TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Take no revenge and cherish no grudge; love your neighbor as yourself. (Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18). Psalm — The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103). Second Reading — You are the temple of God, and holy (1 Corinthians 3:16-23). Gospel — Offer no resistance; love your enemies (Matthew 5:38-48). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna-tional Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

DIVINE WISDOM The Lord’s message, through Moses, was to “take no revenge and cherish no grudge . . . love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, “Great in theory, but not always realistic!” Then Jesus in today’s Gospel goes even further. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat en-emies the same as friends? Again, we’re tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the “real world.” Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Di-vine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest—without distinction. We must examine our wisdom and common sense to see how they compare to the wisdom of God, and make adjustments accordingly. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal is underway! The Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) helps our parish and the Diocese of Joliet to provide countless ministries, programs and ser-vices to support our friends and neighbors in immeasurable ways. Information about the 2017 CMAA and a request to make a pledge has been sent to all parishioners. Please review the materials, pray about how you can help further the minis-tries funded by our CMAA, and consider making the most generous gift possible. Our parish goal is $8,821.00. Help us to exceed this goal in paid pledges. Our parish will receive 70% of the amount over goal for use in our parish! Togeth-er, we can continue to spread the Gospel message in our Diocese through our ministries and help God hold us in His hands. Thank you in advance for your support.

Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House An Ignatian, Silent Retreat for Men February 24-26, 2017 What personal relationship could be more important than your relationship with God? For the good of the Church, as well as for the good of their own souls and the sake of their families, lay people are en-couraged to get away for a few days each year to rekindle their relationship with Christ. Retreats are a time away from our normal activities to spend time getting reacquainted with God, to examine the priori-ties of life, and to make concrete and practical resolutions for improvement. It is a time to renew – a time of reconcilia-tion and peace. You will be staying in a private room in a lovely 1920’s home with all meals included. There is a full schedule of spiritu-al talks and ample time for the Sacrament of Reconciliation; however, all are optional – you are free to set your own schedule. All are invited – parishioners, family members, friends – pass the word! For more information, visit www.jesuitretreat.org or contact Jerry Pasch at 815-955-0352, or email [email protected].

Re: Illinois House Bill 40 February 13, 2017 Brothers and Sisters, One of the noblest forms of witness that we Catholics give in our contemporary society is to stand up for the dignity of human beings as children of God. We feel a special commitment to the most vulnerable and the most innocent of all: children in the womb. Of course, unborn children depend primarily upon the care of their mothers. But legal protection is also important, something that has been lacking in the United States for over forty-four years. A bill has been introduced in the Illinois legislature—House Bill 40—which has two destructive purposes:

to thwart any future decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse or limit Roe vs. Wade; and

to allow for the use of public money to fund the taking of innocent human lives through abortion in the state’s Medi-caid and health insurance programs.

It is essential that people who believe in the protection of human life in the womb contact their proper state legislators and express their opposition to House Bill 40. You can find your state legislators by visiting www.ilcatholic.org and clicking on ‘Find Your Legislator’ or by calling the Catholic Conference at 312-368-1066 or 217-528-9200 and asking for help.

For additional thoughts on HB40, I invite you to read my op-ed which appeared in papers throughout the diocese at http://tinyurl.com/h8ssy32.
