Joueurs de Bouies painted in 1908 by theImpressionist painter, Henri Matisse is in theHermitage in St Petersburg, Russia. It is of threeyoung men who are probably Matisse's sons andnephew, playing a game of Boules, the Frenchequivalent of Bowls. It is said that Matisse saw thegame as "a manifestation of man's creativity, andan instrument to use in understanding the codesof life." - a lofty ideal to which some members atour club might subscribe.

Bowling- The Sport of Kings

For several centuries, lawn bowling in England was onlyplayed by nobles and "others having manors or lands" asdecreed by Edward IIIin the rs" century. This restriction wasin effect until 1845 when it was repealed by Queen Victoria.

The history of bowling starts long before then. Illustrations ofpeople playing a game looking like bowls have been found onancient vases and plaques and some biased stone bowls from5,000 Be have been found. The Romans in Julius Caesar'stime played a game call Bocce and it is likely that they spreadthe game throughout Europe and Britain.

The game was flourishing in England in 1299 when theSouthampton Old Bowling Green Club was established. Thisclub is still active today. In the 14th Century, the game was soactive that it was banned in both Britain and France becausepeople were spending too much time on the game and notenough time practicing archery, which was necessary for theirdefense.

In 1588, Sir Francis Drake was reputed to have been playingbowls when warned of the approaching Spanish Armada. It issaid that he replied that there was plenty of time to finish thegame and still beat the Spaniards. There are those whodispute this anecdote but whether-it is true or not his ,~ame

, . has been immortalized on a brand of bowls,

lawn' bowling was probably introduced in America in the 17th

century although. archaeologists inWestem' Canadaunearthed bia'sed stone balls that appear to have been usedby North American Indians well before that.

The game has evolved into different forms as it waspopularized in different areas. In Italy, the game is calledBocce. It is played with balls that are spherical and have noinbuilt bias. They are made of metal or plastic. In France andSpain, they call the game Boules or Petanque. The ball isthrown rather than rolled. In Canada, they have adapted thegame for their winter weather and play curling on ice. InEngland, they also play a game they call crown bowling, which is played on the whole green with undulations similarto a golfcourse.

The game as we know it, is played in many parts of the worldincluding Australia, Cyprus,' New Zealand, South Africa, GreatBritain, etc. If you are interested' in travelling to other parts'of the worldto bowl, join Rayon his trip to Great Britain thisyear from Sept 3 to 16th
