Christmas 2016
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is a great privilege for me to greet you on this first Christmas as your bishop. I am so very grateful for the gracious welcome you have extended to me and for the assurance of your continued prayers. At Christmas, we sing “Joy to the World.” However, this is more than a seasonal carol. It is the hope and prayer that we hold deep within our hearts Genuine and lasting joy is founed only in an intimate relationship with Jesus, the Son of God, the Son of Mary, the Savior of the World. As we celebrate the great feast of Christmas, may we be renewed in our commitments to stay close to the Lord by faithfully attending Mass, by frequently celebrating God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Penance, by praying daily and by imitating the Lord’s humble and sacrificial service especially in our compassionate care of those in most need. When we live in such a way, we will know genuine joy and will be instruments in bringing that precious gift to all the world. It is my hope and prayer that through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, our Lord Jesus will abundantly bless you with His peace and joy throughout the Christmas season and always. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge Bishop of Arlington

Dear Parishioners, First and foremost, I want to wish you and your families a most blessed Christmas season! May the spirit of this season fill your hearts and homes with the abiding love of God. As we contemplate the holy family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, may our own families be inspired to live the love of Christ each and every day. On a more businesslike note, I understand that the Loudoun County School Board is scheduled to vote on a change to its Nondiscrimination Policy at its next meeting, January 10, 2017. The board is considering a change to the policy to include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity." You should be aware that this includes potential implications for restroom and locker room usage as well as athletic team membership. Our Holy Father has reminded us that "it is one thing to be understanding of hu-man weakness and the complexities of life, and another to accept ideolo-gies that attempt to sunder what are inseparable aspects of reali-ty." (Amorim laetitia, #56) I would like to encourage you to urge the board members to protect the privacy rights of all school children and vote "no" on the proposed change to the nondiscrimination policy. You may email the entire board ([email protected]), or contact them individually (visit http://www.lcps.org/Page/1629). A sample letter is available on the parish website. You may sign up to speak at the meeting by calling 571-252-1020, or emailing [email protected]. Whether you wish to speak or not, I would encourage you to attend the meeting is support of the privacy rights of our children. Let us together pray for the members of our school board and for our children. May God bless you!

Parish Happenings
The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) Today's readings are as familiar to most of us as the carols we sing and the commercials that overwhelm this holiday season. Often Christmas finds us tired, struggling with preparations and expectations. What we really want to feel is joy and peace. The stress of preparation, of waiting, is reflected in both Isaiah and Paul's letter to Titus. Luke tells us of the exhaustion that Mary and Joseph felt: a young pregnant wife and her husband, forced to travel just as she is about to give birth, unable even to find a room to stay in. It must have been miserable. They must have been afraid. In the midst of this exhaustion, misery, and fear, a child is born, a Son is given. The world is then filled with light and hope, joy and peace. In that moment they, and we, know what all the waiting has been for.
Office Hours Monday & Wednesday: 10am-7:30pm Tuesday: 10am-6pm Thursday: 9am-4pm Fridays: 9am-Noon Mandatory First Communion Parents’ Meeting All parents of students receiving their First Communion this spring, must attend the meeting on Tuesday, Janu-ary 10th, 7:30pm. Starts in the school cafete-ria with snacks and games, then moves to the Upper Room (the choir loft of the church) for prayer and dis-cussion of a Gospel passage lead by peer-mentors. Concludes with a talk by an adult leader, closing prayer, and Pizza and dessert! There is usually a priest available for confession! Treasures From Our Tradition An old joke asks, "What time is Mid-night Mass?" The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of "midnight" predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it
was not possible to receive Commun-ion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as "The Shepherds' Mass," and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus' birth to focus on the key to the day's celebra-tion: John the Evangelist's majestic theology of Christ's identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. On-
ly monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and cele-brate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season. You still have two weeks to send those Christmas cards before you're officially late! --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
