Stewardship Reflections: That in gratitude for our gifts, we may grow them and give back with increase. “Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid?” - Romans 11:35 St. Paul reminds us of a central fact of stewardship. We cannot give the Lord anything, because God already owns it all. God made everything. All that we can do is return a por-tion of God’s many gifts back to Him. No podemos darle nada al Señor, porque Dios ya lo posee todo. Dios lo hizo todo. Todo lo que po-demos hacer es devolverle una porción de muchos de los dones de Dios. ¡La gratitud sincera por nuestros dones abre nues-tros corazones a la generosidad gozosa!

Saint Francis of Assisi is often attributed (incorrectly?) with the expression “Preach always and if necessary use words.” Last week’s gospel reminded us that words are important if we are to be a reconciling community. In to-day’s gospel Jesus again speaks about the importance of words when He responds to Peter’s question about how many times must one forgive another person. Forgiving three times was considered enough in Jesus’ day, so Peter adds a few more times just in case Jesus might be more demanding. Peter asks Jesus in today’s gospel, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as 7 times.” Jesus responds that as a reconciling community one forgives “not 7 times, but seventy-seven times. Forgiving without limit. What a gospel challenge for us disciples!! But then again, how many times do we want God to forgive us? Three times only? If so, some of us might have reached our limit of God’s forgiveness. Seven times? Again if true, more of us might have reached God’s forgiveness limit. I think that most of us are excited that we have a God of unlimited forgiveness. If God shares His divine nature with us in baptism and Christ changes us into Himself through our reception of the Eucharist, how are we doing in the forgiveness business? Have we at-tained the ability to forgive seventy-seven times? Today the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday. We thank our catechists for their service to our faith community. But we are all students and all catechists when it comes to for-giveness. We are learners and teachers of mercy and for-giveness. I share with you some of Pope Francis’ words concerning mercy in his declaration for the Jubilee Year of Mercy: Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith…. When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of mercy. Mercy will always be greater than any sin, and no one can place limits on the love of God who is ever ready to forgive….. We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace… In short, the mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality through which he reveals his love as that of a father or a mother, moved to the very depths out of love for their child. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that this is a “visceral” love. It gushes forth from the depths naturally, full of tenderness and compassion, indulgence and mercy. We are called to learn about his mercy as students and to teach this type of mercy as catechists.

San Francisco de Asís es a menudo atribuido (incorrectamente?) con la expresión "Predicar siempre y si es necesario utilizar palabras". El evangelio de la semana pasada nos recordó que las palabras son importantes si queremos ser una comunidad reconciliadora. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús vuelve a hablar de la importancia de las palabras cuando Él responde a la pregunta de Pedro acerca de cuántas veces debe uno perdonar a otra persona. Perdonar tres veces fue considerado suficiente en los días de Jesús, por lo que Pedro agrega unas cuantas veces más en caso de que Jesús pudiera ser más exigente. Pedro le pregunta a Jesús en el evangelio de hoy: Si mi hermano me ofende, ¿cuántas veces tengo que perdonarlo? ¿Hasta siete veces?" Jesús responde que como una comunidad reconciliadora nosotros perdonamos: "No sólo hasta siete, sino hasta setenta y siete veces". Perdonar sin límite. ¡Qué desafío evangélico para nosotros discípulos !! Pero, ¿cuántas veces queremos que Dios nos perdone? ¿Sólo tres veces? Si es así, algunos de nosotros podríamos haber alcanzado nuestro límite del perdón de Dios." ¿Siete veces? Una vez más, si es cierto, más de nosotros podríamos haber alcanzado el límite del perdón de Dios. Creo que la mayoría de nosotros estamos emocionados de que tengamos un Dios de perdón ilimitado. Si Dios comparte Su naturaleza divina con nosotros en el bautismo y Cristo nos transforma en Sí mismo a través de nuestra recepción de la Eucaristía, ¿cómo estamos haciendo en el negocio del perdón? ¿Hemos alcanzado la capacidad de perdonar setenta y siete veces? Hoy la Iglesia celebra el domingo catequético. Damos gracias a nuestros catequistas por su servicio a nuestra comunidad de fe. Pero todos somos estudiantes y todos catequistas cuando se trata de perdonar. Somos aprendices y maestros de misericordia y perdón. Comparto con ustedes algunas de las palabras del Papa Francisco relativas a la misericordia en su declaración para el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia Jesucristo es el rostro de la misericordia del Padre. El misterio de la fe cristiana parece encontrar su síntesis en esta palabra…. Ante la gravedad del pecado, Dios responde con la plenitud del perdón. La misericordia siempre será más grande que cualquier pecado y nadie podrá poner un límite al amor de Dios que perdona… Siempre tenemos necesidad de contemplar el misterio de la misericordia. Es fuente de alegría, de serenidad y de paz…. Así pues, la misericordia de Dios no es una idea abstracta, sino una realidad concreta con la cual Él revela su amor, que es como el de un padre o una madre que se conmueven en lo más profundo de sus entrañas por el propio hijo. Vale decir que se trata realmente de un amor “visceral”. Proviene desde lo más íntimo como un sentimiento profundo, natural, hecho de ternura y compasión, de indulgencia y de perdón. Estamos llamados a aprender acerca de su misericordia como estudiantes y a enseñar este tipo de misericordia como catequistas.
