Thank you for allowing St. John Vianney School the opportunity to provide your child with an exciting and challenging summer experience. Our mission is to teach your children and instill in them an appreciation of learning within a safe environment that allows students to grow both socially as well as intellectually.

Our dedicated faculty and staff look forward to working with you and your child. We will do our best to keep you informed of his/her progress, as we feel that close communication between home and school is of the utmost importance in education.

Complete a registration form for each student. Please register your child according to the grade he/she will be entering in the fall. Send the completed registration form and full tuition payment to:

Registration Deadline

Deadline for registration in the St. John Vianney Summer Program is June 12, 2015. Early registration is highly recommended as courses fill quickly.

Registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis. St. John Vianney School reserves the right to cancel a course if there is insufficient enrollment. Notification of a student’s class schedule will be mailed home soon after the application has been received.

Pick-Up/Drop Off

Parents are asked to follow the cones set up for morning drop off/pick-up. Enter through the church driveway and exit at the parish hall driveway. Our “one lane” drive-thru is set up to flow continuously. When dropping off/picking up your child, please continue to the end of the cones before stopping. Your child will be directed to your car following dismissal.

If you would like to walk on campus to pick-up your child, we ask that you park in the exit driveway on the right side next to the palm trees by our ELC parking signs.

Student Safety

Adult supervision will be provided between the hours of 7:45-8:00am and 11:30-11:45am. Students should not arrive on campus any earlier, unless enrolled in Before School Care. If your child is picked up late, he/she will be signed into After School Care. If a student is registered for only one class, he/she should not be dropped off any earlier than 10 minutes prior to the start of the class and should leave promptly after the class is finished. Loitering on campus will not be permitted. St. John Vianney School will not accept responsibility for unattended children before or after their scheduled classes.

CORE BLOCKS

Early Learning Center – 3&4 Year Olds 8:00 – 11:30AM(Must be 3 years old by September 30)

This is the perfect opportunity for our youngsters to acclimate themselves to the exciting adventure of learning! They will play games while learning, master following directions, practice important social skills while working in a group environment and get ready for their pre-kindergarten year.

Keikigarten 8:00 - 11:30AM (Must be 5 years old by September 30)

Designed for the student entering kindergarten, this program will help familiarize your child with life at St. John Vianney School. Children will learn to write their name using the upper and lower case letters. They will be introduced to the Spalding phonics program. Math, art and pre-reading skills will also be incorporated into the daily program.

Math - Grades 7 & 8 9:15– 11:30AM

This course will prepare students for Pre-Algebra and Algebra. Designed to reinforce and extend basic algebra skills and concepts, students will gain confidence in basic computation skills and problem solving. Organization of work and the process of mathematics will be stressed.

Robotics - Grades 4-8

Did you ever want to know exactly how a robot works? Well, here is your chance to find out! Build your own underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Learn all about ballasts, how to connect wires, manipulate control boxes and much more. At the end of the course, watch in amazement as you maneuver your ROV all over our big pool!

Go Ducks! – Grades 4-6

Everything you ever wanted to learn about the Oregon Ducks!Join us in this fun, exciting class as we explore the history of Oregon, its famous university and their fabulous football team, the University of Oregon Ducks! Students will integrate math and reading into the class while learning about the Ducks’ excellent football skills and game tactics, their history and what inspires them to be one of the country’s top college football teams. No wonder they have become one of Hawaii’s favorite college teams! End your summer school session with some cool Ducks swag!

Reading, Writing & Phonics - Grades 1-3

Students will be grouped according to their own reading level. Emphasis will be on comprehension, decoding, fluent oral reading, language, and

study skills. In addition, students will have opportunities to write about things that capture their interest, reinforcing the use of proper sentence structure using upper case and lower case letters, proper punctuation and grammar. We will also include vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, and phonics. The Spalding phonics program will be used. This class is strongly recommended for new students entering St. John Vianney in grades 1 and 2.

Summer Reading Challenge! - Grades 4-6

This course is designed to strengthen the reading of students to help prepare them for the middle school years. Read and be ready to learn with a fun and friendly competition. The more you read, the more rewards you earn! Students will also be able to select and test from reading material included in our Accelerated Reading Program.

Literature and Writing - Grades 7-8

This course is designed to strengthen the reading and writing skills of the middle school student. Take an in depth look at classic works of literature while working on honing your writing skills with a focus on analytical essays. This class will also allow students to explore their creativity through a mini unit on poetry.

Science is Fun! – Grades 1-3

Students will develop inquiry, and learn the process of the scientific method. The scientific method is the cornerstone to modern science. Without a formal method of determining questions and their answers, we wouldn't have science or the knowledge we have today. Be prepared to perform simple experiments, learn how an aquaponics system works and create an outdoor garden.

Fractions…Fractions…Lights! Camera! Action! - Grades 4-6

Learn everything you need to know about a fraction! Students will learn to recognize, add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. Students will also review core concepts such as long division and decimals.

Math Exploration - Grades 1-3

Students will explore mathematical concepts and their connections to each other. A strong focus will be given to addition and subtraction. Computational and mental arithmetic skills will also be reviewed.

Disney Glee - Grades 1-5

Learn to sing and perform your favorite Disney songs! Come learn songs from Frozen, The Lion King, Tangled, Peter Pan, The Princess and the Frog, and much more! We'll sing songs that the students pick, so come with suggestions and ideas for a fun performance! We will have a combined performance with the Pop Glee class after the last day of Summer School where students can show off and celebrate their hard work. Open to students of any experience level.

