People’s Desire

The government is striving fordevelopment of all sectors based on agriculture.Aim has been set to rise cultivation and productionin the agriculture sector.

Emphasis is being placed on availabilityof sufficient water, which is essential foragriculture. So far, over 200 dams and sluicegates have been built across the nation. Over 300river water pumping stations and over 8,000 tube-wells have been supplying water to the areaswhere dams cannot be built. As such, there areover 2 million acres of farmlands in the entirenation.

Moreover, fallow and virgin lands arebeing reclaimed. Over 11 million acres of virginand fallow lands out of 26 million have beenreclaimed to the cultivable ones. Due to favourableweather and fertile soil, farmers can successfullycultivate paddy, wheat, maize, cereal crops, sesame, groundnut, sunflower, cotton, jute andsugarcane in addition to industrial crops andbeans and pulses.

The farmers apply modern agriculturaltechnology for increasing per-acre yield of paddyand other marketable crops. Double croppingand mixed-cropping patterns benefit the growers.By using quality strains of various crops, thefarmers are trying to export larger volume ofhigh-quality crops to the foreign market.

At present, the country has over 57 millionacres of arable lands. Over 16 million acres ofmonsoon paddy and over 3 million acres ofsummer paddy produce over 1566 million basketsof paddy yearly. The larger volume of greengram, pigeon pea and mung bean are beingexported to the foreign market. Myanmar standstop in growing beans and pulses in the SoutheastAsian region.

As the State is providing modernagricultural technology and other necessaryassistance for the agricultural sector, strenuousefforts are to be made for building soundagricultural foundations to be able to shape anindustrialized nation.

JAKARTA, 12 Dec—Fossils of a giant stork havebeen discovered on a far-flung Indonesian island thathas been home to many extreme-sized creatures fromtiny human-like “hobbits” and dwarf elephants to theworld’s largest-known rats and lizards.

Authors Hanneke Meijer and Rokus Due wrote inthe December issue of the Zoological Journal of theLinnean Society that leg bones from the maraboustork, which lived 20,000 to 50,000 years ago, indicateit stood around 6 feet (180 centimetres) tall and weighedup to 35 pounds (16 kilograms). It appears to have beenprimarily land-based, they wrote. The bones werefound during excavations of the Liang Bua cave in thewest of the island of Flores at a depth of around 15 feet(4.7 metres).

Flores, located on Indonesia’s eastern edge, hasnever been connected to another island or mainland, shaping evolution of historic wildlife, with many small-sized warm blooded animals growing larger thanelsewhere on the planet, and big-sized mammalsbecoming more diminutive, said Colin Groves, aprofessor at Australian National University who wasnot related to the study, citing the so-called “islandrule” in biology.

Double happiness for worldeconomy in China trade data

BEIJING, 12 Dec—China’s importsand exports were much stronger thanexpected in November, robust numbersthat could clear the way for the centralbank to raise interest rates as soon as thisweekend.

The data on Friday offered a double-hit of good news for the global economy:a reminder that Chinese demand was stillgrowing apace and an indication that theUS economy was picking up steam.

“The import figures reflect continuedstrong domestic demand, which is not toosurprising, especially as the governmenthas been taking measures to increaseimports to reduce the trade surplus,” saidJian Chang, an economist with Barclays

Capital in Hong Kong. Imports rose 37.7 percent from a

year earlier, easily topping forecasts of a24.2 percent increase.”It shows the USeconomy is recovering well,” said WangHan, an economist at CEBM in Shanghai.“The central bank will raise reserverequirements this weekend and theninterest rates next week.”

The volume of imports and exportsboth set monthly records, the customsauthority said in a statement. That leftChina with a trade surplus of 22.9 billionUS dollars in November, the seventhstraight month in which it has been in thehefty 17 billion US dollars-29 billion USdollars range.—MNA/Reuters

Full sequence confirms Haiticholera came from Asia

WASHINGTON, 12 Dec—Detailed genetic testsconfirm that the cholera strain that has killed more than2,000 people in Haiti came from south Asia and mostclosely resembles a strain circulating in Bangladesh,US researchers reported on Thursday.

