The lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer are almost over! I know each of us beginsthe summer with lots of plans. I hope you have taken some renewal time for yourself this sum-mer. If you have not, now is the time to think about your personal renewal.
Your STAT Board was renewed in Miami at NSTAs National Congress on Science Educa-tion (NCSE). We spent time in workshops to learn how to beer facilitate and focus our state or-ganization. We also spent time working in forums on science resolutions that will be the focus ofNSTA as they work to improve science education nationally. Likewise each local chapter, Texas
included, will be expected to work towardthose same issues. Those issues included:
ISSUES FORUM 1: Resources for retain-ing teachersISSUES FORUM 2: Supporting science
leadersISSUES FORUM 3: Meeting the needs ofdiverse learnersISSUES FORUM 4: Components of asupport system for science teachersISSUES FORUM 5: Optimizing sciencein the elementary gradesISSUES FORUM 6: K 8 integration ofscience and mathematics
Continuing my professional renewal,I have spent the last few days involved inthe very rst trainer workshop at the SallyRide Institute in San Diego. An elementaryscience team from our districts elementaryscience teachers participated with me. Sal-ly Ride was wonderful! She brings a won-derfully refreshing view of diversity aboutscientists to the table. What a wonderfully
renewing experience! The activities werewonderful, but I think the most importantpoint that stood out for me, was the renewal

Message from the President(contd. from page 8)
of our elementary science team and focusing onWomen in Science and other diverse groups. Ithas been a while since I was involved in a scienceteam learning experience. I had forgoen how ex-hilarating team interaction can be!
My nal renewal, on a personal note, beganwith a trip to Wyoming. Growing up on the GulfCoast left me in the dark about a lot of the EarthScience concepts I was taught in college. Dont getme wrong, the Gulf Coast has plenty of Earth Sci-ence phenomenons to observe, it just wasnt whatI was being taught in Geology classes. I was a Bi-ology major and loved the living sciences. I alsoacquired an appreciation for the Chemistry andPhysics that was associated with living organisms. However, Earth Science was just something I tol-erated for 30+ hours as I worked toward a com-posite science degree in college. I nally see what
the fuss is all about! As we ew into Jackson Hole, the snow capped Grand Tetons were so beauti-ful, it was like looking at a postcard. Everythingwe did was against that backdrop unbelievably beautiful! A trip through Yellowstone NationalPark furthered my astonishment. The wildlife, rivers, waterfalls, mountains, wildowers, and es-pecially the geysers, really intrigued me. Can youimagine being one of the rst Indian inhabitantsof that land and coming upon those geysers? By
the way, did you know that the dierent hues ofcolor in those geyser pools are due to the dierentspecies of bacteria and algae that can survive athot temperatures? I have been reading and study-ing voraciously since I returned! I think this is themost important renewal one can have. Each ofus probably had a passion for science and couldshare that passion with others through teaching. If you have not renewed your science passion you need to! It is truly exhilarating and will allowyou to beer inspire your students because of thatpassion.
As you look for ways to renew your sci-ence passion, dont forget about the wonderful
Regional Mini-CASTs we have across Texas. Wehave great Regional Directors who spend an enor-mous amount of time and energy to make thoseconferences both benecial and renewing. I haveaended many and they are excellent!
Dont forget to Catch a wave to CAST2009 in Galveston, November 5th - 7th, anothergreat way to renew your passion for science. The2009 team has worked hard to make this the mostoutstanding CAST yet. I look forward to seeing, meeting, and talking to you there!
Whatever you do until school starts, and Iknow you will be incredibly busy, be sure to taketime to renew yourself and your science passion.
Welcome back to another great school year!See you at CAST!

Texas Earth Science Teachers AssociationTESTA
by Diann Valentine
WOW - what a fantastic eld trip several TESTAmembers took June 13-22 to Iceland. CharlesSwift worked with Holbrook Educational Travel
to create a once in a lifetime memorable experi-ence. Our tour guide, Ari Trausti, was the ulti-mate escort.
With over 20 published books, Ari is aleading expert in the elds of geology, volca-nology, astronomy, environmental science andmountaineering. His guidebook, Focus on Ice-land, included all of the highlights on our trip, and of course, he knew the information by heart! After a long trip from Houston, the rst day re-vived our tired bodies with an uplifting experi-ence of soaking in the geothermal pool, the BlueLagoon. The blues of the water were breathtak-ing and the beauty of Iceland was evident.
As our travels progressed we were surethat it could not get any beer than the last stopbut we were always wrong. Each waterfall wasmore beautiful than the last. Every volcano andmountain peak seemed more alluring. From
hiking on glaciers to oating with icebergs whilewe tasted 800-year-old ice, weenjoyed exploring many facetsof this wonderful island. Dur-ing one days drive we wereon both the North Americantectonic plate as well as theEurasian plate as we crossedover the Mid Atlantic Ridge.Aris knowledge lled our
minds with the geology of Ice-land as we traveled more than2000 Km (1200 miles) duringour adventures.
Please visit our booths, 1700 & 1702, atCAST to see our PowerPoint presentation of ourtravels. We have samples of Icelandic rock for
our rock rae as well as our luncheon. Visit theTESTA link to read more details and see daz-zling photos!
Since more Earth Science is targeted onthe TEKS, please join us in the TESTA strand. We will present 3 eld trips, 4 short courses, 4workshops, our share-a-thon, and our famousrock rae. Our luncheon features Dr. AlisonHenning, Rice University, presenting Evolu-tion in Science and Society.
Finally, TESTA will be celebrating our25th anniversary. Plan on helping us celebratethe wonders of the Earth. Please bring a rock ormineral sample for our rock rae. If you havean exciting Earth Science activity please share itwith teachers in our share-a-ton. We also willhave an ad in the CAST program to help youplan for a great CAST. Contact me for more in-formation about any of our activities. See you
there!

