A Message from President KamasChangewe experienceit every day of our lives. Most of it happens and

we dont even realizeit, until one day our fa-vorite song gets playedon the oldies station. Some change happens

quickly and we react, adjust, andmove on. Then there is the changethat happens somewhere in the mid-

dle, the kind you know is coming andhave time to prepare for, but have ahard time with it just the same. Alongwith changes come all the associatedemotions. The changes happening ineducation now may seem extreme oreven unfair and they have denitelycaused emotions to are, but rest as-

sured that change is here and we wantstudents to ourish as a result.

I have had a remarkable year as Pres-ident-Elect with many memorablemoments, including a truly educa-tional trip to Washington DC, twotestimonies in front of the State Boardof Education and one in front of statelegislators at an Education Commieepublic hearing. I have also served our

organization by chairing the Policiesand Procedures Commiee to over-haul the STAT Bylaws. We have been

diligently working for our members. For most members, STAT is known forthree days of outstanding professionaldevelopment at CAST, the best con-ference in the country. The ExecutiveCommiee is commied to increasingour member benets and making usknown for more than CAST. For ex-

ample, we found that the experiencein Washington DC was so insightfulthat we want to give our members op-portunities to get involved in state leg-islation. We want to make sure teach-ers have access to the information theyneed to be successful in the classroom.

Science educators have such positiveaitudes. I am fortunate to have hadso many role models and mentors tohelp me stay positive and lend an earto solve problems and stop any ex-cuses I may come up with. When youstart feeling angry or frustrated by thechanges, nd the person who inspiresyou and lifts you up and listen to whatthey have to say. Find a way to reener-gize yourself.

Farewell from the Past Presidentby Ross Ann Hill

Wow, how time hasown! With an enormoussigh of relief followed bya plethora of conictingemotions, I leave the of-ce of STAT President.Although it has been anincredible run, it isnt yet

    over.Once again, I encourage

all of you to become involved in the ScienceTeachers Association of Texas. Over the lastseveral years, our membership has growntremendously, indicative of the exciting andstimulating yet challenging actions transpir-ing within our organization.

Recognizing the ever-changing politicalatmosphere in our future, each of you be-comes an important ambassador for scienceeducation. This next year when the legisla-ture is in session, we will have a new StateBoard of Education. The STAT executiveboard has planned several events that willaddress our critical issues and assist us to

become beer advocates for science educa-tion. How thrilled I am that the STAT boardis expanding our role in aiding science edu-cation while asking those in power to help, not hinder, us.

As my role changes to Past President, myfocus has shifted to a more singular goal, theConference for the Advancement of Science

Teaching (CAST) in Corpus Christi Novem-ber 8-10. Currently hundreds of proposalsfor ingenious and creative workshops andshort courses are being reviewed. You can

register for CAST now and get the ExtraEarly Bird Discount of $115.00 (certainly notbirdfeed to science teachers). The housingsite is now accepting reservations also. CASTis one of the largest, if not THE largest, gath-ering of science teachers in the entire nation. However, we pride ourselves on presentinga conference especially targeted for the Texas

science teacher. Addressing our TEKS andSTAAR is unique to our convention, for ex-ample. If you need professional developmentin one of those areas or others, Get YourGeek On and aend CAST!

Also, the STAT award site is currently takingnominations and information for the numer-ous awards presented during CAST. Please

take the time to nominate an outstandingscience educator, or simply encourage himor her to apply since we recognize those inour profession who exemplify the best in ourorganization. (http://www.statweb.org/awards )Remember, the award nomination site closesJune 15th.

Serving as your President has been one of

the highlights of my life. The friends I havemade, the mentors I have met, and the advo-cates for our subject maer have enriched metenfold. Thank you for this exceptional op-portunity.

STEM Strategies: Project Based Learning in Earth/Space Systemsby Terry Talley, EdD

I had the pleasure of working with the eighthgrade students in Mrs. Melanie Burnes classesat La Marque Middle School using Project-basedLearning (PBL) and integrating the EngineeringDesign Process into their learning. Their currentunit of study is in Earth Systems in which theyexplained the processes that cause the phases ofthe moon, the seasons of the Earth, as well as tides.Based on my doctoral research into Inquiry Learn-

ing and the book How Students Learn Science bythe National Research Council, the use of modelsand the design process have been shown to behighly eective in students initially knowing howthese systems work and in dispelling misconcep-tions they may have about the aects of Earth beingcloser to the Sun during certain times of the year.

The students began their study of rotationand revolution with the construction of spinning

tops. The PBL challenge was presented through anentry document in the form of a leer from a cti-tious company called Our Tops are Tops! seek-ing a model of a top that could spin for 20 secondsand cost no more than $70 in materials. It needed toappeal to children between the ages of 10 and 14. Inaddition to the creation of a spinning top, the teamalso needed to plan a marketing campaign strategydesigned in a manner as to gain a market share oftoys for their age group. After dividing into designteams, and assigning roles, students began preview-ing the materials available and drawing two pos-sible prototypes. After discussing the pros and consof each, they were given a budget and told theycould purchase any item available from the sup-ply store. Items such as pencils for spindles were$10 each and paper plates of many sizes and mate-rial were from $20 to $30 each. Additional materialssuch as pennies for weights, paper clips for stability,

marking pens for designs, masking tape, and rub-ber bands provided options that could enhance theperformance of their tops but also added to theirboom line.

