The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story.

A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was bap-tized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning Decem-ber 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.

Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own lan-guage and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared.

Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan’s un-cle became seriously ill. This led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bish-op in his cape or tilma.

On December 12, when Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the tilma where the roses had been appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac.

We will honor our Lady of Guadalupe here at St. Thomas on December 12:

Las Posadas commemorates the journey that Jo-seph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethle-hem in search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus. We will have posadas here at St. Thomas Aquinas December 15 thru December 21 each day at 7pm.

Gospel: Mt 3:1-12

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all

flesh shall see the salvation of God. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

R. Aleluya, aleluya.

R. Aleluya.

John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the de-sert of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the king-dom of heaven is at hand!" It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were go-ing out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. When he saw many of the Pharisees and Saddu-cees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his san-dals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat in-to his barn, but the chaff he will burn with un-quenchable fire."
