From the Desk Of Fr. John We continue to celebrate the Great Feast of Easter…the Death, Resurrection and Ascen-sion of the Lord to the Right Hand of the Fa-ther. This we call the ‘Mystery of Faith. Jesus has truly risen from the dead and has appeared to His disciples to confirm their faith. It was diffi-cult for the disciples to understand the meaning of resurrection and the reality of it. They seemed to be blinded by their traditional understanding of when and how resurrection was to happen. But God was working something ever so special and ‘earth shattering’… ‘And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord de-scended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.’

When the women came to the tomb early in the morning they found the empty tomb and rushed to the disciples to tell them what they had sur-mised…that ‘someone/they’ had taken the body of Jesus. When the disciples arrived at the tomb Peter entered and saw the burial cloths…then John entered and saw the same burial cloths…and began to believe.

The next account of the Gospel we find the disciples together that Sunday evening, but they have locked themselves in the room out of fear of reprisals from the religious leadership that had arrested and put Jesus to death. De-spite all of those obstacles, Jesus appears to them…even though the doors were locked! Jesus greets them with… ‘Peace be with you!’ It is the ultimate gift of the Risen Christ to His friends…intimacy of life with the Risen One and God.

Thomas was not with them that week and re-fused to believe that the Lord had truly risen…and demands proof before he will believe. The good Lord appears on the next Sunday and speaks to Thomas urging him to cease in his dis-belief…and believe. Then Thomas makes a most profound act of faith… ‘My Lord and my God!’

The Gospels are always trying to help us listen-ers to see the Risen Christ through the eyes of ‘first responders’…those who actually are direct witnesses. We are invited to receive their testi-mony and believe. But the gift of faith is not only

for ourselves. Just as the early disciples, we are called to fulfill a mission… ‘As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ We are also called and sent to bring the good news to the world.

Two disciples are walking away from the community of faith filled with discourage-ment and Jesus appears to them. He engag-es them in conversation and begins to explain the meaning of the Scriptures that applied to Him and His suffering and redeeming mission. It was only through Jesus that they will be able to properly interpret the Scriptures and begin to un-derstand God’s plan of salvation…. ‘Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke to us on the road.’

These disciples invite Jesus to join them in their home for a meal. It would prove to be the mo-ment that Jesus reveals Himself to them. For, when Jesus takes the bread, blesses it and gives it to them that their eyes were opened... ‘In the breaking of the bread.’ These two disciples can-not keep this good news to themselves…they immediately make a hasty return to Jerusalem to share with their brothers the good news of the resurrection. So must we!

First Holy Communion…is one of the sacra-ments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist) and is often celebrated with those children and families of the 2nd Grade. (The age of reason in the Church is considered seven (7) years old). By our own tradition, here at SSPP we celebrate 1st Communion on the 1st Sunday of May….which this year is Sunday, May 7 at 1 PM.

This is a special time not only for the children and for their families, but it is a whole parish event! We are all being enriched through the gift of these children and their love and faith. May we all grow in our love for the Eucharist and fully participate in the Sunday Liturgy each and every week!

Thank you…to all who participated in the ‘floor prayers’ claiming and preparing the ‘new space’ for the Lord and all who will be blessed in using it and gathering with us in pray-er and worship!

The Divine Mercy Study The Divine Mercy’s message is one that we can call to mind

simply by remembering ABC. A — Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mer-cy out upon us and upon the whole world. B — Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and for-giveness to others just as He does to us. C — Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive. Learn more about the Divine Mercy on the first and third Wednes-day at 1 pm in Morris Hall.

Want REAL Peace? Try God’s Way. If a person were to travel in the north of England they would en-counter what is left of Hadrian’s Wall. Built by the Emperor Ha-drian to limit incursions by the barbarian Picts of the north, the wall was an impressive struc-ture running 73 miles coast to coast. It was the northern most outpost of the Roman Empire. It was built 1000 years after the Empire began and was manned by soldiers from all parts of the world for another 200 years. However, the Empire did not last. The garrison departed and the stones of the wall were scavenged by the locals for building materials. Historians spill lots of ink debating why Ro-man civilization fell to roving bands of barbarians. Maybe we should look in Holy Scripture for answers. (See --Isaiah 5:1-7 and Matthew 21:33-43). To quote Is 5:7, “The vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, the people of Judah, his cherished plant; He waited for judgment, but see, bloodshed! for justice, but hark, the outcry!” In addition, from Mt. 21: 34-39, Jesus uses the parable of the vineyard to warn the Jews that their rejection and killing the prophets, and their rejection of Him was to have repercussions.

