Welcome to the latest Step Out guide, packed full of good ideas to get you and your family out exploring the city’s parks and open spaces. As in previous issues, there is something for everyone, with good access and the added bonus that many of our facilities and activities are free for you to enjoy.

We have a dedicated team of staff who work extremely hard to ensure your day out is an enjoyable one, whether you choose one of our many large parks - Coombe Country Park, War Memorial Park, Allesley, Longford, Holbrooks, Caludon Castle, or the other smaller parks local to where you live. You can also visit Broadgate in the city centre, which provides a dynamic and exciting outdoor event venue.

Visitor CentreThe popular Visitor Centre proudly displays the Missing Faces exhibition, dedicated to those lost during the First World War. All personnel lost during this war that have a memorial tree and plaque within the park are featured on this wall. Come along, take a look and use the information kiosk to find the location of each plaque within the park. For a small charge you can print off a certificate of individual soldiers.

The new centre also includes the golf reception, the Education Room (available to hire for community groups and clubs), league football changing rooms and a licensed café area.

Performance Space Outside the Visitor Centre there is a new performance space for bands, theatre groups and for café customers to spill out into the sunshine. If you wish to showcase your talent please contact Ann, the Park Manager, to discuss how we can work with you to do this. Some of the ‘Bands in the Parks’ will also be held in this area during the summer.

Education RoomThe Education Room holds between 30 and 50 people depending on the type of activity being held. The room can be split into two for smaller groups - up to a maximum of 25 people in each half depending on the activity. The room is available for hire for community groups, workshops, exercise classes etc. Charges differ depending on the amount of space that you require, please call the Visitor Centre on 024 7678 6280 to discuss your needs and to book. Please let us know if you are a charity or a local group as we will be able to offer you a discounted rate.

Friends of the War Memorial ParkThe Friends of the War Memorial Park are an active group who aim to protect the park for future generations to enjoy. Continuing with their good work including the refurbishment of the rose garden, they are also looking at the history of the park, ecological aspects of the park, the landscaping and the trees and the ways in which the facilities can be improved. The Friends can be found at the new Visitor Centre where you can learn more about their work, purchase some park souvenirs, and also sponsor a rose in memory of a loved one.

New members are always welcome and there are some exciting projects planned including raising funds for an outside gym area. If you want to get involved please contact Syd Feegrade at 19 Innis Road, Coventry, CV5 6AX, 024 7667 2551.
