BOOK IT: I just got into detectivefiction during my last semester asan English major at the

University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and I absolutely adore this genre! One of my favorites was TheBeast in the Shadows by EdogawaRampo (or pseudonym Hirai Taro)because of its riveting suspenseand plot twists. However, as youmay have noticed, I have a hardtime picking just one thing, so Ihave to throw in The Guardian byNicholas Sparks. It has romance, suspense and action — can’t gowrong. I can read it over and overand it makes me cry every time.I’ve read all his novels.

FAVORITE SINGER: My bestfriend P.O.O.R. I swear he isgoing to be famous! There’s actu-ally a pretty sexy video of me onhis youtube page. ;) Go ahead andcheck it out at www.youtube.com/user/Poorryan/videos

Hobbies: BUILD IT TO BREAK IT

WITHMICHAEL [email protected]

Dylan Levi is only 20 yet hasalready been a part of thelowrider community for half

his life. Starting off in the lowriderbike community, he rode low andslow with chrome ape-hanger han-dlebars and white-wall tires. Then atage 13, he purchased his firstlowrider, a 1984 Caprice Classic.

“I had mopeds off on the side; Ibuilt and sold those, then saved upcash and bought me a ride,” he says.Being young and new to the hy-draulics scene, he blew up the trunkby accident. “I didn’t know that youcan’t play with the things all day.”

Not one to mope about the situa-tion, Dylan immediately purchaseda Buick Regal from the classifieds. With the helpof Mamerto Magsypoc, who’s known for being amentor within the Undivided community, Dylanlearned the ins and outs of lowrider construction, and built and bagged the Regal.

“Merto has taught me everything I know,” hesays.

Continuing the buy and sell cycle, Dylan even-tually sold the Regal and purchased this 1984Cadillac Coupe de Ville from friends Rex andPiggy as a project car. The first thing you’ll noticeis the vivid “Candy Red” paint job by JasonLum of No Limit Customs. Using onlythe highest-quality paint, the caris practically devoid of swirlmarks and looks as if it’s

several feet deep. Devoid of any bondo, it took fourmonths to hammer dolly the body to perfection andsix hours of paint.

Rolling on real, original 72-spoke Daytons sizedat 14-inch inches, the car features a fully hydraulicPro Hopper 3-pump setup powered by eight bat-teries. Dylan took the time to demonstrate the sys-tem’s ability to get up on three wheels, whichresulted in some fantastic photos. The interior has

fully restored and features luxurious blackleather with custom carbon fiber inserts.

Surprisingly, this stunning car is nothing morethan a starting point for the Undivided crew.“We’re going to try and do a competition showcar,” says Dylan, who plans to install a 3-pumpsetup, hidden batteries, a fully painted frame, chromed under-carriage and lots more. Not one

to play around, he intends tostart from the ground up witha fresh new look.

One thing that impressesme about thelowrider communityis the clubs and itsmembers, who sticktogether like family. They believe inhelping each otherout while workingtogether on projectsthat exemplify theirbeliefs. Originallyformed in the1990’s, Undividedhas been reformedby Merto after being shutdown for several years. Undi-vided believes in having show-quality cars that put it up anddown at the same time.

As a member of Undivided,Dylan looks forward to mak-ing this car bigger and betterin order to represent the club’s

ideals. As far as he is con-cerned, that’s all that matters.“We don’t build them to sit inthe garage,” he says. “We buildit to break it.”

The owner and head trainerat 808 Fight Factory, andpromoter of King of the Cage

events, Kai Kamaka, wants theworldwide martial arts communityto know what Hawaii has to offer.

“I want to set a foundation forHawaii fighters to be seen nation-ally so we can compete on the high-est level,” Kamaka says. “That wasthe reason we started promotingshows again and brought King ofthe Cage to Hawaii.”

A Waipahu High School gradu-ate, Kamaka first becameinvolved in the sport back in themid-90s.

“My brother-in-law, Ray Cooper, was helping Kawika Pahaluhitrain for his first Superbrawl. Wewould watch them train in theback of his house,” he recalls.“Then it was Ray’s turn to go intoSuperbrawl. We started to helpwhere we could and then a wholebunch of us started training. Fromthere we evolved into a team,Jesus Is Lord, which was a repre-sentation of our faith.”

But it wasn’t until 1997 whenKamaka decided to step into the

ring for the first time. “It was an event called ‘Ultimate

Explosion,’” he says. “There wereno weight classes back then, andthe rounds were 10 minutes long.Head butts were allowed. It wasbasically a street fight.”

When it comes to fight disci-plines, Kamaka likes to call whathe does “freestyle” — a mixture ofvarious styles all rolled into one.

“I started doing stand-up withRichard Pelen, Danny Kaheakuand Adrian Silva at Waianae

Boxing Club. I learned wrestlingfrom Tatsuhiko Hikiji,” heexplains. “For my ground game,my brother-in-law, Ron Jhun, andI trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsuwith John Lewis at Nova Uniao.Everything after that was kind oflearned on our own through trialand error.”

Kamaka now has his eyes firm-ly set on the future.

“I want to train Hawaii boys sowe can send them out there tocompete,” he says.

The UFC will hold its first event inthe People’s Republic of China whenit visits Macau, a special administra-tive region of China, Nov. 10 at theVenetian Macao-Resort-Hotel’sCotaiArena. The card, which is yet tohave any fights announced, will beseen on Fuel TV. “Breaking into a mar-ket with a population of over 1.3 bil-lion is both a testament to the growthof our sport and a long-term challenge we are excited to under-take,” UFC chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said. “This is justthe first of many world-class fights we plan to hold over thecoming years in China, one of the birthplaces of martial arts.”The global expansion may not be done. Following UFC 148 inLas Vegas earlier this month, UFC president Dana White strong-ly hinted of an upcoming event in Russia … Strikeforce women'sbantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will make her first titledefense against former champion Sarah Kaufman on Aug. 18 inSan Diego. The bout will headline Strikeforce's card at the ValleyView Casino Center and air on Showtime. — Bob Emanuel Jr.

