1. Project performance & evaluation Seafood Jobs Tasmania is an online hub which was officially launched on 8th June 2018, and has been developed to facilitate a staged roll out new features. This report marks the conclusion of Stage 2 and completion of the base online platform.

The key objective of Seafood Jobs Stage 2 was to further develop the online hub, into a content rich portal in order to meet the overarching project objectives (See Section 2). The Stage 2 target objectives included:

1. Improved linkages between workers and real training needs with the integration of data from Seafood RTOs;

2. Improved responsiveness of training providers who will have direct access to live data from jobseekers and employees; and

3. Increased number of users to the site and increased content available on the site.

Details about how the project has addressed each of the target objectives is outlined below.

Site Users An evaluation of the website performance, in relation to Target Objective 3, is detailed below.

1. Site Traffic Data collected from Google Analytics comparing the Stage 1 and Stage 2 reporting periods, spanning from 20 April 2018 to 12 March 2019.

Figure 1 Number of active site users over the reporting period

Site traffic varies daily, ranging from 10 to 130 visits per day (Figure 1). Peaks in site traffic occur when new jobs are listed.

2. Active Users Data collected by the administrator of seafoodjobs.org. These users have signed up to the site, and have created accounts during the reporting period. The number of active site registrants has increased from 68 to 317 people, with the majority of users being Jobseekers (Table 2).

Table 2 Active site users

Stage 1 - Jun 2018 Stage 2 - Mar 2019 Sign-ups total 68 317

3. Conversion Rate Website conversion rates are useful to track the effectiveness of a website in funnelling users towards registration or sign-up. The conversion rate is a product of the website usability, performance and aesthetics. The higher the conversion rate, the better the retention of users.

User conversion rate % = sign ups / new users

Stage 1 June 2018 = 68/800

= 0.085 (8.5%)

Stage 2 March 2019 = 317/6,234

= 0.051 (5.1%)

The user conversion rate gives an indication of the success of communication strategy, and ‘inventiveness’ to sign up once interacting with the site. According to leading digital marketing benchmark reports by Monetate.com and MarketingSherpa.com, the average global website conversion rate for sign-ups in 2018 sits between 0.2 and 11%. Seafoodjobs.org is well within this range, reporting a conversion rate at March 2019 of 5.1%, down from 8.5% in June 2018.

4. Employer Survey Response Employers using seafoodjobs.org were asked for feedback on the sites performance. Responses are listed below:

“We are getting favorable responses from your site. The coverage is good and overall it’s a great addition to our normal avenues of advertising.”

“After advertising through Seafood Jobs, Seek and Huon’s web page, approximately 90% are filled”

“[I] Only check the Job Seeker Register occasionally as I’ve found many of the listed candidates end up applying for one of our jobs anyway. No discernable differences between candidates compared to other sites”

Page 8: Stage 2 Final Report - Skills Tasmania

FINAL REPORT

8

“Overall, website is easy to use. Tend to only use the ‘Post a Job’ page and to have a look at jobs posted by competitors.”

“I’m not sure how the seafood site can attract more traffic, but it possibly needs to look at getting more traction.”

All employers commented that the best feature was the direct social media post when a job is advertised. The social post generates a lot of interest in the position, and prompts people to visit the site. This is reflected in the main traffic channel being social media (Figure 2a).

Career Pathway Map Detailed career pathway maps provide rich content on the Seafood Jobs website. This information has never been collated or available for the seafood sector in Tasmania, or the rest of Australia. Mapping out the areas of interest and skills required for each job was the core task in completing the pathway map, and was completed by the TSIC PM with assistance from Seafood and Maritime Training (refer to Appendix 1 for full details).

From the review, core areas of interest were assigned to the career sections to create a base map. These areas of interest contain ‘clusters’ of core skillsets. The ‘how many jobs’ icons put the number of roles into perspective. The user is also able to visualize which roles are on water, and which may be performed on land. The resulting map is interactive and mobile responsive, developed using HTML5 code by the TSIC PM.

The career map was designed to be user friendly and easily convey simple information. Behind the map was a complex and detailed process to collate and analyze the career information about into groups and skills. This took considerable time for the TSIC PM, and considerable time coding the map that you see on the seafoodjobs.org site.

The aim of the career map is to demonstrate that there is more than one pathway into and within seafood, and that skills are overwhelmingly transferrable across areas of interest and across sectors. Another key function of the map is to demonstrate the high skill level of many roles within the industry, which are becoming increasingly technical. All skills and training link directly to course details and sign up on the Seafood and Maritime Training website, University of Tasmania website, TasTafe website and Commercial Dive Academy. Positions link through to the ‘Good Careers Guide’ website where available to give more detail about position descriptions and roles.

Improved linkages and responsiveness of RTO The scope of linkages between seafoodjobs.org and Seafood and Maritime Training (SMT) was assessed early in the project. The options presented were:

1. Full integration of the site with VETtrack (RTO client software) 2. Direct links to SMT via seafoodjobs.org training page- Career Pathway Map 3. SMT full access to Jobseeker portal

It became apparent that integration with VETtrack was not necessary to achieve full linkages and responsiveness with the seafood RTO (SMT). This option was initially explored to achieve greater connectivity between students of the RTO, who were assumed to be Jobseekers, and the website seafoodjobs.org. It was quickly established that training commenced once the Jobseeker had started new employment, not before. This option was not pursued.

Direct links from the Career Pathway Map to the SMT course pages provide the links needed for students to piece together the ‘industry puzzle’. This also provides improved information about the minimum training standards within industry.

SMT now has full access to the Employer side of the seafoodjobs.org portal. They can see when employers post new jobs, which alerts them to upcoming training needs of the employer. This was particularly useful for the recent surge in employment from salmon companies (late 2018), which resulted in unprecedented demand for training. This has certainly improved the responsiveness of the RTO to industry training needs.

SMT was interviewed upon completion of the project to gauge the impact of Seafood Jobs on their business. A few key comments from the interview were:

“Seafood Jobs closes the link between industry and training”

“It is great for people looking to enter the industry, and don’t know what skills they need”

“There is a lot of information out there, this centralizes things”

- James Garde, Seafood and Maritime Training

2. Project output quality evaluation Stage 2 marks the completion of the Seafood Jobs Workforce Development project. TSIC has delivered a professional and user friendly online platform which is a powerful tool for industry workforce development activities. The site has grown in popularity since its conception, and will continue to be a feature in TSIC strategic workforce activities.

The Seafood Jobs project has actively contributed towards achieving:

Retaining skilled workers, and upskilling existing workers. Growth (jobs growth). Improved value of careers (social license) - real and perceived value. Improved professionalism of industry. Better communication between sectors.

In general, Seafood Jobs provides a professional and coordinated portal for the seafood industry. It acts to fill a knowledge gap in the skills and career types within the industry, and is a valuable resource for prospective employees and students. The interactive Career Map provides a tool for existing workers to see where their skill sets will fit across multiple roles. This will assist with retaining skilled workers within the industry.

Already we have seen huge growth in the industry, in particular, the salmonid aquaculture sector, who aim to be a $2 billion industry by 2020. Growth in wildcapture fisheries continues to be problematic, and will remain a focus for TSIC workforce development activities moving forward.

Extension and Adoption The Seafood Jobs website will not be closed at the completion of this project. Seafood Jobs has been developed to address actions identified in the Seafood Industry Workforce Development Plan (2013). A new Seafood Industry Workforce Development Plan has been reviewed by an industry Reference Group in late 2018, and this has largely been driven by the outcomes of the Seafood Jobs project.
