THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 14, 2020
Fr. Del – Points to PonderOver the years, I have imagined what courses I would require that every student would have to take in their senior year of high school. Now, having been involved in education for a number of years, I also know that there is never enough time to include all of the courses that everybody thinks should be added, from their own perspective. Truth be known, the most practical course I took as a senior was Typing. At the time, I had no idea that I would use that skill the rest of my life, but I needed ¼ credit so that I could graduate! Never knowing that there would be an “Internet” one day, or that I would spend as many years as I did in school, the ability to type – or keyboard – was an invaluable way to fill a requirement so that I could graduate.
Skills are important, including the skill to reason and process thoughts. If I had enough persuasion to do so (I do not!), I would require students to take Formal Logic, Metaphysics, and Sociology. Ok, certainly I know this will never happen, but hear me out.
If there is any discipline that is lacking in our world today, it’s the ability to think through issues clearly and consistently. Formal Logic helps to assure that we are beginning with the proper premise, leading to a proper conclusion – and getting there in a reasonable way (with no undistributed middle terms). Feelings are valid, but they are not facts. Analyzing what the real problem is leads to having a pretty good shot that the conclusion is going to be not only valid, but helpful. Not every issue or concern that is characterized by “it’s just my opinion,” is valid, as though every opinion is correct. It’s got to be true, objective, valid.
I am not sure that it is easy to find a philosophy course, let alone Metaphysics, but it is vital for how we see reality. Metaphysics has to do with the things “beyond physics,” the nature of what is, the reality of what we cannot see. Imagination, in the best sense of the term, is rooted in the possibilities of going beyond what I can see, hear, touch, smell, etc. It is the belief that there is “something more” for which I desire or hope. Metaphysics guards against fundamentalism in all its forms.
It can be debated whether society is more complex than it was in the past, or whether we are simply more aware of the complexity today than we ever have been. Our senses are overwhelmed with information, and yet we are the loneliest people who have ever lived. How do we “read” people, understand true human longings, interpret how people “hear” in today’s world? If we do not know how people understand, we will not know what people most need to understand. Yes, that is complex.
Unless we have some sense about Formal Logic, Metaphysics, and Sociology, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is easily turned into something that it is not, or at least falls short of its profound meaning. The celebration of the Eucharist is central to our Catholic Faith, and Reception of Holy Communion is the action toward which the entire Mass is oriented. It is the Crucified Risen Lord that we receive when we come forward and affirm our belief with an “Amen.” The Lord we receive in the Sacrament is the most Real that Catholics understand, which goes far beyond a physical understanding of His presence.
I am suspicious of the study that many people cite, saying that only 80% of Catholics believe in the Real Presence – that Christ is truly present under the forms of bread and wine. Did the pollsters interpret the responses with an understanding of Logic, Metaphysics and Sociology? If not, the results could fail in communicating the truth because they fall into literalism, fundamentalism or physicalism. Huh? What I am saying is that a sacramental explanation uses categories that are more real, more sacred, more rooted in Mystery than we are used to. I wonder if the findings of the study were an analysis in physical terms, not sacramental terms. I have never met a Catholic who has said “It’s just bread, or just wine.” We may not know how to explain what we are receiving, except through the eyes of faith, but let’s also remember that “Mystery does not mean that we cannot say anything; Mystery means that we can never say enough.”
“ . . . unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.” That is what we believe, and I am sure you believe this, too. And let’s not forget that we, the Church, are the body of Christ, His members.
I hope this is food for thought. Don’t agree or disagree, think about it, pray about it. The reality is that my three courses will not be implemented in most academic programs. I still believe it is important, and I am still thankful that I took Typing. Even more, I am grateful for the nourishment we celebrate and receive each time we gather around the Altar of the Lord.

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 14, 2020
SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is scheduled on Sundays, either at Mass or at 12:30 p.m. Expectant parents should plan on attending the Baptismal Preparation Program, held six times a year. Call the Parish Office to schedule the Baptism and Preparation Program. The Sacrament of Baptism for adults and school age children is usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil, along with the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Preparation occurs in steps and stages throughout the year with weekly meetings on Sunday after 9:30 a.m. Mass. Call Emily Besl at 688-3143, or the Parish Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) is celebrated each Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or by appointment with the pastor. Seasonal Penance Services are also celebrated. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be scheduled by calling the pastor before a medical procedure, or in the event of a serious illness, or after each Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. When hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office; this is the only way we know if a parishioner has been hospitalized. In case of medical emergency or death, call the Parish Office and follow prompts.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT The Sacrament of Marriage is scheduled by calling the pastor or deacon to begin the process of marriage preparation, at least six months prior to the anticipated wedding date. A date for the wedding is set only after meeting with the pastor or deacon. Discernment for the Sacrament of Orders (ordination to the Priesthood and Diaconate) is facilitated by contacting the pastor or Vocation Director of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Those interested in pursuing Religious Life may also make these contacts.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Religious Education Program (R.E.P.) for children (ages 3 years through 8th Grade) begins each year in September and ends in May. Call Theresa Kearney, Coordinator of Children’s Faith Formation, or Barb Farwick, Administrative Assistant, at 688-3155 for more information.