The elbow strike is a devas-tating tool which is nowemployed often in MMA. It canbe used from the kickboxingrange, but the timing and foot-work needed make it difficult. Inthe clinch, the elbow can bethrown with greater accuracy.

When throwing the elbow, don’t just slash it across thetarget. Like a punch, lean for-ward and drive the elbowthrough the objective. Aim touse just the tip of your elbow, asthat is the hardest portion.Think of it as a ball-peen ham-mer. To hit with the tip, rotateyour thumb down so that yourelbow extends out a bit farther.Practice perfect form and youwill create maximum impactwith this powerful weapon.

M-1 Martial Arts & Fitnessinstructors Ivan Flores andArthur Wong have always

appreciated the unique form of MuayThai fighting because of its use ofelbows (sok) and knees (kao), as well asits power and effectiveness when in theclinch.

It’s the reason why these teachersspend many of their days and nightsworking to expose the beauty of thefighting art to Hawaii residents.

“We’re trying to promote Muay Thaiin its purest form,” says Flores, who has15 years of Muay Thai training underhis belt. “We want to be a break fromthe norm.”

“Muay Thai has less rules than otherarts so it’s a more complete strikingart,” adds Wong of Thailand’s nationalsport, which dates back to ancient bat-tlefields and the hand-to-hand tactics ofthe Thai (or Siamese) army. “It’s the artof choice for all UFC fighters.”

Often referred to as “The Art of EightLimbs,” Muay Thai practitioners strike

in eight ways — with both fists, feet, knees and elbows. The fighting formwas first established in the 16th centu-ry under King Naresuan. But it wasn’tuntil the rule of King Phra Chao Sua,aka “The Tiger King,” that Muay Thaibegan to really flourish.

Today, the sport is enjoyed by many, including such famous fight disciples asTony Jaa and Gina Carano.

Of course, Wong hopes the Muay Thaiscene can flourish in Hawaii too. Henotes that Muay Thai is one of the hard-est striking martial arts in the world.

M-1, which has been around for morethan two years, caters to people of alllevels and experience, including work-ing professionals, women and even afew high school students.

Flores, who trained in Thailand atKaewsamrit Gym, says students areencouraged to exhibit humility whiletraining in a safe and fun environment.

“Everyone smiles (at M-1). No one istrying to be the tough guy,” he says.

M-1 also offers Muay Thai combat-ants a location to compete and perfecttheir skills.

“No one wants to compete with MuayThai rules so it’s hard to find fights (out-side of M-1 Martial Arts & Fitness),”says Wong, who trained in Thailand for10 years under Jongnansan Fairfex,Enn Fairfex and Ganyao (the leadtrainer at Fairfex gym).

“We love the Thai culture and art,”Flores adds. “It’s been a labor of love.”

M-1 is located at 2203 S. BeretaniaSt., #4 in Moiliili. For more informa-tion,visit www.M-1martialfitness.com,or call Flores at 497-0875 or Wong at729-7298.

Page 16: Street Pulse Pai Award

In the late ’90s, gamersnormally far too uncoor-dinated or scared to try

skating themselves were en-raptured by “Tony Hawk’sPro Skater.” Players couldtake control of Tony Hawkand several other popularskaters, then take themthrough a handful of maps.

If you’re over the age of 20and reading this, you’reprobably in a punk rock nos-talgia dream, imaginingpulling off death-defyingstunts in the half-pipe. I com-pletely understand becauseit was an amazing game, 14years ago. However, there isa reason skating games havechanged since then.

In “Tony Hawk Pro SkaterHD,” (for PlayStation 3 andXbox 360) the graphics andcontrols have been modern-ized, but that seems to be it.The gameplay, while solid, isstill just collecting five thingsin two minutes, beating a setscore, and hitting five things. For example in the ware-house level you collect ship-ping manifests; in the school,it’s hall passes; and in theairplane hangar, it’s pilot’sbadges. Each level is just thesame set of challenges with anew thing to get in a new

level, a couple of which arevery similar but with differ-ent color palettes. Also, forsome reason there are float-ing iTunes gift cards in thegame that you can collect;they do nothing and arenever explained.

When you complete an ob-jective you get cash, which isonly usable for two things:buying a new board, whichyou can’t even see most of thetime, or changing the statson the various skaters, whichcompletely negates the pointof them having differentstats to begin with.

Even the soundtrack isrepetitive. After about anhour of gameplay, I started tonotice there are just three orfour songs that loop over andover. The reason people stillremember the lyrics to someof those songs is becausethere were only a few tobegin with, not that theywere good.

Ultimately, it comes down

to how dedicated you were tothe original game. If you stilllike to play those old ProSkater games, this is a mustbuy because it’s so close tothe original. However, forother players that’s alsowhere it fails. The game fails

to explain anything and is sorepetitive. Still, it is hard forme to give it a bad score be-cause technically it is a verysolid game, the controls areresponsive and the gamelooks good. It’s just a shame

that was wasted on suchpoor mechanics and design.

If the game had more lev-els, a wider variety of objec-tives, an actual onlinecomponent and a character

customization system Iwould easily recommend it.But as is, it feels like baby’sfirst skating game.

I give it a 90/100 for fans ofthe original, but a 75/100 foreveryone else.
