A Message From Our Pastor Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week
BOOKS – BEING CATHOLIC A School of Prayer: The Saints Show Us How to Pray
I often joyfully reflect on the fact that I am a priest in the Diocese of Victoria in Texas. My joy stems from the fact that we are a rural diocese with down home, family centered folks who are not far from the earth and whose fingernails seem always to have dirt under them. I love our rural life. Many of the people of the diocese are farmers and many more are gardeners. We are a people who personally realize humanity’s dependence on God. For without Him, our fields would remain nothing but dirt and weeds. These days in particular are dirty days being that we are in the midst of harvest. We are reaping what we sewed months ago and worked hard to aid the plants’ growth. As you harvest your crop remember to offer thanks and praise to God. I offer you a harvest prayer and encourage you to attend the Harvest Mass the bishop will celebrate to end the harvest season. The Mass will be Nov. 20 at 10:00 a.m.at the Whistling Duck Vineyards and Winery in Weimar.
A Harvest Prayer Almighty Lord God, You keep on giving abundance to men in the dew of heaven, and food out of the richness of the soil. We give thanks to Your most gracious majesty for the fruits of the field which we have gathered. We beg of You, in Your mercy, to bless our harvest, which we have received from Your generosity. Preserve it, and keep it from all harm. Grant, too, that all those whose desires You have filled with these good things may be happy in Your protec-tion. May they praise Your mercies forever, and make use of the good things that do not last in such a way that they may not lose those goods that are everlasting, through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs to the king-dom? - James 2:5

Questions for Discussion: Adult: When has your faith in Jesus enabled you to speak out on an issue of importance? Child: What does your belief in Jesus mean to you?

Bishop Gary W. Janak to celebrate 1100th Anniversary of St. Ludmila’s Martydom at Sts Cyril and Methodius Church in Shiner...
This event will begin with a Mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Gary W. Janak, newly appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 16, 2021, in Saints Cyril and Metho-dius Church in Shiner. The Mass will be followed by a luncheon at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The Czech Choir will provide the music for the Mass. St. Ludmila was the first Christian martyred in Bohemia and along with her grandson St. Vaclav (Wenceslaus) were the first to be celebrated as saints by Slavic Christians. St. Ludmila and her husband Bořivoj were reportedly baptized by St. Methodius sometime prior to his death in 885 A.D. This event is being sponsored by the newly founded Czech Catholic Foundation of Texas with the Shiner KJZT and KJT providing the preparation of the noon meal. Those planning to attend the luncheon are asked to call (832) 437-4077 or email [email protected] to provide a count for food preparation.purposes.

FIRST READING - Isaiah 50:4-9 The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us appear to-gether. Who disputes my right? Let that man confront me. See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong?
SECOND READING - James 2:14-18 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, ” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, “You have faith and I have works.” Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
GOSPEL – Mark 8:27-35 Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philip-pi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.” Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.”
