    Rail infrastructure

  • VolkerRail’s wide ranging capability covers multidisciplinary railway services to the UK’s public and private sectors, including the construction of urban mass transit systems and high speed mainline rail systems, track renewals and maintenance, signalling, electrification, high and low voltage power distribution and line-side civil engineering schemes. Projects are often delivered through collaborative working agreements, joint ventures and alliances – such as the Rail Electrification Alliance (REAL) and the East West Alliance Phase 2 (EWR2). We also have a comprehensive in-house fleet of specialist plant, for both internal and client use.

VolkerFitzpatrick’s Rail division delivers a range of rail civil engineering infrastructure projects including depot and station design

and build and enhancement work, bridge construction and renewals and platform extensions. Additional specialist and support services across our projects are provided by our VolkerGround Engineering and VolkerLaser businesses.

Major rail infrastructure schemesDuring 2018, VolkerRail and VolkerFitzpatrick have continued to deliver and complete a number of key rail infrastructure projects.

VolkerRail completed a high profile project to electrify the branch line from the West Coast main line at Preston to Blackpool, and VolkerFitzpatrick’s work continued on the key Lee Valley Rail programme, providing an additional track and station facilities to improve capacity. VolkerRail also continued work with London Underground and Thales on its Four Lines Modernisation (4LM) project to install and test signalling equipment across 40% of the underground network. VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerRail are delivering ongoing upgrade work to the Felixstowe branch line in Suffolk to improve capacity and reliability.

VolkerFitzpatrick secured a contract to extend the London Overground Gospel Oak to Barking line, from Barking to a new station at Barking Riverside, and VolkerFitzpatrick continues to work as part of the ALIGN JV on the design and build for the HS2 main civil engineering works between the Colne Valley and the Chilterns.

  • In 2018, VolkerRail delivered a project to upgrade the line between Preston and Blackpool on the West Coast main line, electrifying the network for the first time in its history - taking a step closer to providing a greener, quieter and more reliable railway for passengers in the North West of England.

As part of Network Rail’s Great North Rail Project, VolkerRail installed over 200km of new overhead wiring and equipment; renewed over 11,500 m of plain line track, and 21 switch and crossing units; and upgraded 8,000 m of railway drainage systems. The team also renewed the signalling system, constructed three new bridges, and upgraded Blackpool North and Kirkham and Wesham stations. 2,500 people worked on the project, completing 1.8 million work hours.

On the opening day, following completion of the biggest upgrade to the network since the 1800s, the first ever electric commuter train departed Blackpool North station, marking a significant transformation for the railway network in the North of England.

VolkerFitzpatrick has continued work on a major programme, on behalf of Network Rail, to deliver works to boost capacity along the Lee Valley rail corridor, and providing the additional capacity needed to support the development of 10,000 new homes planned by the Borough of Enfield.

The project involves the installation of a third track, and the construction of the new, Meridian Water station. The new station will replace the existing Angel Road station, providing an iconic and more accessible and user-friendly building. Improvements and upgrades are also being made to the existing Northumberland Park station, including a new platform to be served by the additional track.

Improvement work is also being delivered at the busy Tottenham Hale station to construct a new platform for the additional services using the new track, and to install a footbridge and measures to improve circulation around the station.

The project has taken place over a 6km working area, over more than two years – keeping stations open and working in close proximity with stakeholders – and is due to complete during the summer of 2019.

During 2018, VolkerRail was appointed to deliver the second phase of track replacement works on the Sheffield Supertram Network to extend the network’s lifespan, and continued extension works to the Manchester Metrolink Trafford Park Line.

VolkerRail has progressed its work as part of a joint venture, to construct the major new Metrolink Trafford Park tram line in Greater Manchester, and to link it to the existing Metrolink network.

The new 5.5km route under development will have six new tram stops, offering sustainable transport links to some of Greater Manchester’s busiest visitor destinations, including Trafford

Park, Europe’s largest trading estate, and terminating at the Intu Trafford Centre.

Work was carried out during the year on the tramway infrastructure, including tracks and powerlines, as well as upgrade and construction work to stations along the route. Key aspects of the project include the construction of the Pomona viaduct crossing, and a new bridge to carry the Metrolink line over the Bridgewater Canal.

Rail depotsVolkerFitzpatrick’s skills in civil engineering, building and rail come together in our projects to deliver major rail depot projects. Our teams provide our clients with specialist skills in the design and construction of new depots and in relocating or upgrading existing facilities.

In 2018, VolkerFitzpatrick’s Rail division completed a project to modernise and electrify routes through Hitachi’s rail depot at Craigentinny, Edinburgh, opening it up to be able to maintain a new generation of modern electric trains.

Network Rail are delivering electrification across a large portion of the Scottish rail network, and the depot’s facilities were not equipped to maintain the new fleet. The modification delivered by VolkerFitzpatrick enables the depot to service

the new trains, as well as continuing to use the existing fleet, and keep their new electric trains running in top condition, providing faster journeys and more seats for passengers in Scotland.

VolkerFitzpatrick also installed a modern depot protection system, to help ensure the safety of the workforce.

Rail plantVolkerRail’s Plant division is a provider of a wide range of specialist rail plant, equipment and services both internally within the VolkerWessels UK businesses and externally to Network Rail and other rail and construction companies.

VolkerRail is continuing to service the National On-Track Machine (OTM) contract for Network Rail, which involves the supply of up to 12 OTMs over a seven year period.

The contract includes the provision of up to 10 tamping machines and two ballast regulators, as well as experienced machine operators and the management and engineering services of the plant division’s team.

Keen to innovate in all areas of its operations and delivery, investment in new plant and equipment ensures the division can maintain its service and market leading position within the sector.
