Lots of bugs! So, when “Steve” moved right outside the windowsill I decided to allow him to stay. Steve was a beautiful garden spider that had spun a web between our one tree and our dining room windowsill right under the outdoor floodlights. It was a perfect spot to lure breakfast, lunch, and dinner for Steve. By the fall of the year, “Steve” had grown into quite a specimen…legs and all…Steve was as big as my hand! And our bug problem, well, it was under control. This spider became a cul-de-sac star…our neighbors brought friends by just to look at Steve…Zachary took pictures of Steve to school for show and tell…and later that fall, when Steve’s life was over, we buried him in a plastic baggie under his windowsill. I don’t mind spiders. They aren’t my favorite among God’s creation but they can be quite beautiful and the webs they spin are complete works of art. So, I don’t really mess with them. Currently, I have four huge webs with equally large arachnids outside the back door. No Halloween decorating needed, the spiders have taken care of it! But, was thinking…there are parallels between allowing the spiders free run around the house and sin. The spiders spin their webs. I sweep them down and within a day, they’re back. I justify it by not allowing in deadly spiders. What harm can come of that? The Bible instructs us to flee from sin, yet we allow it to creep into our lives and then routinely sweep out the debris without fully killing the sin. We comfort ourselves with the knowledge that we don’t commit deadly sins like murder or stealing, but the end result is the same. When we least expect it, the regular garden-variety sin has bitten us and left a mark on our lives. What sin are you struggling to rid your life of today? Perhaps it’s a small sin you routinely wrestle with and it’s dragging you down because you won’t get rid of it once and for all. Ask God to help you identify the areas of your life that need cleaning up. Under His Grace, Georgianne No one who is tested should say, “God is tempting me!” This is because God is not tempted by any form of evil, nor does he tempt anyone. Everyone is tempted by their own cravings; they are lured away and enticed by them. Once those cravings conceive, they give birth to sin; and when sin grows up, it gives birth to death.” ~James 1:13-15

Deep Creek Friends Meeting October, 2012

Steve: The Itsy Bitsy Spider In the summer of 1996, our family moved into our first house complete with a fenced yard, a tree, grass, and bugs.

Pastor Appreciation Prayer From Desperate Preacher.com

by Rev. Frank Schaefer Almighty and ever-gracious God,

We give you thanks for Pastor Georgianne. You have appointed her to be our Shepherd;

to minister to our spiritual needs to reach the lost souls in our community

to prayerfully guide and tend to our church.

We realize that the tasks of a pastor are demanding.

Her job is never done. She listens, cares, and prays for us,

encourages and teaches us and reaches out to those in need of help and salvation.

We give you thanks, O Lord, for our pastor.

On this day we pray that you would strengthen and empower her.

We pray that you would bless her and her family, and that you would keep them out of

harm's way.

May you keep her from temptations and negativity? May the joy of the Lord always

remain in her heart.

Amen.

Food for the Hungry

Thank you for the items you donated for Yadkin Christian Ministries in September. They were very much appreciated.

You might want to consider bringing canned fruits for the month of October. Fruits are nutritious and are enjoyed by both the young and the elderly, but right now there is very little fruit in stock.

Money is always an option and can be used to purchase items from the Second Harvest Food

Bank at a lower cost than purchasing from a grocery store.

Do not forget Walk for Hunger on October 7 (3:00 PM at Yadkinville Community Park) and Empty Bowls on October 30 (11:00 to 2:00 PM at Yadkinville Methodist Church) – the proceeds from both go to Yadkin Christian Ministries. The deadline for purchasing tickes for the Empty Bowls lunch is October 12. You may Contact Phyllis Barnes, Larry Klett or Janet Robbins for tickets.

IMPACT YADKIN JUNE 8-15, 2013

The first worship service and meeting of individual groups for Impact Yadkin was held on Sunday, September 30, at Union Grove Baptist Church. There were many area churches represented, including Deep Creek with 11 members

present to learn more about our role in this event. There were several Impact speakers and a band from Maryland, who performed during the service. I, personally, am very excited about this upcoming mission event in Yadkin County.

Each year, the number of people with job loss and struggling with finances seems to be growing. When making a choice between making home repairs or feeding families and buying needed medications, a lot of folks cannot afford to do repairs.

As I spent some time thinking and praying about this event, I realized that it is not just uneducated people, sick people or elderly; there are many folks like you and I who are jobless and suffering from tough finances. If we look around us, either a neighbor, friend or family member has had or is having these same issues.

More importantly with this event, it is not just about making repairs and building things from wood or shingles. It is about building a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ, with community and building up the Kingdom of God.

Each month we are reminded of Deep Creek's Mission Statement: “A COMMUNITY OF FRIENDS, growing in God's Word, reaching all generations, and serving other's in Christ’s love." . . .So, this is what Impact Yadkin is all about!!

I challenge you to take a few minutes and pray about where God can use your gifts in this mission event in Yadkin County. And, please PRAY daily for this event to be a life changing experience.

