Cultivating an environment that allows start-ups and entrepreneurs with global ambition to thrive is a key priority for Enterprise Ireland. As one of the most prolific start-up investors in the world, Enterprise Ireland’s Start-Up Showcase is a focal point in our annual calendar and I am delighted to introduce you to the innovative and pioneering start-up companies that make up the Class of 2017.

During 2017, we approved 181 investments in exciting new businesses, 55% of which were based in locations outside of Dublin, moving us closer to achieving our strategic objective of driving scale at a regional level.

• 90 of the Class of 2017 are classed as ‘High Potential Start-Ups’ (HPSUs). This title represents their stage of development and ambitious projections for job creation and export growth.

• A further 91 new businesses received support under our ‘Competitive Start Funds’ (CSFs) having successfully competed against over 700 applicants to secure investment.

Targeting under-represented sources of start-ups remains a key focus for Enterprise Ireland. 2017 was an excellent year for start-ups sourced from third level research, a record year for female entrepreneurship and saw impressive growth in key sectors:

• 15 spin-outs from the third level sector

• 67 investments in female-led start-ups, representing 35% of all start-up investments approved by Enterprise Ireland

• 166 entrepreneurs finessed their new business idea as participants on Enterprise Ireland’s nationwide New Frontiers programme

• The medtech, fintech and agtech sectors were well represented with strong growth opportunities


During 2017, Enterprise Ireland invested more than €30 million directly in start-up companies, to support their competitive capabilities and international growth. We invested in seed and venture capital funds, such as Seroba Life Sciences, Frontline Ventures, ACT Venture Capital and Suir Valley Ventures. Combined, these funds will put €188 million of available new risk capital into the market, improving access to appropriate funding for early stage innovative companies.

In addition to the four new regional accelerator programmes, we continued to work with key stakeholders across the start-up eco-system, most notably our colleagues in the LEOs (Local Enterprise Offices), EU-BICs (Business Innovation Centres) and HBAN (Halo Business Angel Network) to optimise national entrepreneurship.

One of the biggest challenges Irish businesses currently face is the impact of Brexit which is already evident in the slowdown of export growth to the UK market. Enterprise Ireland will continue to work with the Class of 2017 to prepare for the challenges of Brexit by helping them to build scale through innovation, introducing measures that drive competitiveness and ultimately to expand their reach into markets beyond the UK.
