DETROIT’S CABRERA OUT SIX WEEKS WITH CALF STRAIN
Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera will be sidelined with a calf injury for at least six weeks after the Tigers placed the AL batting leader on the disabled list for the first time in his career.
The two-time AL MVP pulled up while break-ing for second on an attempted hit-and-run in the fourth inning of Friday’s 8-6 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. An MRI showed a strain of his calf mus-cle but no injury to his Achilles tendon.
Cabrera is hitting .350 with 15 homers and 54 RBIs.
“It is a grade-3 calf strain, and it’s probably going to be six weeks,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said before Saturday’s game against Toronto. “When you lose the best hitter on the planet, it’s a huge blow.”
In the last two seasons, Cabrera played through a sports hernia, a broken bone in his foot and bone spurs in his ankles.
A nine-time All-Star, Cabrera will miss this year’s game at Cincinnati on July 14. He led AL first baseman in the latest fan balloting update with nearly 11.6 million votes. Kansas City’s Eric Hosmer was second at 9.15 million. Final totals are to be announced Sunday.
Detroit selected the contract of third baseman Jofry Marte from Triple-A Toledo. Catcher Alex Avila drew the start at first on Saturday.
STRASBURG EXITS EARLY IN NATS’ WINWashington Nationals’ pitcher Stephen Stras-
burg left Saturday’s game against the San Fran-cisco Giants in the fourth inning after experiencing tightness in his left side.
Strasburg allowed one hit over 3 2/3 scoreless innings in his third start since coming off the dis-abled list. He missed nearly four weeks due to neck tightness.
Staked to an early 3-0 lead, Strasburg winced and grabbed in the area of his left side after making an attempt at Buster Posey’s groundball out.
“It’s pretty tight,” Strasburg said after Wash-ington’s 9-3 win. “Don’t really have an explanation. Everything felt pretty good. I just threw a pitch to Posey there. He grounded out and I just felt it grab.”
After a stoppage in the game and a lengthy con-versation with Nationals manager Matt Williams and a team trainer, Strasburg walked off the mound and into the dugout.
“I wanted to at least get through the inning and see if we could do something about it,” Strasburg said.
His manager wasn’t about to take a risk with the prized pitcher. Though only 5-5 with a 5.16 ERA in 2015, Strasburg is 48-35 with a 3.22 ERA for his career.
In his previous two starts since returning, Stras-burg went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 15 strikeouts. He dominated the Giants before leaving.
Outfielder Bryce Harper hit his 25th home run of the season in the first inning to back Strasburg.
TWINS’ SANTANA STARTS SUNDAY IN RETURN FROM SUSPENSION
The surprising Minnesota Twins, who are in second place in the American League Central, have added a front-line starter for the second half of the season.
Right-hander Ervin Santana has been reinstated after an 80-game drug suspension and is scheduled to start Sunday against the Kansas City Royals.
“It’s a little different than making a trade, I think,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said Saturday. “Obvi-ously, you’re adding a good player to a club that you didn’t have previous. We all knew this one was coming. It was just a matter of riding out the storm.
“The impact might be similar, but the mental part is different. It’s not all of a sudden, hey, we traded for this guy. You just know you’re going to have this guy available to you at some point.”
Santana signed a $55 million, four-year contract with the Twins in December after going 14-10 with a 3.95 ERA last season for Atlanta. The 32-year-old tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and sat out the first 80 games of this season.
He went 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in three rehab starts with Triple-A Rochester, striking out 11 in 20 2/3 innings.Santana pitched eight scoreless innings with no walks against Pawtucket on Tuesday.
To make room for him on the roster, the Twins optioned right-hander Alex Meyer to Rochester on Saturday. Meyer had a 16.88 ERA in two relief appearances.
Molitor said Trevor May, who went 4-7 with a 4.37 ERA in 15 starts, would be assigned to the bullpen with Santana now starting.
GARCIA SAVES WIN FOR WHITE SOXThe last-place Chicago White Sox got got the big
catch they needed to win four straight.Avisail Garcia robbed Chris Davis of a tying
home run with a leaping catch in the ninth inning, and the White Sox held off the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 on Saturday.
Garcia slapped his glove after making the sensa-tional grab.
“I was playing no doubles because they have a power hitter,” Garcia said. “I was playing close to the fence, so I had a chance to get it. So I got it.”
David Robertson earned his 18th save in 22 opportunities — with a huge assist from Garcia.
