It is my Sad Duty to report on the death of Marine Robert Pastor who was a Charter member of our Detachment and passed on November 23rd, and Marine Carl Crouch also a Tamarac Detachment member who attended our meetings regularly and was an Iwo Jima veteran He passed on November 27th. The Detachment provided to both Marines Honor and Respect and to their families with the Eagle, Globe & Anchor remembrance ceremony at their Funerals. I hope you have all enjoyed the Holidays. It's always a busy time of the year for everyone with seemingly not enough time in each day of this season to get everything we would like to do done. I hope everyone's mission has been accomplished with no casualty to our health or fortune. We're coming into our second half of the year and there’s much work ahead to be done. As mentioned previously our Department Scholarship allotment of raffle tickets have been received and need to be sold. There is a $5.00 book of chances for each member of the Detachment. Think about being the Marine volunteering to make the presentation of these awards to One or Some of these Units. It is an Honor and a Privilege to do so. Still in the Planning would be a Picnic or Mess Night for the Spring after the Installation of New Officers. Vet Burial Records: Veterans Day genealogy website http://www.Ancestry.com launched online a searchable collection of the burial sites of more than 500,000 members of the military. The project, a partnership with the Veterans Affairs Department and the National Archives and Records Administration, allows people to search by name — for a fee — through an online collection of military burial sites at the site. The collection includes burial information for prominent figures in history, including President Abraham Lincoln and Gen. George Armstrong Custer, who died with more than 200 of his men in the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn against a coalition of Native American tribes. “We are excited to be able to share this wealth of primary documentation,” Steve L. Muro, the VA’s undersecretary for memo-rial affairs, said in a statement. “With the help of Ancestry.com, we have opened the doors to thousands of service members’ histories through the information contained in these burial ledgers.”

The National Cemetery Administration has overseen U.S. military burial documents for 82 national cemeteries since

1973. Concerned for the fragility of the documents and wanting to expand public access to the contents, the administra-

tion scanned about 60 handwritten ledgers to produce more than 9,344 pages of high-quality digital images. However,

those images couldn’t be searched, making it difficult to find records. In 2011, the administration partnered with Ances-

try.com to index the pages so users can search them more easily. Ancestry.com spent close to 3,000 hours indexing the

records to make them searchable by name, at no expense to the government or taxpayers, the company said in a state-

ment. The project includes two new, searchable collections of U.S. burial registers, military posts and national cemeter-

ies from 1862-1960 and of U.S. headstone applications from 1926-1963.

Ancestry.com operates a website for researching family history and has more than 2 million paying subscribers. The

company develops and acquires systems that digitize handwritten historical documents, and it works with government

archives, historical societies and religious institutions around the world. The company says more than 10 billion records

have been added to its site during the past 15 years. Last month, the company announced it had agreed to be acquired by

a group led by European private equity firm Permira Funds in a cash deal valued at about $1.6 billion. [Source: Asso-

Widow(er)’s SSA Benefits: Normally, when a veteran dies the surviving spouse, starting at age 60 [50 if handicapped], is entitled to collect full monthly social security benefits based on the veterans’ SSA account. This is

true only if the widow(er) is not drawing another pension based on his/her prior employment (such as schoolteacher or

postal worker) with an employer that had its own retirement plan under which there was no deduction for social secu-

rity. However, if the widow(er) receives anything from that pension, regardless of the amount, his/her entitlement

based on the veterans SSA account will be reduced by two thirds. [Source: RAO Social Security Inquiry 22 Oct 2012

VA Pension Program: VA’s pension program provides monthly benefit payments to certain wartime Veterans with financial need, and their survivors. As Veterans and survivors consider applying for these benefits, VA would like to share important information about the pension program and organizations offering assistance with pension applica-tions. Towards this effort the VA has a released a new and updated fact sheet on VA pension programs that includes important information for veterans, survivors and their families. The fact sheet explains who is eligible to receive pen-sion benefits, and who is eligible for "aid and attendance." The document also provides a website list of accredited rep-resentatives that are available to assist claimants with preparation, presentation and prosecution of a claim for VA bene-fits. The information is accessible in the attachment to this Bulletin title, “VBA Pension Program” or via VBA’s web-site link at http://www.vba.va.gov/VBA/docs/PensionProgramInfo_final.pdf. Vet Cemetery Florida: The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced that it has purchased land for two

