From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. Staffed by The Redemptorists You will notice that we have a new expanded Sunday bulletin format starting this week with additional pages. Our hope is that this will allow for sharing more information among our various communities since we will have a section for our Hispanic community, our Haitian community, and our school community. This will also allow us to share with you more information from the Archdiocese of Boston. Our church is a liv- ing, active, and diverse community and it is important that we celebrate all the wonderful things that happen here. It is also important that we are aware of all is happening. It is our hope that this new format for the bulletin will help make known to everyone the beauty of our Basilica community and all that we do for the glory of God. Also, this week we celebrate Independence Day, July 4th. Of course, this is a day to thank God for the gift of our freedom, especially that we have the freedom to worship and to speak our opinions. On a spiritual level, Independence Day is a great time to remember not only the freedom our country has given to us but the freedom that Jesus Christ has gained for us through his death and resurrection. We have the freedom of knowing that God’s mer- cy and forgiveness are infinite, the freedom to approach our God in prayer and in the Eucha- rist whenever we want. The freedom the Spirit of Christ gives us to reach out in ministry. The freedom we celebrate here in the United Sates, is only a symbol of the true freedom we enjoy in Jesus Christ through the gift of faith. Finally, as we celebrate the Fourth of July, let us remember all victims of gun violence in this country and truly pray that all people who live here will be able to live to their full potential without fear. As Catholics we are all called to serve in ministry. However, many of us are unsure how to use our talents and gifts to build God’s Church. Talk to God and ask Him what He wants you to do. The next time one of your fellow parishioners asks you to help or join a committee, it may be the answer to your prayer.

MASS INTENTIONS FROM THE RECTOR

e Sacrament of BaptismFor Catholics, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, baptism is the Church’s way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God. Christ Himself ordered His disciples to preach the Gospel to all nations and to baptize those who accept the message of the Gospel. In His encounter with Nicodemus (John 3:1-21), Christ made it clear that baptism was necessary for salvation: “Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” The sacrament is not a mere formality; it is the very mark of a Christian, because it brings us into new life in Christ.

The Rite of Baptism is celebrated each month at the Basilica. We require that at least one parent be a registered parishion-er and attend Mass here on a regular basis. Raising your child in the parish community is an important aspect of living and teaching the faith. Parishioner registration forms and baptism applications are available at the Rectory Office. The form must be fullt completed and returned with an official birth certificate attached.

Baptisms occur every month:Spanish – First Sunday of the month at 1:30pmEnglish – Second Sunday of the month at 1:30pm

Children over the age of 7 years old must attend Religious Ed-ucation classes before being baptized. If an adult wishes to be baptized, registration is required through RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).
