Linear sensors are incorporated in hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders, solely for servoing applications.Whether the installation be hydraulic or pneumatic, where the sensor runs the risk of physical damage (shock, hostile environment …), and where the design of the machine prohibits the use of a linear sensor, the integrated linear sensor is the answer.

There are three major advantages to installing the sensors internally in this way :

The sensors allow you to save space in your application, keeping pace with the continual drive for and research into miniaturisation.

The sensors are protected from external stresses (pesticide, shock, acid products…).

The open design of this range of linear sensors ensures improved reliability, a long service life and easy maintenance at the lowest cost.

Using the conductive-plastic potentiometer technology, these sensors offer so-called infi nite resolution. They are designed to operate at temperatures ranging from -40 °C to +125 °C and for cylinders moving at speeds of up to 5 m/s for a pneumatic cylinder.

Integrated sensors usually have linearity adaptations and customised electrical and mechanical travel.

Refer to pages 42 to 43 for the detailed characteristics for this product family and contact our Technical Department for any special requests.

How to select your sensorSingle-turn angular sensors, also termed "potentiometric" sensors are used to make occasional adjustments or changes to a setpoint. In this case, the device will be called upon relatively infrequently in relation to servoing or drive applications. Our single-turn potentiometers have a service life of 1 to 2 million shaft rotations depending on the model.

StepsSelect the desired linearity and check your dimensional limits. The linearity of the potentiometer is proportional to its size. The bigger the potentiometer’s diameter, the better its linearity. Our range of potentiometers includes diameters from 16 to 76 mm with linearity from 2 % to 0.15 % respectively.

Then determine the total resistance of the potentiometer, termed “nominal resistance” [ R ]. The most common nominal resistance values are : 1 K , 5 K or 10 K .It is essential that the load’s input impedance be at least 10 times the nominal resistance of the potentiometer.

Determine the power of the potentiometer depending on the voltage [ U ] applied to the potentiometer or on the load current [ I ] :P = U² / R ou P = R . I²Then select the model whose power is at least equal to the value determined above.

Refer to the product technical characteristics on pages 18 to 21.

Example of selecting a single-turn potentiometer Your application requires a minimum linearity of 0.5 % with an input impedance of 50 K .

ResultThe minimum nominal resistance of your potentiometer must be: R = 50 K ÷ 10 i.e. 5 K .

The potentiometer is powered by a 24 V voltage, so P = 0.11 W

Use these fi gures to determine from the two tables below which potentiometer model is best adapted to your needs. In this example, the best model is the 891021, available in the 5 K version and with a maximum power rating of 0.5 W.

Analog Position Sensors

How to select your sensor Just like the single-turn models, these potentiometers are used to make adjustments or change a setpoint. Multiturn potentiometers have higher maximum acceptable power ratings than the single-turn models. For the same diameter, they offer higher accuracy than the single-turn models. Mechanically, the multiturn potentiometers have minimum and maximum stops. These multiturn potentiometers have service lives of 2 million shaft rotations.

StepsSelect the desired linearity and check your dimensional limits. The linearity of the potentiometer is proportional to its size. The bigger the potentiometer’s diameter, the better its linearity. Two diameters are available for the multiturn devices : 22 and 44 mm.

Then determine the total resistance of the potentiometer, termed “nominal resistance” [ R ]. The most common nominal resistance values are : 1 K , 5 K or 10 K .It is essential that the load’s input impedance be at least 10 times the nominal resistance of the potentiometer.

Determine the power of the potentiometer depending on the voltage [ U ] applied to the potentiometer or on the load current [ I ] :P = U² / R or P = R . I²Then select the model whose power is at least equal to the value determined above.

Refer to the product technical characteristics on pages 22 à 23.

Example of selecting a multiturn potentiometer Your application requires a minimum linearity of 0.50 % with an input impedance of 10 K .

ResultThe minimum nominal resistance of your potentiometer must be : R = 10 K ÷ 10 i.e. 1 K .

Use these fi gures to determine from the two tables below which potentiometer model is best adapted to your needs. The Table on the right shows the standard models with a nominal resistanceof 1 K or more. In this example, the potentiometer is powered by a 30 V voltage, so P = 0.9 W.From the Table on the left, it can be seen that 4 models correspond to the selection criteria.

Angular and Rotary, Linear, Adapted Sensors

This "non contacting" technology uses the following phenomenon :when a magnetic fi eld is applied perpendicularly to a conductive plate through which a current is passed, a voltage signal called “Hall Voltage" is detected. This principle is applied to the sensor by installing two magnets on the moving part, which then identifi es its angular position.

Hall Effect

Conductive plastic technology is used in both angular and linear sensors. It provides a very signifi cant increase in the service life of the sensors (up to 50 million shaft revolutions), and a so-called infi nite resolution.

Conductive Plastic

Angular sensor: up to 350° Linear sensor: up to 1000 mm Linearity: from 0.15 % à 2 % Service life: up to 50 million shaft revolutions

Power rating: up to 3 W

Wire-wound angular sensors consist of a wound resistive wire. This technology offers excellent linearity together with a high power rating. It also offers very low nominal resistance, starting at 20 .

Wire-wound

Angular sensor: up to 358° Rotary sensor: up to 10 turns Linearity: from 0.1 % to 0.5 % Service life: 2 million shaft revolutions Power rating: up to 7 W

Hybrid angular sensors are a combination of the wire-wound and the plastic technologies.A resistive plastic fi lm applied on the winding provides the combined advantages of both these technologies.

Angular sensor: up to 358° Rotary sensor: up to 10 turns Linearity: from 0.1 % to 0.5 % Service life: from 2 to 10 million shaft revolutions

Power rating: up to 7 W

Angular sensor: up to 360°

Linearity: from 2 % to 0.3 %

Service life: up to 100 million shaft revolutions

IP66/67

Number of outputs: 1 to 2The standard sensor has a dual output signal; this redundancy in the information improves safety

Numerous variants in the output signals can be factory-programmed on request

NCAPS

This technology uses the following phenomenon:the coupler is associated with the moving part of the sensor; as it moves, it modifi es the inductive fi elds between the emitter and the receiver. These changes are then translated into an electrical signal.

360° angular sensor with no "dead-band"

1 % linearity

Many types of output signals:PWM, Analog

Number of outputs : 1 to 2
