TOOLS TO EMBRACE A MORE FLUID WORKFORCE

Previously, IRI completed a study to evaluate how the

management of science and technology would change by the year 2038. One of the scenarios identified was “The Hollywood model” in which scientists, engineers, and innovators no longer work for a single firm but rather contract out their services to individual projects and then move on to other projects and companies. This team’s premise is that there will be a hybrid model where most companies will have to manage both the traditional workforce along with

a more fluid one. Hear about some of the tools the team has identified to help manage this hybrid model.

RECRUITING AND RETAINING EARLY CAREER TECHNICAL TALENT

In today’s market, R&D organizations must compete to

attract and retain the top early career technical talent. Using the results of several case studies and a survey completed by 350+ early career professionals, this research team reports on key elements of an early career recruitment and development experience that maximize

the mutual benefit for the employee and employer and enhances retention of top talent.

CAREER PATHS FOR INNOVATION

‘R&D’ and ‘innovation’ are often used interchangeably, but

function differently across different organizations and often reside in different places within an organization. This project team has worked to better understand where innovation sits in an organization and how individuals can progress to the top of this function. To do this, the team has conducted a survey of 45

R&D organizations on their innovation and R&D functions, interviews with thought leaders working with R&D and innovation professionals, and case studies of the path that individuals have taken to get to the top of innovation in their organization. The team will share key recommendations for individuals wishing to progress within innovation and R&D.

OPENING KEYNOTE MAURICE HOLLAND AWARD

PROGRAM PREVIEWStrategic Challenges in R&D Talent Management project teams have tackled key issues facing R&D leaders as they work to optimize their most important asset: people.

Join colleagues to honor the 2017 Maurice Holland Award recipients Emily Barbara Kennedy, University of Akron, and Thomas Andrew Marting, GOJO Industries. Their paper, “Biomimicry: Streamlining the Front End of Innovation for Environmentally Sustainable Products,” (RTM, July-August 2016) was named “best paper” of 2016. This case study suggests that biomimicry may be a highly promising approach for driving innovation, and particularly

environmentally sustainable innovation.Holland Award selection is based upon rigorous criteria of

pertinence to the field of research management; significant contribution to the field of research management, originality of new management concepts, and excellence and clarity of presentation.

RESEARCH GROUPSIRI’s Research groups operate in a highly collaborative environment of innovation leaders and practitioners from member organizations paired with subject matter experts to carry out deep explorations in areas of special concern to members. Together, volunteers share their experiences and research case studies to establish best practices regarding common issues of interest or concern. The research performed is leading-edge because it provides a broader and more diverse perspective for boosting the effectiveness of technological innovation by leveraging experts across all industries.Four project teams will report their findings.

Product Design for Mass CustomizationThis research effort has focused on the product design implications of mass customization on manufacturers/producers. Customer demand for individually configured and customized products is on the rise across all industries. Companies are faced with the challenge of maintaining cost and quality while producing customized products with heightened response to individual customer needs. This project has used a breadth of approaches and maturity of IRI members (and beyond) and will report on best practices that achieve design for customization while identifying common pitfalls.

Lean Startup in Large OrganizationsLean Start-Up is a new process for product development that replaces the stage gate process for developing products when there is high uncertainty in the market and/or technology – characteristics which typically occur in transformational and disruptive innovations. The lean start-up methodology had its beginnings in small companies (Eric Reis, The Lean Start-Up, Crown Publishing, 2011; Steve Blank, What the Lean Start-Up Changes Everything, HBR, May 2013). Large companies such as GE, Goodyear and Intuit have begun to adopt the process. As large companies are fundamentally different than start-ups, the methodology, practices, pitfalls, and lessons from small start-ups will have limited applicability to large companies. Accordingly, the purpose of this project has been to learn how lean start-up is actually used in large companies, which industries it might easily be applied to, and which industries need to modify and adopt the process. The team will report on the implementation methodology, best practices and lessons learned.

Adding Sustainability to the NPD ToolboxOver the past five years, two Research groups have examined how sustainability can be factored into R&D. Focusing on the planet (environment) portion of the triple P (people, planet and profits, P3), the first ROR proposed a sustainability maturity model that allowed companies to visualize where they were in the sustainability hierarchy. A second group, Sustainability Driven Innovation (SDI), examined sustainability driven innovation as a

methodology for companies to use sustainability as a way to drive innovation. At the conclusion of the SDI project, clinics were run to help and advise companies with an interest in sustainability, to move forward. These clinics revealed it was difficult for companies even with the flow chart, to move forward without more prescriptive advice. In order to understand and overcome the difficulty that many companies had in visualizing how they would use SDI, it has been the aim of this third project to help overcome the gap between a high level view on the importance of sustainability to a “how to do it” with examples of businesses originally in different phases of the maturity model.

Developing and Monetizing a Long Term Vision for R&DThe goal of this project has been to discover best practices for establishing a long-term vision for R&D that is tied to business strategies and how to use this vision to influence the strategy and direction of the firm. The team’s hypothesis was that R&D leaders must often make investments that extend beyond the normal business planning cycle, however, insights to guide these longer term R&D investments are often challenging for organizations. While organizations may have many of the pieces needed to form a long-term vision – such as market trends, voice of the customer, and customer and market insights – they lack critical pieces that will inform and justify longer term investments. The team will report on how companies are filling those gaps in long-term insights and how they are bringing the pieces together to form a compelling vision and translating this vision into actionable steps to guide long term R&D strategy.

ADDITIONAL WORKING GROUP SESSIONSWarning! You are entering an interactive zone. Prepare to work with fellow members on key tasks that will further the research of current ROR projects.
