“I believe in One God” ... the profession of our Catholic Faith continues in stating that this One God is a Trinity of Persons:

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. No explanation can give us an understanding of this “absolute mystery of faith”. We can, however, worship, adore and enter into this One-God-in-Three-Persons. Our existence has been within the mind and will of our God from all eternity. This One Triune God has loved us into existence; we are here today because of our God.

This Triune God has created us in His Image and Likeness, and we are all invited to live eternally with our God who has created us (Father), who has redeemed us (Son) and who sustains us in His love (Holy Spirit). As often as we bless ourselves with the Sign of the Cross, we call upon the Most Holy Name of our Triune God. We express our desire to enter into the company of our God. When we are baptized we are marked and immersed into the Life of our God. When we are confirmed, we are sealed and become the

complete possession of our gracious God. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation our God embraces us in forgiving love. In the Most Holy Eucharist we are drawn into communion with our God: Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity.

We have to live within our Triune God and without God everything is nothing. The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity follows the Feast of Pentecost which closed the season of Easter. God must be present to us in all times, in all places and in all people.

A book titled: The Practice of the Presence of God is the result of some conversations with Brother Lawrence (+1691). He was born Nicholas Herman, joined the army and finally entered the Discalced Carmelite Monastery in Paris, France. Then he was given the

religious name: Lawrence. Brother Lawrence lived constantly and continuously in the presence of God. No matter how ordinary a task he did, it always brought him into God’s presence. "It is enough for me to pick up but a straw from the ground for the love of God." Peeling potatoes was more essential for Brother Lawrence’s spiritual growth than attending the evening prayer service because Brother Lawrence recognized that God was there in the kitchen as much as he was in the chapel.

Like Brother Lawrence there are numerous saintly men, women and youth you sustained a lively ongoing relationship with God in prayer, community living and service to the needy. May this Feast of the Holy Trinity renew our response to God’s love for us, help us grow intentionally through prayer and the sacraments as visible and lively People of God. - Fr. Lance

Faith Formation

Our Bible Study Group meeting is on Thursday at 7 PM in the School Library. We are reading the Letter to the Ephesians. Paul reveals may remarkable gifts that we as Christians receive thru the Church. He shows how the Church is the body of Christ; it’s also a household, a mystery, a bride and an army. It tells how, when we are adopted fully into the family of God, we receive a great inheritance and how God’s great life can transform our daily lives. Come, LEARN MORE ABOUT CHIRST! DRAW CLOSER TO HIM! LIVE WITH HIM FOREVER!

RETURN - Our Children Back to the Church Would you like your child to come back to Jesus, in the Church He founded? We have a small group at our church, St. Virgil's,

dealing with this question. Perhaps you read about it in the Jan 18 Beacon? Everyone is welcome to visit our group, examining ways that could possibly help parents bring their loved ones back to the faith. We pray together, share our stories, and support each one’s efforts. We use a book entitled Return, How to Draw Your Children Back to the Church, which recommends steps a parent could take to encourage dialogue and create an environment in which parent and child are comfortable discussing matters of faith. Please, stop in to see if this approach makes sense in your life and offers you hope. Please call the St Virgil Church office, 973-538-1418, and join us on Thursday mornings at 11AM in the School Library.

Coins for Babies

With the success of the last four years’ campaigns (2017 exceeded $2,800) and the continued needs of expectant and new mothers, we will collect Coins for Babies again this year. Money collected is used to

purchase much-needed items for Birthright in Dover: diapers, diaper bags, baby wash, baby wipes, petroleum jelly, crib sheets, towels and face cloths. Items are supplied year-round on an as-needed basis.

Starting on Mother's Day weekend, May 12/13, baby bottles will be available at the church entrances. Please fill with your donation and return to St. Virgil's on Father's Day weekend, June 16/17, or to the parish office. Birthright relies solely on contributions from neighboring parishes and individuals. It has no corporate sponsorships or fund-raising campaigns. This is a great opportunity to teach young children the power of giving, even small coins.

Please keep these mothers and their babies in your prayers.