In Christ Service, Angie Brendle

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Men and Women

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) (in America National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM)) is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

Reminder: Both men and women - Do be breast aware for earlier detection.

We at Deep Creek are well aware that the disease attacks both men and women.

For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. However, both men and women with the same stage of breast cancer have a fairly similar outlook for survival. Even though breast cancers in men tend to be slightly smaller than in women when they are first found, they have more often already spread to nearby tissues or lymph nodes. The extent of spread is one of the most important factors in the prognosis (outlook) of a breast cancer. Both men and women should know your body (arm pits to collar bone) and seek help for anything unusual, swelling, pain, a lump, redness, any oozing of fluid. Women should also have regular testing. Women should have regular mammograms starting at age 40 or younger if you have a family history of breast cancer. Keep your weight down – putting on pounds as you get older makes you more susceptible to the disease. Also be aware, use of alcohol significantly ups risks.

"You're Never Too Old To Learn" Sunday, September 23rd, the FOJ had a lesson on “God is the ONLY one who keeps us from Falling". We played a game of hopscotch - trying not to fall. The kids all cheered as our special guest, Franklin Shore, played hopscotch for the very first time ever! He made it through without falling and we all realized that you're never too old to learn! Franklin soon realized that if you show up during our meetings you get asked to participate. Thanks to him for being willing to be a participant in our learning and fun. Angie

Allie Jones served as one of the pages during the North Carolina Yearly Meeting Sessions at Black Mountain. She did a great job greeting the people, passing out materials and assisting the clerk.

October 8 - Columbus Day, A federal holiday honoring Christopher Columbus Columbus's voyages led to the first lasting European contact with America, inaugurating a period of European exploration and colonization of foreign lands that lasted for several centuries. They had, therefore, an enormous impact in the historical development of the modern Western world. Columbus himself saw his accomplishments primarily in the light of the spreading of the Christian religion.

September rushed in and with it the splendor of Fall! The DOGS (Disciples of God's Spirit) and Youth continued the business as fall rushed in bringing cooler weather, football season, festivals and the beauty that accompanies this season.

The month began with the Youth attending the Young Friends Annual Sessions Yearly Meeting at Black Mountain. It was wonderful to see youth from many Quaker churches come together and worship God as a corporate body. Deep Creek was also represented in the Young Adult and Adult sessions. The DOGS and Youth both attended their regular monthly meetings in the month of September. The DOGS finished their walk through the Old Testament by observing one of the minor prophets, Jonah. We looked at how Jonah tried to hide from God and the later events that occurred as a result. He repented and allowed God to use him but also became angry with God for his decision to spare Ninevah. A comparison was made

between ourselves and Jonah. Sometimes, when God asks us to do something uncomfortable, we try and hide from him. As in Jonah's case, this never works out well. When we finally repent and allow God to use us, our lives look more like how God wants them to be. Following God's calling is not always easy and not always a pleasant task. Sometimes we are confused as to how God works. Jonah was confused and became angry with God. We, like Jonah, get angry with God when we cannot understand our world and his plans. In the end God will make all things clear as he did to Jonah. The Youth also began working on the Children and Youth Sunday Service that they will hold during Sunday School and Worship on October 28th. They were all very willing to participate and volunteered, stepping up to take on leadership roles. We have an exciting theme and hope that everyone will attend worship that day!

The Young Adults also came together on a Monday night in September and traveled to Boone to fellowship with some of our friends, Craig and Jake Shore, at Appalachian State University. We spent the evening together enjoying dinner and many laughs.

Looking Ahead...We have many exciting things in our future at Deep Creek. I hope everyone can participate in these events!

All of the kids will participate in the Susan Steelman Walk for Hunger on October 7th. – Meet for lunch

The DOGS will have a lock-in 10/12 - 10/13 at Clark and Brenda Shore's Cabin!

We will also have our regular Sunday afternoon meetings on October 14th.

October 28th will be our annual Trunk ‘N Treat! ALSO, Last day to collect Yadkin Christian Ministries food for Farm Bureau contest. Blessings,

Jared

The Coal Basket The story is told of an old man who lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning, Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading from his old worn-out Bible. His grandson who wanted to be just like him tried to imitate him in any way he could. One day the grandson asked, 'Papa, I try to read the Bible just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Bible do?'

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and said, 'Take this old wicker coal basket down to the river and bring back a basket of water.'

The boy did as he was told, even though all the water leaked out before he could get back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, 'You will have to move a little faster next time,' and sent him back to the

river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the old wicker basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was 'impossible to carry water in a basket,' and he went to get a bucket instead. The old man said, 'I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You can do this. You're just not trying hard enough,' and he went out the door to watch the boy try again. At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got far at all. The boy scooped the water and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, 'See Papa, it's useless!' 'So you think it is useless?' The old man said, 'Look at the basket.' The boy looked at the basket, and for the first time he realized that the basket looked different. Instead of a dirty old wicker coal basket, it was clean. 'Son, that's what happens when you read the Bible. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, it will change you from the inside out.'
