

mental or physical illnesses, disabilities, or injuries.• Environmental Stressors are like poverty, pollution,

crowding, noise, or natural disasters.• Cognitive/Thinking Stressors are like the way you perceive

a situation or what you expect from it.• Personal Behavior Stressors are like the negative reactions

in the body and mind caused by using tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs, or not exercising.

• Life Situations are like having a relative or pet die, parents who separate or divorce, or trouble in relationships with peers.

Body’s Stress Response• Nervous system and the Endocrine system, are

active during the body’s response to stressors.

• Body reactions involuntary & automatic.

• Alarm is the 1st stage in the stress response… body & mind go on high alert.

Body’s Stress Response• Adrenaline is the “emergency hormone” secreted by the

adrenal glands to prepare the body to respond to a stressor.

• Resistance is the 2nd stage in the stress response, when the body tries to repair its damage from the stressful event and return to its normal state.

• Fatigue is the 3rd stage of stress response, it results in a tired feeling that lowers one’s level of activity.

Stress in people’s Lives• Negative impact on an individual’s

health.

• Controlled by how you view the stressor.

• Cause high blood pressure, and headaches.

Managing Stress• Identify major stressors in your life.

• Learn strategies for coping with and managing stress.

Managing StressTwo basic ways of dealing with stress are:

• Eliminate the stressor or reduce your exposure to the stressor

• Change the way you perceive or react to the stressor.

Eustress Eustress is a healthy helpful stress. Eustress is the stress that prepares your body for the strength needed before an activity, that is about to occur. Eustress has an impact on your

inspiration for things. Athletes get this physical stress before a

game. When your body is in fight or flight mode

this stress prepares your body and causes your adrenaline.

Examples of Eustress:

• Engaging in a challenge

• Coming in first place in a race

• Getting a job promotion

• Watching a suspenseful movie

• Riding a roller coaster

• The holidays

Acute Stress

Acute stress is a stress caused by the change of your routine.

Acute stress is an intense stress but is a stress that passes in a short period of time.

Acute stress helps your mind get back on track and helps you know everything ok.

Distress

o Distress is a negative stress that is associated with your body being uncomfortable with a routine.

o Distress causes anxiety and misery.

o Distress can end in death

Examples of Distress:

• Death

• Troubled relationships

• Cramming for finals

• Money

• Unemployment

• Sleep problems

Chronic stress

Chronic stress is a long term stress that occurs when your body has no time to relax such as confusion and having no strict routine.

Chronic stress wears down our bodies and we are more likely to get sick physically and mentally.