new national cemeteries in Florida. “We are pleased to expand burial service to families in the Sunshine State

where so many Veterans live,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “Acquiring this land is a key

step forward in bringing these national shrines to Florida.” VA plans to construct one of the cemeteries in central

eastern Florida between the cities of Daytona and Melbourne, and the other in northwestern Florida, in the Talla-

hassee area. Together, the facilities will serve an estimated population of 247,000 Veterans and family members

who are not currently served with an open national, state or tribal Veteran’s cemetery within 75 miles of their resi-

    dence.

VA completed acquisition of the central eastern Florida property on 31 JUL and paid $2 million for 318 acres of

land. The property, formerly known as Acosta Groves, is located on U. S. Route 1 in northern Brevard County in

Scottsmoor, approximately two miles from Interstate 95. VA purchased the Tallahassee property for $6.8 million

on 14 AUG. The 250-acre parcel is in Leon County with frontage along U.S. Highway 27 (Apalachee Parkway).

VA purchased the land from the St. Joe Company, one of Florida's largest real estate development firms. The

cemetery will also serve Veterans in southwestern Georgia and southeastern Alabama. VA has opened three new

national cemeteries in Florida over the past five years including Jacksonville National Cemetery (2009), Sarasota

National Cemetery (2009) and South Florida National Cemetery (2007). Prior to that:

Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell opened in 1988 and is now the second busiest VA national cemetery in

the country with 6,728 interments completed in fiscal year 2011. Of VA’s 131 cemeteries across the na-

tion, the state of Florida is home to six national cemeteries that rank among the top 32 busiest by interment

    workload.

Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, established in 1868, serves Florida’s western panhandle and south-

ern Alabama. A recent expansion of the historic cemetery ensures that it will remain open with a full range

of burial options for decades to come.

Bay Pines National Cemetery was established in 1933 and has been closed to first interment casketed burials

since 1989. The facility still offers cremation burial sites. St. Augustine National Cemetery, established in

1881, has been closed since 1997.

Veterans with a discharge issued under conditions other than dishonorable, their spouses and eligible dependent

children can be buried in a VA national cemetery. Also eligible are military personnel who die on active duty, their

spouses and eligible dependents. Other burial benefits available for all eligible Veterans, regardless of whether

they are buried in a national cemetery or a private cemetery, include a burial flag, a Presidential Memorial Certifi-

cate and a government headstone or marker. Families of eligible decedents may also order a memorial headstone or

marker when remains are not available for interment. In the midst of the largest expansion since the Civil War, VA

operates 131 national cemeteries in 39 states and Puerto Rico and 33 soldiers' lots and monument sites. More than

3.8 million Americans, including Veterans of every war and conflict, are buried in VA’s national cemeteries on

more than 20,000 acres of land. Information on VA burial benefits can be obtained from national cemetery offices,

from the Internet at http://www.cem.va.gov , or by calling VA regional offices toll-free at 800-827-1000. To make

burial arrangements at any VA national cemetery at the time of need, call the National Cemetery Scheduling Office

at 800-535-1117. [Source: VA News Release 26 Nov 2012 ++]

Stolen Valor Law 2.0 Passes in Senate Dec 04, 2012 Military.com| by Bryant Jordan