Green ScienceWere Going Green! How many times have you heard that phrase lately? As clich as it seems, itspart of what science tells us we need to do--conserve our resources!
So, CAST 2009 has decided to make Conservation an important part of our science conference. Were takingsteps to be more thoughtful in our choices and procedures and wed like you to help.
Here are the some of the ways were trying to be more resourceful (or should that be resource-less?):
Placing recycling receptacles throughout conference areas Slimming down the conference program Printing on recycled paper Sharing more information electronically Reusing leftover conference bags from last year Purchasing nametag wallets made from recycled materials Keeping reusable items generic enough to carry over to next years conference Making handouts and presentation les available online after the conference Minimizing waste on eld trip lunches
If you have any additional suggestions, wed love to hear them!Just email us with the subject Green Science.

ContentsTeaching Ethics to Young Scientists:
The Most Important TEKBy Ron Sco, EdD, JD, MA, PT
Nothing in science is as critically important asconducting oneself ethically. This truism must beinterwoven into every curricular thread in everyelementary and secondary science program, andinstructed and reinstructed to young scientistsfrom kindergarten through 12th grade.
The news media today is inundated withstories about scientists breaching their ethical du-ties, with tragic consequences to themselves and tosociety. From falsifying research data and resultsto ghostwriting biased journal articles aboutpharmaceuticals to patenting exclusive control ofthe human genome to prot-making companies atpatients expense, the very integrity of basic sci-ence is seemingly at stake.
Scientists are more than positivist agents, meticulously carrying out scientic experimentsthrough randomized controlled studies. They arealso duciaries to the human race and to the plan-et, bearing the strongest of responsibilities to dothe right thing. In so many ways from forensicsto medical research they are catalysts for life, lib-erty, and the pursuit of happiness.
All human beings are constrained in their
lives by personal morals and by legal obligations.Professionals, including scientists, have an addi-tional duty to conform their ocial conduct tostandards of ethical behavior.
Every young scientist learns the steps inthe scientic method, and the importance of sci-entic rigor in experimentation. Precise method-ology yields accurate, useful results. What may be stressed less often are the potential adverseconsequences of negligent or fraudulent data col-lection and analysis and dissemination of results.Human lives and their well-being often hang inthe balance.
In 1989, the National Academy of Sciencerst published a monograph titled On Beinga Scientist: Responsible Conduct in Research. Now in its second edition, this booklet surveys sa-lient ethical issues in scientic research, including:the scientist in society; social foundations of sci-ence; experimental techniques and the treatmentof data; conicts of interest; publication, author-
ship and allocation of credit; negligence and in-tentional misconduct in science; and respondingto and reporting violations of ethics. This guideis foundational for scientists, including elemen-tary and secondary science students. Its conceptsshould be included in every science curriculum inthe United States.
Ethical problems, issues and dilemmas and
acceptable resolutions can easily be introducedinto science instruction especially through ex-periments. For example, students might be askedwhether it is OK to extrapolate, or ll in, missingdata, when time constraints disallow them fromcompleting a classroom experiment. They alsomay be asked to opine about the ethics of usinganimals for experimentation and dissection. Thereare a myriad of possibilities as many as there areexperiments.
Students need to develop a framework forethical decision-making in science, and in gen-eral. One easy-to-use model is the systems model, with its four steps:
1) Identify an ethical problem, issue or di-lemma;2) Ascertain facts and unknowns about theproblem, and make relevant assumptions;3) Determine realistic solutions to the prob-
lem and implement the optimal one; then,4) Monitor the chosen course of action for ef-cacy, and modify or discard and replace it ifit is unworkable.

In health science, the denitive trend in aempting to contain health care costs is to demand thatpatient care tests, measurements, and interventions be evidence-based (6), that is, grounded in gener-ally-accepted scientic research. If underlying health-related research is awed because of scientistsbreach of ethics, then patients suer and die. The unacceptability of this outcome applies with equalforce across the spectrum of scientic endeavors from the elementary school classroom to the mostprestigious academic research centers of excellence.
It is up to us as teachers to instill values and respect for professional ethics in our young school-based scientists. Practice makes perfect. Create and consistently use relevant and engaging examplesto challenge them, and to build good character. It will pay o in beer student comportment and con-formity to ethical standards, and in greater respect in generations to come for scientists and for scienceitself.
