New Main School Building for Cann River P-12 College
As part of the education plan to remove all potential future asbestos risks from school I re-ceived a letter from the minister, James Merlino, indicating the intention to replace our main building with permanent modular building. They have allocated a budget $2.057 million dol-lars for this. I have been in continual communication with department seeking clarification re: a number of issues including:
the quality and design of the building in regard to us being Bushfire at Risk Register (BARR) school.
The capacity of the building to be a Neighbourhood Safer Place
The capability of the building to cater for the complex requirements of our P-12 College, both in running the school whilst construction takes place and in the final construction.
This process seemingly will occur quickly with contractors (including ‘a building surveyor, a plumber, an electrician, a hygienist and removalist to conduct audits on existing building materi-als and make the site safe following any audits.’) arriving within the next month. Hopefully this will be a highly positive project for our school and community.
Today’s Jinga features more of our Reconcilia-tion Week Activities.
Also thanks to Aileen, our elder, who spoke to our sen-ior students, this week in her role with Indigenous Family Violence Regional Action Group. She also donat-ed beautiful message sticks to the school.
Writing
One main areas of staff work is innovatory, approaches to teaching writing. Our assembly feature Zarhara reading her great story to the whole school: there is many other great pieces of writing being completed.

I discovered cicadas, a wombat burrow, deer tracks and cow
pooh.
I saw Rapunzel’s hair. Rapunzel’s hair was really long.

The wishing stone By Zarhara 5.6.19
So… the wishing stone broke. Mr Spink went looking for another one. Mr Spink searched and searched. He found another magical stone. Mr Spink got his wish. Mr Spink wished for a really big guitar. He played all day. Sadly the wish wore off. Mr Spink screamed, “I want another wish! This is the worst day ever!”
On the beach, amongst the sea weed, a glowing wishing stone wait-ed patiently for somebody to pick it up. As Mr Spink strolled along the shore, the wishing stone began to pulse and slowly spin. As the stone spun faster and faster, it turned a dazzling white. Beau-tiful rainbow colours spiralled out from it and it made a really loud humming sound. Mr Spink couldn’t take his eyes off it. A terrible storm exploded into the sky. Rain poured, lightning flashed, thunder roared. The wishing stone broke. Mr Spink didn’t get his wish. Mr Spink cried.
He stomped his foot so hard the wishing stone zoomed into the air. Mr Spink walked to the river as fast as he could. He found a glowing stone in the water. It made Mr Spink’s eyes stare at it. He said, “I can’t believe it. Another wishing stone!” He wished he had his own wishing stone. “Please, please…” he thought. Mr Spink’s wish came true. “Thank you” he smiled.
Earthquakes By Matilda L.
Earthquakes are shaking, rolling or sudden shocks.
They are the earth’s natural means of releasing stress.
There are twenty plates along the surface of the earth that
move continuously and slowly past each other.
When the plates squeeze or stretch huge rocks form at the
edges of the plates causing an earthquake.
Earthquakes can happen anywhere on earth but are more likely
to occur in certain areas like Japan.
Earthquakes can cause volcanoes, mud slides and avalanches.
The safest place to go when an earthquake is active is away
from power lines and bridges because it could collapse.
A seismograph records how much an earthquake shakes and
for how long it vibrates.
EARTHQUAKES By Seth
An earthquake is a sudden movement of the ground. They can destroy big buildings
and giant trees until there is nothing left. The animals get scared especially the ba-
bies.
Earthquakes can cause tsunamis. More than a million earthquakes happen every
year. Earthquakes can also cause rock and mud slides. Earthquakes usually last less
than a minute.
When there is an earthquake, most of the time you should go in the bathroom . Earth-
quakes happen when two large pieces of the Earth’s crust suddenly slip. Earth-
quakes usually happen on the edges of large sections of the Earth’s crust called Tec-
tonic Plates.

VOLCANOES By Dom
A volcano is found in a mountain.
A volcano is where red hot lava
shoots up out of the mountain.
Gases and melted rocks spill over.
Hot ash goes up in the air and makes
a big ash cloud in the sky.
TSUNAMI
By Claire
A tsunami is a large ocean wave usually caused by underwater earthquake or a vol-
canic explosion. Tsunamis are not tidal waves, tidal waves are caused by the forces
of the moon, the sun and the planets upon the tides. As well as it goes over the wa-
ter. With a tidal wave, the water typically flows in circles but with a tsunami, water
flows straight. This is why a tsunami causes so much damage.
On average, two tsunamis occur per year throughout the world which does damage
near the source.
Approximately every 15 years, a destructive ocean-wide tsunami occurs. Tsunamis
have been known to surge vertically as high as 30 metres. Most tsunamis cause the
sea to rise no more than 3 metres. Tsunamis are cool and huge.
VOLCANOES By Rhylee
What is a volcano? A volcano is a natural disaster.
A volcano can make up to six different natural disasters hap-
pen. They include tsunami, flash flood, earthquake, mud slide
and rock fall.
A volcano is a mountain. In the bottom of the mountain
there is a pool of lava. The lava can travel as far as fifty-
one kilometres away from the volcano.
The rock that goes flying out of the volcano when it
erupts is called pumice (a light rock that forms during an
eruption).
When a volcano is in the water, it spits out ash and big
rocks but no lava.
There is one cool volcano which is called a mud volcano.
A mud volcano is shaped as a cone and it is made out of
mud. The mud volcano can get up volcanoes and eighty
or more under the to thirty centimetres (yes, it is a mini
one!).
On Earth there is more than 1500 active oceans.
A volcano is so cool! I like the pumice, lava and the other

Cobar
Hi! My name is Kaiden and I would like to tell you a bit about where I used to live.
Cobar is hot, it gets up to 30-40 degrees a day. Cobar is in New South Wales, the dirt is red, Dad
used to work at the CSA gold mine. There’s about 450-500 people in Cobar, it’s not in the
mountains, the beach is not close and it feels like the desert.
I had lots of friends like Jeremy, Joe, Corey, Nate, Jack, Hayden, Brandon, Aiden, Rhylee, Chloe,
Cooper, Willow, Blaire, Brady and Reece. I had lots of memories and lots of family members
there as well.
There was also lots of fun things like the park, the skate park, school, footy and soccer field.
School was fun, I did Maths, Science, Language, Art, Sport and quiet reading. My favourite
subject is Art. I did cross country and I had to run three kilometres to make it to the next race.
And I made it to Parkes, the second race but I didn’t race because the practice run made me feel
sick and the track was five kilometres. There was also a swimming carnival and I made it
through four races. But when I was practicing for the second race I got sun burnt. And I was the
fastest runner in the grade 3-4 class.
I like Cann River more because the dirt isn’t red, the grass is green and not dead and it’s not 40
degrees like Cobar is.

It was most interesting to read the article “Riverina cabinet” SRM 15/5/19 and to learn that
this beautiful piece of furniture salvaged from the wreck of the “Riverina” at Gabo Island in
1927, has been put on display at the Mallacoota Bunker Museum .
Our local history group at Cann RIver has been prompted to contribute photos of two other
major items of salvage from the same vessel which are major structural items in the Cann
RIver Hotel. It was during the building of the hotel in 1927 that owner Mrs VIolet Connley
purchased the saloon doors and a staircase from the beached ship to incorporate in the
new hotel building. The story goes that Mrs Connley was transported by “flying fox” from
the beach to the deck of the “Riverina” in order to select her purchases which were duly
transported to Cann RIver to become the much admired additions to the decor of the hotel
that we still see today.
Thanks to the current proprietors of the Cann RIver Hotel for access to photograph the inte-
rior despite current refurbishment which is underway.
