Welcome New Parishioners! Our parish continues to be blessed and enriched
by the presence of new parishioners:
Matthew, Linnea and Ryder Coccellato
Brian, Danielle, Lucy & Eloise Krol
May St. Veronica Church become a spiritual home where your
faith and fellowship may be nourished with inspiration for you
to live a life of service and generosity toward God and others.
From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
Archdiocesan Annual Appeal (AAA): This week-
end we are starting the last week of the month-long
campaign for the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal. Our
goal is to raise $64,622. Last year, we had to raise
$49,500. This year it has gone up by about $15,000.
So please do donate at a higher level than you did
last year. We need to keep the vision in mind: Jesus
asks us to preach the good news and share his life
with others. The Archdiocese carries out that very
mission by reaching out to people at different levels
of life and needs. Understanding this basic vision of
the Archdiocese will help us toward generosity for
God’s work. So let us participate in AAA from the
perspective of faith and mission. Our parish benefits
directly from the different services that the Archdio-
cese provides. Our AAA donation to the Archdiocese
is directly connected with the spiritual, liturgical,
sacramental ministries and other services connected
with property, human resources, education, legal, etc.
that the Archdiocese provides for our parish. Last
weekend at all the Masses, Ron and Marie Derenzi,
our longtime and active parishioners, spoke encour-
aging everyone to participate as a way of sharing in
the life of the Archdiocese. I thank them for their
time and spirit of generosity. If everyone participates
soon, we will be able to complete this goal of
$64,622 within a month. Our parish has achieved this
goal in the past seven years. I am highly hopeful
we’ll be able to do the same this year as well.
Lent: We are moving along through the “desert” of
Lent. Jesus was in the desert for forty days. The peo-
ple of Israel were in the desert for forty years. So our
forty days of Lent is connected with those biblical
events. Jesus was tempted in the desert. He spent the
time in prayer and fasting. He was getting ready for
his public ministry during that time in the desert. He
had ahead of him an awesome mission of saving the
world from the clutches of evil and sin. The desert
experience was a perfect time of preparation for how
he will go about bringing us the new life through his
preaching, teaching, good works, healing, driving out
the demons, calling people to true meaning of reli-
gion, suffering, dying, and rising from the dead. The
Israelites in their desert experience were tempted and
strayed from God’s ways, but God encountered them
in various ways and helped them understand his love
for them and the promise of new life in “the land
flowing with milk and honey.” In light of these bibli-
cal events, our own Lenten days could be an occasion
for us to reassess our priorities, renew our relation-
ship with God, repent of our lack of love and com-
passion for others in words and deeds, and re-emerge
as a covenantal people sealed by the death and resur-
rection of Jesus, the Paschal mysteries at Easter.
Pope Francis’ Lenten Quotes: “Fasting makes
sense if it really chips away at our security and, as a
consequence, benefits someone else, if it helps us
cultivate the style of the good Samaritan, who bent
down to his brother in need and took care of him.”
“Although the life of a person is in a land full of
thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which
the good seed can grow. You have to trust God.”
“Each of us has a vision of good and of evil. We
have to encourage people to move towards what they
think is good ... Everyone has his own idea of good
and evil and must choose to follow the good and
fight evil as he conceives them. That would be
enough to make the world a better place.” “A little
bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more
just.” “Wretched are those who are vindictive and
spiteful.” “The confessional is not a torture chamber,
but the place in which the Lord's mercy motivates us
to do better.” “We all have the duty to do good.”
Word of God: In the first reading from Exodus, we
have a powerful story of God meeting Moses in the
burning bush. God reveals himself to Moses and calls
him to undertake the mission of releasing the Israel-
ites from oppression in Egypt. God’s presence is giv-
en to us; God reveals himself to us. The purpose is
for us to not only contemplate the mystery and love
of God but also to be sent to bring release for so
many who suffer from so many sad things in life.
There is an insight here: our love of God needs to be
translated into love of neighbor. To help those in
need is part of our faith.
Religious Humor: A Catholic man walks into a din-
er on the first Friday of Lent. He orders the fish plate.
After the meal is finished, he pays the bill, but leaves
no tip. He repeats this every Friday during Lent at the
same diner. On the last Friday of Lent, the waitress
finally asks the man, “Excuse me sir. You’ve been
eating here every Friday, and not once did you leave
me a tip. Didn’t I provide good service to you?” The
man replies, “The service you provided was excel-
lent. But because it’s Lent, I had to give up some-
thing. So, I decided to give up tipping.”

Reflecting on the Word
Third Sunday of Lent A cantor was practicing today’s psalm response with
her daughter: “The Lord is kind and merciful.” She
heard her daughter sing, “She Lord is kind of merciful.”
There is a big difference between being kind and merci-
ful, and kind of merciful. Which wording reflects your
experience of God?
Moses was in exile because he murdered an Egyp-
tian who abused a Hebrew slave. When he meets God in
a burning bush, God asks this murderer to lead the peo-
ple. Talk about mercy and a mercy that is constant, for
God is “I am who am,” that is, constant being.
The ever-living God took flesh in Jesus. The para-
ble about the fig tree is a statement about God’s desire to
save us. Through Jesus, the ever-living God cultivates us
and fertilizes us with mercy. When we repent, we reori-
ent our lives to live Jesus’ values and teaching. The
same God who asked a murderer to lead the Israelites
forgives and empowers us to bear fruit. Talk about mer-
cy!
The Corinthians thought they were better than any-
one else. But they were sinners like everyone else. Paul
advises them to learn from their ancestors who com-
plained in the desert; many of them were saved, though
not all. Some chose not to repent. Paul is the gardener
who offers the Corinthians another change to know God
as kind and merciful.
None of us is perfect. All of us need the gift of
God’s unconditional love and mercy. Turn to the Lord.
Learn from our ancestors. Repent. God is kind and mer-
ciful. Believe and live the kindness and mercy of God.
For prayerful consideration and discussion
When have you experienced God’s kindness and
mercy in your life?
How can you share that love and mercy in ways
that help others know God’s forgiveness?
Living and Praying with the Word
God of our Lord Jesus Christ, open my eyes to
see you in my life today, and open my heart to re-
pent so that all may know your love and mercy this
Lent. Amen. - from Living the Word