Let’s Play Ball!!!! Beginning

Let’s play ball!! This year we are proud to have retired major league catcher and Kailua’s own Dane Sardinha instruct our baseball program. Mr. Sardinha played professionally for 13 years. He was drafted in the second round of the 1997 major league baseball draft but chose to wait until the 2000 draft when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds. Throughout Mr. Sardinha’s long career he played with the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and ended with the Philadelphia Phillies in

2012. Dane and his brother Bully now own and operate the Pacesetter Baseball Strength and Fitness Program in Kailua. This four week program of expert instruction and competition skill work includes individual batting mechanics analysis, situational hitting, fielding, base-running (including sliding and stealing), pitching and catching (when applicable), circuit training and more.This class is designed for every type of player, whether you are looking to learn the basics, better your skills or looking to play at the next level.

Hoop It - Grades 1-3

Come “hoop it up” and learn basic skills and the concept of teamwork in the sport of basketball. This integrated course will use a variety of activities to teach fundamentals that will allow each student to experience game situations, with equal amounts of playing time. Boys and girls are welcome to join in the fun!

Introductory Spanish – Grades 4-8

Learn basic and conversational Spanish in this fun introductory class! Students will study beginning vocabulary and sentence structures as well as learn about Latin American cultures and customs.

Beginning Computer – Grades 2-5

Join us for an introductory class that focuses on basic keyboarding skills as well as learning the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Learn keyboarding, the foundation of all successful computer work. Students will gain practical keyboarding experience using Microsoft Word to create a personal portfolio. This will acquaint them with the basic features of a word processing program. They will also create fun, innovative projects which are age-appropriate and which will introduce to them the magical world of technology!

Paint the Town Wild – Grades 1-4

The essence of art and science is discovery. The artist/scientist will think, discover and make connections to better understand his world. This class is designed to bring an awareness to the Hawaiian concept of land division, ahupua’a, while working through a variety of modes of visual communication. Areas of study will introduce students to geology, the environment, science, animal science as well as matter.

Fun With Animals - Grades 1-4

This class will combine learning with hands-on fun as we explore the world of animals. It's an exciting curriculum integrating Math, Science, and Language Arts skills in a multi-age environment. We’ll also have guest speakers, a pet show, and lots of opportunities to find out more about our favorite wild and domesticated animals.

Ukulele - Grades 2-6

Enjoy the beats from the past in the music of yesterday and today. Learn ukulele chords, strums, and a variety of songs. Take part in playing an instrument known to our islands for so many years. A ukulele will be provided if needed.

Percussion Fundamentals: Beginning and Advanced – Grades 4-8

Learn the basics of percussion, or continue developing your percussion skills in this fun course. Whether you're just starting out or have been playing for years, this course will place percussionists in ensembles of varying skill levels. We will learn basic stick holds, rudiments such as a snare drum roll, mallet skills on the bells and xylophone, and play real percussion ensemble music as a group. Open to students of any experience level. This is a great way to get students ahead in band for next school year.

World History - 4-6

Travel the world by studying past civilizations! Learn about the history of the western and eastern hemispheres. We will be focusing on the history and cultures of China and Japan, as well as explore how European encounters impacted the indigenous peoples of the Americas, specifically those of Central America – the Incas and the Aztecs.

Pop Glee – Grades 4-8

Ever wanted to perform your favorite songs from the radio? Become a rock star? Then Pop Glee is for you! We'll be singing the songs that you choose and will perform them in a combined concert with the Disney Glee class after the last day of Summer School where students can celebrate and show off their hard work. Open to students of any experience level.

Intermediate Computer – Grades 4-8

Learn to use Prezi for exciting and engaging online presentations! We will spend time learning to create Glogs (an online poster that includes images, videos, audio and other interactive elements) as well as explore other presentation software. Students will also practice and hone their keyboard skills with an emphasis on improving speed and accuracy.

Science Through Inquiry 4-6

The scientific method is a way for scientists to study and learn things. It doesn't matter what the scientist is trying to learn, using the scientific method can help them come up with an answer. In this class students will build inquiry, enhance understanding of the scientific method and perform experiments. We will also explore an aquaponics, system and create an outdoor garden.

Creatively Clay – Grades 2-5

Fire up your imagination and join the fun in our clay building class. A unique place for students with love or interest in creating functional art in clay! Students expand their imaginations and explore the exciting world of clay through a wide range of projects and building techniques. Whether working with sculpture or claymation, students learn in a supportive, small class setting with plenty of individual instruction and inspiration. $10.00 lab fee

Become a Super Reader! - Grade 1-4

Explore the world of books in our library. Students will be challenged by the introduction of new vocabulary and exposure to a variety of literature genres. Our Accelerated Reader Program will be available for use in this class. Students will create vocabulary books to share with

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Refunds: If a student withdraws before the program starts, 75% of the fee will be refunded. There is no refund after the first week of school.

What to Bring: Students should bring a notebook and pen/pencil on the first day of school. They will be notified in each class what supplies will be needed.

What to Wear: Casual attire is acceptable, but if dress is deemed inappropriate, the parent will be contacted. Shoes or sandals with a back strap are required.

What to Eat: Children are encouraged to bring a light snack for break time. Soda, candy and gum are not acceptable for snack.

Absences: If your child will be absent, please call the school office before 8:00AM.

Tardiness: Students who are late must come to the office for a late slip before going to class.

Behavior: We expect good behavior from any student enrolled in our summer school. Parents will be contacted if there is a problem. Disciplinary problems may result in the student’s dismissal from our program without refund.

Visitors: Anyone who comes on campus, including parents, must obtain a visitor pass from the school office before going to a classroom.

Report Cards: Summer school progress reports will be sent home with the students on the last day of class.