Weekly Reflections

SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY Matthew 28:16-20

Today’s Gospel tells us that when Christ’s Apostles were with him in the mountains of Galilee, He told them to go out to teach and, in so doing, revealed to them the Mystery of the Holy Trinity. That is, he told them to go out and baptize “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” In the Scriptures Christ often made reference to the three persons of the Trinity, but never so directly as there being three Persons in One God. For example, He prayed often to the Father. We have read that The Father in heaven proclaimed, “this is my beloved Son, hear Him,” and Christ Himself to have said “I will send you the Spirit of truth.” This Trinity is the example of God’s unity in love, such a love in which they are bound together, joined together, and yet still separate.

We try to grasp a fuller understanding of this Mystery, but in so doing realize that it is beyond our power of reasoning and understanding, except in a limited way. For example, St. Patrick used the example of a shamrock. Others have used such concepts as the triangle, the seed, or plant flowers as analogies, but they all are limited. We ourselves could reason, to get a small handle on the Mystery, that we can be a son or a daughter; and at the same time, a mechanic, a teacher, or a parent, or whatever vocation we might chose, and envision that if we were to stop being a mechanic or a teacher, etc., for example, we still would be the same person. But these are also small shadows of grasping the Trinity. We realize that these cannot be definitive examples or explanations of the Trinity, which is a deep concept beyond our limited abilities, and why we believe it as a principle of our Faith. We really would not want a God that we can understand completely. We really do want a God who is bigger than ourselves, one who can understand the big picture, while we ourselves can only see the small picture.

Christ has not gone into any esoteric explanation of this Mystery for us. But in revealing it, He does promise us that He will be with us ALWAYS! So, although we can’t comprehend all the answers, we are assured that we are not required to do so. For He tells us He is right here with us and will have the answers we need by our Faith in His love, for any issue we might come across.

A short prayer which might also help us in accepting the Trinity is:

Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place our trust in You; Immaculate Heart of Mary, intercede for us Holy Spirit, enlighten us; God the Father, protect us.

Thus, we place our trust in the Son, also joining the Blessed Mother to ask that she intercede for us, in our petition to Our Father and the Holy Spirit to enlighten us, and always be there with us, in our efforts to love and support one another in the journey of our life and faith.

Lord, bless us; for we need You!

EVANGELIZATION CORNER

The Holy Trinity is something most of us have difficulty getting our arms around. We do not have anything that can help us to capture the complete concept of the Holy Trinity. Yet, the Trinity is a cornerstone doctrine of the Catholic faith. We must accept by faith that God is one and yet exists as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

But you might ask how does it apply practically to our lives today and how does it apply to the mission of evangelization?

The Holy Trinity shapes the gospel; it is by believing in the Holy Trinity that the gospel becomes God’s message. It is only when we look at the historical activity of the triune God, as he reveals himself in his work of redemption, that we can really get at what it means for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to be one God and yet three loving, unified, and distinct persons.

The doctrine of the Holy Trinity shapes our understanding of our mission; it gives direction to our mission's ultimate goal; it illuminates the mission's way; and it clarifies the source from which the mission is derived in the first place.

God has given each of us a special calling. Although you may not have sensed God leading you to become a missionary or a preacher, you still have a calling! Have you listened for his voice? Have you heeded that call and followed his will obediently? He is calling you to be his witness.

The triune God loves lost people and He demonstrates his love by loving the unlovely and the unloving. He made us to love others as he loves us and asks us to faithfully speak of Him to those around us.

The most basic application of the Trinity doctrine to the goal of our mission is simply to bring non-believers into a personal relationship with God which precisely expresses the personal relationships within the eternal trinity.

The second goal is to bring believers into a diverse, loving, and mutually-honoring relationship with each other, which in itself reflects the inter-relationships within the trinity.

Third, the goal of the mission is ultimately to glorify God. If believers are to be perfectly happy, it is only to be by entering into a state similar to that of the perfectly blessed.

The Trinity also clarifies the means which are to be used in the pursuit of these goals; Redemption. Redemption is ultimately an accomplishment of the triune God; he alone is the doer of the work, and therefore, any human activity must flow from his prior activity, and be directed and empowered by him.

May His grace be with each of us as we continue on our journey with Jesus.
