Comparison to State• This presentation will compare the Shelton School
District scores to those of students across the state
• Not an “average” – compares the percent of SSD who meet standard to percent of all students in the state who met standard on the tests
• Our challenge: 64.1% of students in SSD are eligible for F/R meals while 45.5% of students are eligible statewide – when our scores top state scores our kids are beating the odds!
Third Grade Reading
Decreased from 66.4% in 2011 to 60.2% in 2012
Statewide scores dropped from 73.1% to 68.7%
Fourth Grade Reading
Increased from 62.2% in 2011 to 65.9% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 67.3% to 71.4%
Fifth Grade Reading
Decreased from 62.3% in 2011 to 58.5% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 67.7% to 71.0%
Sixth Grade Reading
Increased from 58.0% in 2011 to 65.3% in 2012
Statewide scores stayed constant 70.6%
Seventh Grade Reading
Increased from 51.1% in 2011 to 76.3% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 56.5% to 71.2%
Eighth Grade Reading
Increased from 60.0% in 2011 to 63.1% in 2012
Statewide scores dropped from 68.7% to 67.2%
Tenth Grade Reading
Increased from 76.1% in 2011 to 78.4% in 2012
Statewide scores dropped from 82.6% to 81.1%
Reading Highlights• Reading scores have improved at each grade
level, with the exception of 3rd and 5th
• Scores in third grade went down statewide (possible cohort or test effect?)
• Scores in fifth grade went up statewide (this is an area for further investigation)
• Seventh grade reading scores topped the state for the first time ever!

Increased from 57.3% in 2011 to 58.4% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 61.6% to 65.3%
Fourth Grade Math
Increased from 54.1% in 2011 to 57.8% in 2012
Statewide scores stayed constant at 59.3%
Fifth Grade Math
Increased from 45.3% in 2011 to 49.8% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 61.3% to 63.7%
Sixth Grade Math
Increased from 49.2% in 2011 to 59.9% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 58.8% to 61.4%
Seventh Grade Math
Increased from 49.1% in 2011 to 64.5% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 57.0% to 59.2%
Eighth Grade Math
Increased from 57.3% in 2011 to 63.4% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 50.4% to 55.4%
All Grades Algebra EOC
Increased from 56.1% in 2011 to 69.7% in 2012

Math Highlights• Math scores increased at all grade levels 3-8• At fourth and sixth grade we made progress towards
closing the gap between SSD and state scores• Fifth grade, though trending in the right direction, has a
persistent gap (this is an area for further investigation)• Seventh grade scores topped the state for the first time
ever!• Eighth grade scores topped the state for two years
running!• On the Algebra EOC we made progress towards closing
the gap between SSD and state scores• Geometry EOC scores decreased while state scores
increased (this is an area for further investigation)

Increased from 47.4% in 2011 to 54.2% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 55.7% to 66.1%
Eighth Grade Science
Increased from 48.0% in 2011 to 57.3% in 2012
Statewide scores increased from 61.6% to 66.3%
All Grades Biology EOC

Science Highlights• Science scores increased at grade 5, though not
as much as scores increased across the state
• Scores increased at grade 8, and we made progress towards closing the gap between SSD and state scores
• In the first year of the Biology EOC, we slightly outperformed schools across the state!

Decreased from 56.2% in 2011 to 48.7% in 2012
Statewide scores dropped slightly from 61.4% to 61.3%
Seventh Grade Writing
Increased from 71.2% in 2011 to 78.1% in 2012
Statewide scores stayed constant at 71.0%
Tenth Grade Writing
Increased from 79.9% in 2011 to 81.9% in 2012
Statewide scores dropped from 86.3% to 85.2%
Writing Highlights• Fourth grade writing scores have fluctuated over
time, this year showing a decrease greater than scores across the state (this is an area for further investigation)
• Seventh grade scores topped the state for two years running!
• Scores increased at grade 10, and we made progress towards closing the gap between SSD and state scores

Board GoalsGOAL 1 Reading Achievement
All students who have attended the Shelton School District for at least two years will read at grade level by the end of the third grade. (2011-12 Gr 3 MSP = 59%)
GOAL 2 Math Achievement Shelton School District math scores will improve every year at every grade level. (All except Geometry EOC)
GOAL 3 Graduation RateThe graduation rate will improve every year, overall and for all groups of students identifiable by ethnicity or economic status. (2011-12 69.1%, 2010-11 88.6%)
