From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. Staffed by The Redemptorists Years ago I saw a movie on the life of Corrie ten Boom and her sister Betsie. They were both devout Christians who lived in the Netherlands. During the war after the Nazis had occupied their country Corrie ten Boom and her sister made the generous and courageous decision to hide Jews and others who were being sought by the Nazis. Eventually they were both arrested by the Nazis and sent to the concentration camp. Betsie died in 1944 but Corrie lived a long life of service, shel- tering those in need. In reflecting back on her life, Corrie ten Boom once said: “The measure of a life is not its duration but its donation”. What is important in the end is not how long we have lived but how much we have given. This weekend is commitment weekend for the Annual Catholic Appeal for the Archdio- cese of Boston. Once a year as the season of Lent begins, we are asked to support the ministry of the wider Church, the ministry which reaches our beyond our parish to the greater Body of Christ throughout the Archdiocese of Boston. While the Church has certainly had its share of difficulties these past years, it is important to remember that the Church also has a large network of agencies which minster to the poor, educate children, assist the sick and the dying, and protect refugees and immigrants. The agen- cies here in the Archdiocese of Boston serve all people from birth until death, ready to reach out to anyone in need. Once a year, we are asked to help fund the ministry of the Archdiocese, the help financially supports the vast array of services that the Church provides. MASS INTENTIONS FROM THE RECTOR

StewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipReflection“A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.” (Luke 6:43)

Are you using your God-given gifts in the way God intended? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan. Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glory of His name.

SEASON OF LENT

The Basilica welcomes and invites you to join us on Ash Wednesday, March 6th and throughout Lent as we are reminded of the Paschal Mystery in Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection. During this season of preparation, Lent helps to deepen our faith by our individual

and common acts of prayer, fasting and sacrifice.

Lenten RegulationsAbstinence -Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday (March 6, 2019) and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.

Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday (March 6, 2019) and Good Friday (April 19, 2019) meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.

Regarding other weekdays of Lent, participation in daily Mass and the voluntary observance of fasting is recommended. Commendable, particularly during Lent, is generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing our abundance, the traditional Lenten Devotions and all the self-denial summed up in the Christian concept of “mortification.”

Ash Wednesday Schedule7:00am, 12:10pm, 5:00pm and 7:00pm in Spanish. Ashes will not be distributed outside of Mass.

Stations of the CrossFridays during Lent7:00pm

Every Friday evening during Lent, we invite you to walk the Way of the Cross with our priests and parishioners in the Basilica for Stations of the Cross.

Fr. Dabney will lead a parish day of reflection to focus on Lent as a season of healing and hope in the Parish Center on Saturday, March 30th. Save the date and join as we come together as a community.

HISPANIC COMMUNITY