While they cannot trace who or what preciselycarried the cholera to Haiti, the team at HarvardMedical School and Pacific Biosciences of CaliforniaInc say their findings show extra measures may beneeded to help prevent the spread of cholera from onedisaster area to another — a contentious issue becausemany Haitians have blamed the outbreak on Nepalesetroops sent to help them as part of a United Nationsmission.

Aid workers from more than 10,000 organizationsall over the world have poured into Haiti to help aftera devastating January earthquake, which levelled muchof the capital and killed 250,000 people.

Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine,Harvard’s Dr John Mekalanos and colleagues said theyalso confirmed that Haiti’s cholera strain carries amutation associated with causing more severe disease.

“Our genome data puts the Haiti strain in thegroup that is the worst of the worst,” Mekalanos said.

Tale of two sisters points to changing Gypsy world

In this 25 Nov, 2010 picture. NarcisaTranca, 22, holds one of her childrenin Udupu, Romania. Among Gypsies,or Roma, marrying young is a tradi-tion born of the need to survive in an

environment where young womenwere fair game for non-Roma men.

INTERNET

UDUPU, 12 Dec — Halfway throughanother 12-hour day, Narcisa Trancascrubs the floor, one eye on her infant sonand her thoughts on the tasks ahead —cleaning, cooking, feeding the pigs andchickens. Forced to abandon big dreamsand marry at 15, this has been her life for

the past seven years — locked in a joy-less union she has come to accept.

On the outskirts of Bucharest, theteeming capital to the west of this drabvillage, younger sister Claudia takes abreak from her English homework. She’sin her last year of high-school andpreparing for college, where she plansto study languages. Asked about mar-riage, the straight A-student giggles, shrugs, and says: “There’s time.”

Though separated by only four yearsand a two-hour drive, Narcisa, 22 andClaudia, 18, are worlds apart. But theirlives represent more than a tale of twogifted sisters going separate ways. Theyare Gypsies — and their story reflectscreeping change within Europe’s down-trodden minority. They offer a glimmerof hope that coming generations may beallowed to choose education instead ofearly marriage, empowering them toescape squalor on the fringes of society.

“I was wrong,” says Marcel Tranca, when asked about his decision to forcehis daughter Narcisa into marriage. Look-ing at Claudia, he adds: “But I learnedfrom that mistake.” Among Gypsies, orRoma, marrying young is a tradition bornof the need to survive in an environmentwhere young women were fair game fornon-Roma men. Romanian Roma, in par-ticular, turned to early marriage during500 years of slavery that ended only inthe 19th century. —Internet

Last month, retired electrician Mr LeGuennec revealed he had a treasure troveof 271 pieces, including lithographs, cubistpainting, notebooks and a watercolourthought to be worth about 60m euros(£50.2m). He installed burglar alarms at anumber of the artist’s homes in France inthe three years before Picasso’s death in1973.

While Mr Le Guennec said the workswere gifts, Picasso’s family have dismissedhis explanation saying the artist would nothave given so many works away to oneperson. They have filed a legal case againstMr Le Guennec claiming “illegalpossession” of the paintings.

Police have seized the art as part oftheir investigation. Picasso’s chauffeurMaurice Bresnu, meanwhile, is well knownto art scholars. Some works from MrBresnu’s Picasso collection have alreadybeen sold at auction in the 1990s.Thursday’s sale was to have included anumber of sketches and minor Picassoworks given to Mr Bresnu.—Internet

Life expectancy slips, stroke dipsto No 4 killer

NEW YORK, 12 Dec — US life expectancy has droppedslightly by about a month after mostly inching up for manyyears, the government reported Thursday. The preliminaryreport indicates that a baby born in 2008 can expect to liveto 77.8 years if current trends continue. That’s down a bitfrom an all-time high of 77.9 years for 2007. A similar dipoccurred in 2005, and life expectancy also dropped in 1993.

The lead author of the report, Arialdi Minino, calledthe 2008 change minuscule and said it would take years ofdata to determine if that’s a trend. Life expectancy wasdown for both men and women. The gap between blacksand whites closed a little, to a 4.6-year difference in lifeexpectancy; black men for the first time topped 70 years.Overall, women continue to live longer, until about 80,compared to 75 for men.

What’s behind the slip in overall life expectancy isn’tknown. “It’s something to keep our eyes on,” said KenThorpe, a health policy professor at Emory University inAtlanta.—Internet
