Pentecost! Often called the “birthday of the Church” since it was on Pentecost that the Holy Spirit came down upon the members of the early Church, the Apostles and our Blessed Mother, and after filling them with the gifts of the Spirit, sending them out to bring the Gospel to the world. The official work of the Church began. Some 3,000 people were baptized on that day after St. Peter’s teaching.

Our own “Pentecost” experience is best understood in our reception of the sacrament of Confirmation. In that sacrament, we receive the fullness of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and are given the seven gifts that we are called to use throughout our faith journey on Earth in order to facilitate our movement towards our heavenly home.

It is important to remember, as St. Paul tells us, all gifts we are given are for the good of the whole body of Christ, not just for personal satisfaction. Thus after the first Pentecost, the Spirit filled Apostles went forth throughout the world to bring the good news. And in our own lives, we are called to use that same Holy Spirit and the gifts we have received to not only strengthen us on our faith journey, but to also be an instrument helping those around us to hopefully better know,

love and serve the Lord in this world and to be with Him forever in the next.

So, Happy Birthday. May that which started nearly 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem, be a source of joyous celebration in your home, your family and friends and your own heart this day. God bless you on this day!

Watch Mass on Facebook and YouTube!

Throughout our readings today, we see the amazing truth that the Holy Spirit gives us gifts and guidance in a very personal way. We are meant to use these gifts to build up the Body of Christ in a way that is unique to each one of us.

Our first reading, from the Acts of the Apostles, recalls the dramatic moment when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the apostles. “Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”

Notice how personal and individual is this outpouring of the Spirit. This personalized way of “gifting” the apostles allowed them each to reach different people, sharing with them the “mighty acts of God.” Embracing the stewardship way of life means that we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in the best use of the unique gifts He has given to each of us, to accomplish the particular mission entrusted to us.

Jesus gives us this mission in our Gospel passage from John. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” But we must not let this responsibility overwhelm us. Jesus Himself, tells us so — “Peace be with you.”

As this Easter season comes to a close, let us be at peace. And let us resolve to lean on the Holy Spirit more and more as our guide through the stewardship way of life.

For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.

St. Therese of Lisieux

In these trying time, it is now more important than ever that we find refuge in Christ through prayer. Without prayer, we cannot lead a virtuous life.

Prayer does not need to be complicated. No one is truly "bad at prayer." Even a simple "Jesus, I don't know how to pray" is a prayer in itself that pleases our Lord.

At St. Thomas More, there are many beautiful spots where anyone can come and pray safely both within the church walls and outdoors.

We encourage you during this time to come and join us, lifting your hearts to Christ.

we lift up our heartsplaces for prayer on the stm campus

Devotional Cove

Prayer is the key that opens the heart to God. St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Located in the Narthex across from the Parish Library, the Devotional Cove allows visitors to bring their intentions to Christ in candlelight. The pictures of saints, whose relics are at STM, line walls reminding us that the angels and saints are praying for us too. Open Monday–Friday from 10:00am–7:00pm.

Adoration Chapel

There is nothing so great as the Eucharist. If God had something more precious, He would have given it to us.

St. John Vianney

The STM community has a deep devotion to the Eucharist through perpetual adoration. He who loves us so much desires to see us in adoration. See page 4 for hours.

St. Francis Garden

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

St. Francis of Assisi

Situated behind STM Catholic School near the sports field, the St. Francis Garden is a wonderful place to ponder the beauty of God's creation. On a clear day, the entire range can be viewed allowing the heart to surge with gratitude at what the Lord has made.

Memorial Garden

Prayer is the root, the fountain, the mother of a thousand blessings.

St. John Chrysostom

The Memorial Garden outside the Adoration Chapel is in remembrance of those who never had a chance at an earthly life. The steady stream of the water fountain is a peaceful sound that allows the cares of the world to fade away.

Ten Commandments

We cannot underestimate the power of prayer and the difference it will make in our world.

St. Teresa of Calcutta

In between the parish and school buildings is the Ten Commandments, a beautiful place to find rest and solitude from the worries of this world.

St. Michael Statue

O glorious prince St. Michael... enable us by your gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day.

This depiction of the guardian of souls is outside the parish rectory. When temptation and hopelessness looms, we can visit our friend, St. Michael and ask for his protection, whose power is given by God.
