Reflecting on God’s Word
“Do whatever he tells you,” is what today’s Gospel pointedly
suggests (John 2:5). Perhaps too pointedly, because it just may turn
out that none of what he tells us seems appealing. Be that as it may,
life does serve up new wine.
Yet as always the question remains, how does anyone know
what we’re being told to do? How does one read the signs of per-
sonal times? A good marker, it would seem, is to pay attention to
one’s gifts. It may not be the only marker, but certainly one not to
be ignored. St. Paul writes to the Corinthians that our strengths and
talents come from the Spirit, and that each is given for some bene-
fit. Other translations say they are given for the common good,
which seems to be a better way of putting it, because it broadens
our view and prevents us from understanding any gift in terms of
personal benefit or preference. It may be that the old wine we just
drained did quench our personal thirst, but that the new wine is for
the common good.
So when the old wine runs out and we’re offered new wine,
it’s worth considering whether we’re being called to some new role
in life. It may be that life is ratcheting up our degree of participa-
tion, calling us to make some new contribution we have not even
considered. And we may be surprised. It may enrich the taste of life.
On this day, then, raise a toast to God’s new creation. To new
wine. The British say Cheers! The Germans, Prosit! Poles, Na
Zdrowie! In Spain, Salud! And Lithuanians, Sveikas! Believers,
well, they say Alleluia! —Rev. Joseph. J. Juknialis

Opium Wars, wreaking havoc on local culture and civili-
zation.
Shanghai Bazaar: Another place I enjoyed strolling
through was Shanghai Chenghuanmiao (Old City God
Temple), a popular scenic area and architecturally dis-
tinctive Bazaar, where I bought my ten-dollar watch,
which to this day I’m proudly wearing! I also bought a
fine looking bronze head of the Buddha, the price of
which I successfully bargained down from $600 to $70!
With the famous Taoism temple and the Yuyuan Garden,
this is a fascinating gem of a place.
Magnetic Levitation Train: After visiting a silk factory
and attending the famous Shanghai Acrobatic show, the
next day early in the morning we caught the impressive
Maglev (magnetic levitation) train at Longyang Road
Station to the Shanghai Pudong airport. This fastest train
with a top operational speed of 268 mile per hour was
built with German technology at a cost of $ 1.2 billion.
The distance of 18.1 miles is covered in 7 minutes and
20 seconds. In the first two minutes, the train picks up a
speed of 217 mph. During a non-commercial test run,
this train once reached a speed of 311 mph. The tourists
love to get on this levitating train---for bragging rights!
From Shanghai airport, we took a two-hour flight to Bei-
jing, from where we caught a 12-hour flight back to San
Francisco. Beijing airport is massive and magnificent
My general impressions of China: This most populated
nation on earth with 1.347 billion people (India’s popu-
lation: 1.21 billion; U.S.: 315 million; world population:
7.1 billion) boasts of thousands of years of history, cul-
ture, religion, and civilization. At the same time, there is
much modernity and dynamism that makes this nation
one of the most powerful and fastest-developing nations
in the world. Their greatest asset is the people. They
have millions of people at the service of nation-building.
Of course, there are major issues like the lack of freedom
of religion and expression. I feel one of the reasons they
are able to forge ahead in their development is their one-
party political structure. Democracy is a messy affair,
and they have not chosen to go through that process still.
However, the Chinese seem to have come up with a bril-
liant and shrewd blend of Capitalism and Communism. I
would recommend to you a trip to China to see this great
nation for yourself. I went with “China Focus,” a San
Francisco company that made our tour most enjoyable
and memorable.

Dear Parishioners, China Travel Notes---the Last Stop---From Guilin
to Shanghai: Up until I was interrupted by the beauti-
ful season of Christmas, I had been sharing with you,
for some weeks, my city-by-city experiences in China
during my visit there in October 2012. Now we are in
2013! How time flies! I wish to complete my trave-
logue in this bulletin. After my visits to Beijing (Great
Wall of China, Forbidden City, & Summer Palace),
Xian (Terracotta Warriors), Chengdu (Great Pandas),
Hong Kong (endless high-rise buildings, harbor & the
Big Buddha), and Guilin (Lijiang river cruise through
the most alluring landscape), we took a two-hour flight
to Shanghai, the most populated city in the world with
23 million people, a major global, financial center, the
busiest container port in the world, a center of culture,
fashion, commerce, media, tourism, and technology.
The word Shanghai means “above sea or on sea.” It is
a glamorous and unique city because of the blend of
ancient and modern cultures, and the mingling of the
oriental and western traditions. The Huangpu River
flows through downtown Shanghai, dividing the city
into the old Puxi and modern Pudong districts.
Skywalk on Oriental Pearl Tower: When you stroll
along the famous Bund, you can look across the river
at the impressive high-rise buildings in Pudong finan-
cial district. I had the pleasure of going up on the Ori-
ental Pearl Tower in Pudong, a signature tower like the
Transamerica Building in San Francisco. At 1535 feet
high, it has a distinctive structure with a huge ball to-
ward the base and another ball on top of the tower.
The top ball houses a skywalk. I had to fight my fears
off to walk on my first-ever skywalk. Some in my
travel group said they couldn’t muster the courage
because they said they would not like to “tempt fate”.
My friends Tina and Amy in the group, though hesi-
tant at first, followed my lead and really enjoyed the
skywalk. As you stand on the glass floor of the sky-
walk and look down, you see the manicured gardens
over a thousand feet below---and it is scary. You fear
that the glass floor might collapse and you would go
hurtling down to your death. It was a thrill I really en-
joyed, a strange combination of fear and joy. Now, I’m
ready to do the skywalk on the Grand Canyon over the
edge! The bottom section of the tower houses the
Shanghai Municipal History Museum, which focuses
on over 100 years of Shanghai history, from the Opi-
um War of 1842 to the present. I was impressed with
the sophistication and complexity of its presentation.
We got a sense of how the British East India Company
forced Shanghai to import the British opium (produced in British India), which set off the two

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A THINKING CATHOLIC
IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD?
Starting in Lent, the Archdiocese of San Francisco is offering a course designed to answer that very question. This

ing on Christ, the Church, and the foundation for a hope-filled life in our modern world.
Meeting weekly from 7:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. in locations throughout the Archdiocese, participants will gather to deep-
en their knowledge, share their lived faith and probe the questions that arise when adult Catholics grapple with the
awesome mysteries of God’s salvation.
To register, please fill out the form below and return it along with a check in the amount of $25.00, payable to the
Archdiocese of San Francisco. Please mail this registration form and your check to FORWARD IN FAITH, Archdio-
