FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners, As I write these words, I just attended a presentation by a theology professor from Korea, who cited an old saying that I had never heard before. The quote was, ―The church is the only club in the world that exists solely for the benefit of its non-members.‖ The point of the quote (and of the lecture) was that the church of Jesus exists, primarily and paradoxically, for those outside that church. To use a trendy term, the church is, first and foremost, missional. Human nature being self-serving and self-seeking, our instinct is to settle for a ―3B‖ church: (1) a church that has a (nice) building; (2) a church that has baptisms (people keep affiliating with it); and (3) a church that has a budget (without severe monetary issues). In such a church, we feel comfortable worshipping God, experi-encing fellowship and learning religious truths. In the Profession of Faith we recite at Mass, we say that the church is apos-tolic (a word that means ―sent forth‖). This not only indicates an authority dating back to the time of Peter, but a spirit of service that engages non-members. We are not merely a congregation navel-gazing, but a whole people of God looking outward to bring the whole gospel to the whole world. Some of the most ―missional‖ Catholics here at St. Raphael’s are those who work at or actively support our Food Pantry. This is an outreach impacting the food-insecure of the neighborhood, not an ―inreach‖ with primary benefit to registered pa-rishioners. As the Pantry takes its annual summer break at this time, we salute all its vol-unteers and benefactors for living out the mandate of Jesus, ―As the Father sent me, so I send you.‖ -Father Jerry Jecewiz

2. Until Labor Day, the rectory office will close on Fridays at 2:00 pm. 3. Our Food Pantry will have its annual summer closing the last two weeks of July and the first two

weeks of August.

3. Catholic Charities has outpatient behavioral health clinics, to deal

with crisis and trauma therapy and to offer individual, group and

family counseling. The nearest branch is in Jackson Heights.

tions for the TACHS preparation program starting on Sept. 10th

Rome and Assisi (Sept. 15-23) and (optional extension) the Holy

SIGN UP NOW FOR RELIGIOUS ED. CLASSES STARTING IN SEPTEMBER

All returning students must register using the PINK registration form available in the rectory if you lost it. Stop by the rectory during weekday office hours to reregister. New Students need to fill out a PINK registration form (available in the rectory), attach a COPY of the child’s BAPTISM Certificate and pay the registration fee ($75 for 1 child; $100 for 2 children of same parent; $110 for 3 or more children). If the child is not baptized, you need to send a COPY of their Birth Certificate. Sr. Christine will need to meet NEW families. She will be in touch with you to ar-range this appointment, usually on Wednesday or Thursday from 2pm on.

Estimados padres de familia Un nuevo año escolar ha comenzado. Espero que hayan tenido tiempo para relajarse y renovarse. Es tiempo para inscribirse para las clases de CCD aquí en San Rafael. Todos los estudiantes que regresan sólo tiene que llenar un formulario de inscripción y pagar la cuota. Los honorarios son $75 para 1 niño, $100 para 2 niños y $ 110 para 3 niños. Un formulario de inscripción adjunto. Usted puede enviar por correo, poner en la colecta del domingo o venir a la rectoría de lunes a viernes entre las 9:00 AM y 4:00 PM para inscribirse en el nuevo año. 22 de julio: Fiesta de Santa Maria Magdalena Qué dice la Biblia sobre María Magdalena: –Jesús sacó fuera de ella 7 demonios (Luchas 8:2) –Ella estaba presente cuando crucificaron a Jesús (Mateo 27:32-56) –Ella estuvo presente cuando sepultaron a Jesús (Mateo 27:57-61) –Ella, con otras dos mujeres, fueron para ungir al cuerpo de Jesús (Marcos 16:1) – Ella fue la primera persona que vio a Jesús en su cuerpo resucitado (Juan 20:10-18). Estas son las referencias estrictamente bíblicas sobre Maria Magdalena. Entonces cómo se originó la falsa historia de afirmar que ella era una prostituta: 1- Ya que el nombre de María Magdalena aparece inmediatamente después del pasaje bíblico donde se habla de una prostituta, algunos piensan que se trata de la misma mujer (Lea Lucas 7:36 a 8:2). No existe ninguna base bíblica para decir que se trata de la misma mujer. 2- “La mayoría de los historiadores concuerdan en que la referencia a María Magdalena como prostituta la empezó el papa Gregorio I en el siglo sexto.‖ Fue la manipulación y el antojo de un papa que decidió que la mujer pecadora que aparece en Lucas 7:36 y la mujer que aparece Lucas 8:2 son las misma persona. La Biblia no dice eso. 3- Otros han sostenido que Maria Magdalena es la mujer anónima sorprendida en adulterio. 4- Otros estudiosos sostienen que ella debió haber sido prostituta porque venía de Magdala, localidad que se asociaba con la prostitución. Como podemos ver todas las asociaciones que se le hace a Maria Magdalena como una prostituta carecen de base bíblica e histórica.
