DETERMINATION OF LIQUID LIMIT OF SOIL

Experiment No: Date:

Objective :

To determine the Liquid limit of the given soil sample, by using Casagrande type

Liquid limit apparatus Method.

Theoretical Background :

Liquid limit is the water content corresponding to the arbitrary limit between liquid

and plastic state of Consistency of a soil. It is defined as the maximum water content

at which a part of the soil cut by groove of standard dimension will flow together from

a distance of 2 mm under an impact of 25 blows in the device.

Apparatus (or) Equipments Required:

Casagrande liquid limit device consisting of a brass cup

Grooving tool

Evaporating dish

Balance for weighing

Spatula

Wash bottle

Procedure :

1. Take 1000 g of soil sample which passes through 425 micron sieve and desired Quantity of water.

2. Mix the soil with water thoroughly and place the mixed paste in Casagrande liquid limit device almost half filled and level it with the help of spatula.

3. A grooving tool is used to cut the middle of soil in the cup

4. Turn the handle of the apparatus at the rate of 2 revolution per second, Continue until the two parts of the soil come in contact with the bottom of the groove along a distance of 10mm.

5. Record the number of blows required to cause the groove to close for approximately a length of 10mm.

6. Continue the above process in varying water content added.

7. The result of the test is plotted in graph corresponding to water content and Number of blows. From the graph the water content corresponding to 25 blows will give the liquid limit of the sample.