A law designed to punish those who boast battlefield medals for heroics they never performed passed the Senate on Monday, marking the second bid by Congress to outlaw lying about war records. The first so-called Stolen Valor Law was declared unconstitutional in June by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled that lying about military service was protected speech. This time around lawmakers have anchored the law on lying about awards and decorations for "tangible benefit or personal gain," not strictly lying for the sake of lying. The bill was filed by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., a Vietnam com-bat veteran, shortly after the high court knocked down the original 2006 law. "For someone who has not served to come in and get material benefit from something they did not do is just not right," Webb said in an interview with Norfolk TV station WTKR in July, when he filed the legislation that is now set to become part of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act. The House of Representatives already passed its own version of the law, so final language has to be worked out before it can be signed. Under the Senate version anyone found guilty of violating the Stolen Valor law would be fined and possibly jailed for not more than 6 months, or both. The House version would put violators in jail for up to a year. The new law states that benefits include any provided by the local, state or federal government for military service, earn a job, run for elective office, or attain an appointment to a board or position on a non-profit. Webb's bill was cosponsored by Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., and Joe Lieberman, I-Conn. The 2006 version of the Stolen Valor Act made it a crime to make any false statements claiming military awards and decorations. A California man, Xavier Alvarez, was convicted of violating the law for claiming to have earned the Medal of Honor. He was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine but appealed the case up to the Supreme Court, which struck it down. Webb and others argued the law is necessary to protect the integrity of military decorations, since those who earn them are held in high regard by the public. False claims of receiving such medals or serving in the military, the bill language states, "are especially likely to be harmful and material to employers, voters in deciding to whom paid elective positions should be entrusted, and in the award of contracts." "Military service and military awards are held in such great respect that public and private decisions are correctly influenced by claims of heroism," the bill states, arguing that making false claims about military service and hero-ism are "an especially noxious means of obtaining something of value."

Military Vets in Congress: The 113th Congress that takes office in January will have the fewest military veterans since World War II, although the number of members who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq wars is growing. Nineteen percent of

the next Congress will be veterans, with 85 in the House and 18 in the Senate, according to a tally compiled by the American Le-

gion. In the current Congress, there are 91 veterans in the House and 25 in the Senate. The decline isn't completely surprising. The

95th Congress of 1977 and 1978 -- just after the draft ended in 1973 -- had 412 veterans. The percentage of members who served in

the military has steadily fallen since. "There are two things that are leading to fewer veterans in Congress," said Jon Soltz, co-

founder of VoteVets.org. "First, the last conscription force to fight a war is at retirement age, and they are leaving Congress. Sec-

ond, the new generation of veterans makes up a smaller percentage of the overall population now, and many of them are just getting

into politics for the first time. Many of them aren’t yet ready to run for Congress, because they have no political base in their com-

    munities."

As many of the veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War retire, Afghanistan and Iraq veterans are begin-

ning to take their places. Rep. elect Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a double amputee from the Iraq War, is one of the highest-profile

new members. During her race, she faced accusations from the incumbent, Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), that she was not a "true hero"

and talked too much about her military service. Including Duckworth, there are a total of nine new House members who have

served in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Republican Martha McSally, who served in

both wars, is still waiting for the outcome of her race to be decided against Rep. Ron Barber (D-AZ). No new senators are veterans.

Seven Iraq and Afghanistan veterans were reelected. "While the total number of veterans in Congress has decreased, we will see a

record number of post-9/11 veterans in Congress this year," said Tom Tarantino, chief policy officer for Iraq and Afghanistan Vet-

erans of America. "Sixteen veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan have won their races and will be part of the House of Representatives

next year." Committee assignments in both chambers are still being figured out. More than 1 million new veterans are expected to

return home within the next five years, meaning these issues will become increasingly important for Congress.

Vet Drivers License : The military service designation is new in many states, so it may not have

been available when you last renewed your drivers li-

cense or ID card. Virtually every state will require you

pay a replacement fee if you want to get a new card with

the veterans designation before your old license has ex-

pired. Each state has different rules and costs for this, so

contact your state DMV in advance. Location and con-

tact data can be found on the internet:

If you live in a state that offers the military designa-

tion on state issued drivers licenses and ID

cards, then you will need to bring a copy of

your DD Form 214, DD Form 215, or other

discharge paperwork, along with any additional

paperwork required by your state (most states

require a copy of your birth certificate, social

security card, passport, or some other form of

identification). You should be able to find a

specific list by contacting your state department

of motor vehicles (DMV) by phone, or by visit-

    ing their website.

If you live in one of the states that doesn’t offer a

veterans designation on drivers licenses, then

you will need to contact your state representa-

tive and ask them to sponsor a bill to make this

happen. The good news is there is a growing

trend for states to offer this feature to their vet-

erans, and there is very little expense in making

this happen. So there is really no reason why

states shouldn’t offer their veterans the ability

to show a state recognized proof of service.