Rome fell for the same reason that the Kingdom of Israel fell in 722 BC and Judah was exiled to Babylon in 587 BC. Divine Providence had blessed all three societies. But he had also called them all to account, and found them wanting. He had planted them as choice vines, but these civilizations had yield-ed sour grapes. Idolatry, adul-tery, and social injustice were some of the fruits produced be-fore their collapse. And how about the people of Jericho? Why did their walls come tumbling down? Could it have anything to do with the fact that they practiced child sacrifice and ritual prostitution? That was then. How about now? America was founded in large part by those seeking to make it “a city on a hill.” Its motto was “in God we trust.” Now judges rule that we can retain this motto without infring-ing on anyone’s rights precisely because we really don’t mean it. America once exported democ-racy. Now it exports abortion. Did you notice the international outcry when the president cut off funds to overseas abortion endeavors? Should we assume America will last forever? We are not invul-nerable, as September 11 and Hurricane Katrina have remind-ed us. If we continue to yield

sour grapes, might our walls come tumbling down also? Perhaps instead of denounc-ing the modern-day prophets, we ought to listen to them. Maybe we can begin honoring God rather than exiling him, respecting marital fidelity ra-ther than ridiculing it, protect-ing the unborn rather than pro-tecting their “terminators,” and caring for the poor rather than abandoning them. Why not do things God’s way instead of the “me first, my way” course? Perhaps if we thank God for blessings and even trials, presenting our needs to Him in faith, we’ll see a change in our mood and even a change in our world. And maybe if we fill our minds with the splendor of truth ra-ther than with the trash of “50 Shades of Gray” we might just notice more joy and serenity in our lives. Theologian Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio reminds us St. Paul speaks of a “peace that surpasses all understanding.” It’s a peace that does not go away even when planes strike towers and hurricanes swamp cities. It starts in the inside but has impact on the outside. Without it, Mother Teresa could have never lasted in the chaos of Calcutta and John Paul the Great could have never made his way through Nazi tanks and Communist op-pression to occupy the chair of Peter. This peace indeed defies com-prehension. But it’s ours for the asking.

Working Together to Help All Succeed

The Annual Catholic Services Appeal (ACSA) is all about: Everyone working together to help everyone in our Diocese

succeed. Because the appeal funds most of the services in the Diocese, its impact is far-reaching: • It helps Seminarians and

Deacons succeed by sup-porting their formation

• It helps our parish families

succeed by providing re-sources for parish Faith For-mation, Youth Ministries, Marriage, Totus Tuus and March for Life Pilgrimage

• It helps those less fortunate

succeed by supporting so-cial concerns including Black and Hispanic ministry, Project Rachel and Respect Life

• And it helps each parish succeed by consolidating adminis-

trative support to provide services more efficiently and at less cost. If the Diocese did not provide many of these services, each parish would have to provide for them.

Our parish ACSA assessment/goal for 2016-2017 is $93,798 and we have pledges of $59,725.

We will complete our efforts to reach our goal with an in-pew appeal on May 6-7.

You Can Help Our Missions at Home This Weekend

Do you ever think about areas of own country as missions? Cur-rently over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pasto-ral work needed in their communities. For example, the Diocese of Knoxville in eastern Tennessee is a largely rural diocese that bears the face of the rural poor. The Hispanic population has more than doubled in the last few years and poverty dispropor-tionately affects this community. This weekend you will have the opportunity to support the Cath-olic Home Missions Appeal, which helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can sup-port this appeal.

SVDP Society Receives Rice

Bowl Grant Our St. Vincent de Paul Socie-ty has received a Catholic Re-lief Service Rice Bowl Grant of $1,000. Twenty-five percent of the diocesan Rice Bowl collec-tion is retained each year to fund these local grants. During Lent, Ss. Peter and Paul parishioners donated $1,742 to the Rice Bowl as part of Lenten almsgiving. Thank you for your generosity which helps those less fortu-nate in our own community and around the world.