Students worked in their design teams dili-gently for 30 minutes, Burne and I were availableas consultants; never directly answering questions, but asking questions about their rational for selec-tion of materials as well as sharing the principles ofmomentum, inertia, center of gravity, balance androtation as a way to move the student along in theirunderstanding of how the spinning top works as asystem and how to improve their models.

The following day, students made oral presenta-tions featuring their models and their marketingcampaign, which included an explanation of whytheir top was able to sustain a spin as well as thebenets of the added modications.

The contract was awarded to multiple teams,in each period. Those who came in under budget, met the specications of the entry document, andwere able to clearly explain the processes of thesystem were provided actual tops and similar toysthat used rotation or revolution for their movement. In each class, through the design experience, model

building, and presentations, students demonstratedthat they were able to express their understandingof rotation and revolution in a way that showed adepth of knowledge - not just the memorization of

    facts and denitions.

As part of the reection about the Tops De-sign Experience, students completed two rubrics. One rubric was to evaluate the quality of theirproduct and the other to self-evaluate their collabo-ration in their team eort. Although each group ofstudent worked on their own model, through thedesign teams presentations and explanations of the

models created, all students were equally knowl-edgeable and prepared for the content-based objec-tive assessment, which will be given at the close ofthe Earth/Space System Unit. When asked for feed-back about the activity, students shared the follow-ing comments, This was fun. I can see how toimprove our top by adding more pennies for mo-mentum like their group did. Ill bet ours wouldspin longer if we would have lowered the base fora lower center of gravity. Our top spun like the

    Earth on its axis.

The follow-up activity which addressed theTexas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) con-tent standards was grounded in the construction of

models of the earth/space system of their choosingusing Project Based Learning and the EngineeringDesign Process. Mrs. Burne and I collaborated onthe design and instruction of that unit as well.

As evident from the above descriptions, ProjectBased Learning has many benets which increaselevels of student achievement. Hands-on learning, student directed inquiry and research, designingand building models for development of concepts,as well as student-generated scientic discourse areall strategies that lead to high levels of engagement. As highlighted in Project-Based Learning (Capraro& Slough, 2009), when actively engaged in PBL,

No maer whether schools have low achievingstudents or high achieving students, a high percent-age of students nd working with real-world proj-ects to be exciting, engaging, fun, satisfying, andmeaningful. When students are actively engagedin their learning and are asking questions aboutwhat they want to know a rich learning environ-ment is created.

When compared to this same unit taughtin a traditional approach (a lecture enhanced witha PowerPoint presentation, a teacher demonstra-tion using a model, students recording notes, theteacher asking comprehension questions, assigningvocabulary to be dened, student completion of an

assignment either a worksheet or questions andproblems from the book, and nally taking a quizor test over the material to show mastery), STEM-based instructional strategies may be the needed

alternative. As many teachers are seeking increased student achievement, increased student motivation tolearn, and decreased student apathy towards preparation for future careers in Science, Technology, Engi-neering, and Mathematics, the integration of these STEM strategies may make the dierence. These dif-ferences ultimately may manifest themselves as: (1) signicantly changes appear in academic achievementresults that teachers are seeking and (2) dierences in more students choosing a STEM career pathway thatstrengthens our future economy.

Dr. Terry Talley is Co-Director or Education Outreach and Instruction at the UTMB SRT-STEM Center. For more inormation about the SRT-STEM Center and the Ofce o Education Outreach, you are invited to visitour website at www.utmb.edu/TSTEM. Dr. Talley can be reached email: [email protected].

    Teaching Mitochondrial Geneticsby Ryan Reardon

AbstractThis report describes a novel, inquiry-

based learning plan developed as part of theGENA educational outreach project. Focusing onmitochondrial genetics and disease, this inter-active approach utilizes pedigree analysis andlaboratory techniques to address non-Mendelianinheritance. The plan can be modied to t avariety of educational goals and is now commer-cially available.

Educational outreach by college and uni-versity faculty has been shown to have tangible

benets for participating students (NationalScience Foundation, 2007). In an eort to in-crease these activities, the American Society ofHuman Genetics partnered with the NationalScience Resources Center in 2006 to establish aprofessional development/research project called

GENA (Geneticist-Educator Network of Allianc-es; http://www.ashg.org/education/gena.shtml), whichwas funded by the National Science Foundation. This initiative sought to promote educationaloutreach on a national level by establishing rig-orous, long-term partnerships between univer-sity geneticists and high school biology teachers. The eld of genetics was deemed an appropri-ate focus of this project because of the explosivegrowth of this discipline in recent years and itsanticipated impact on healthcare in the future, making this an important area of educationalemphasis. Here, we describe the results of oneGENA partnership, a novel high-school-levellearning plan focused on mitochondrial geneticsand its important role in human disease.
