A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESKMrs Michelle Cairelli

This week saw the fulfilment of a dream that our Executive Principal Graeme Irwin has had for some time. He has long been interested in creating an opportunity to invest into the young leaders within our school communities. Student leaders from all of our schools gathered together at the inaugural SPCC student leadership symposium, which was hosted at the beautiful Harbourview rooms in Newcastle.

It was a joy to join with our prefects and house captains for this event and our Gosford students certainly did us proud, as did all the students from all of the SPCC schools. The keynote speakers were Kathryn Taylor, who is a professional strengths coach, Ashley Fell from McCrindle Research and Kieran Bridger from Alphacrucis. All the Principals and Heads of School had a two minute opportunity each to share one of their leadership pearls of wisdom and our students had question time opportunities in small groups with Senior leaders.

The feedback from our students on the bus trip home was very positive. They said they learned a lot about leadership, were very inspired and as well as the keynote speakers, they really appreciated the opportunity to connect with the student leaders from other campuses.

I would also like to congratulate our School Captain, Kate for winning third place in the Wild Fig Awards. More details on page 15 of this newsletter.

Finally I would like to remind you all of our Think Tank on Wednesday 22 November at 7:00pm in the College Library. All welcome - more details overleaf!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL CHAPLAINMr Geoff Brown

Someone once said: “the good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.” I like that; it’s a great reminder. In the book of Acts, Luke summarized Jesus’ earthly ministry by saying that He “went about doing good” (10:38).

Everybody’s busy these days - it’s just a fact of life. Between our careers, families, church activities and other social responsibilities, there’s never a shortage of something that we could (or should) be doing. All of the above things are important. But is all that busyness hindering our ability to serve Christ?

I heard about an experiment conducted on a seminary campus. Three different groups of students were each given a different task: [The professor] gave the first group envelopes telling them to proceed immediately across campus to the Hall. He told them that they had 15 minutes and if they didn’t arrive on time, it would affect their grade. A minute or two later, he handed out envelopes to five others. They were also to go over to the Hall, but they had 45 minutes. The third group had three hours to get to the Hall. The students

weren’t aware of it, but the professor had arranged for three drama students to meet them along the way. Close to the beginning of their walk, one of the drama students had his hands on his head and was moaning aloud as if in great pain. About half way to the Hall, on the steps of the chapel, the seminary students passed a man who was lying face down as if unconscious. Finally, on the steps of the Hall, the third drama student was acting out a seizure. In the first group of students, those who had only 15 minutes to get across campus, no one stopped to help. In the second group, two students stopped to help. In the last group, the one that had three hours for their assignment, all of the students stopped to help at least one person. The professor had clearly shown these seminarians that hurry hinders ministry.

Would you have stopped to help any of those people if you were in a hurry? In the busyness of our everyday lives, let’s make sure we aren’t passing by opportunities to serve others and reflect Christ to the world.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLMrs Helen Finlay

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10

I cannot express in words how grateful we are to the many parents, grandparents and friends who regularly give up their time to help the school run smoothly and free up the time of the teachers so they can do what they do best…teach!

As the end of the school year draws close once again, one of my favourite events of the year is due to take place and that is the Volunteers High Tea. I look forward to honouring those volunteers who are able to attend on Wednesday and to those who are not, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for your service to the College this year.

On Thursday I was able to honour one of our very special volunteers Mrs Leta Best. Leta is a grandparent at the school and a former teacher. Leta has been coming in all year on a voluntary basis and running a literacy intervention group four times a week. The students she teaches have benefitted amazingly from her expertise and she has become a very loved member of our College community.

I look forward to celebrating the students achievements with you all at our Presentation Morning on Wednesday the 29th of November. Please rest assured that even though the term is drawing to a close it will be “business as usual” in our classrooms with students engaging in rich learning tasks in the final weeks.

On Friday we paused as a Middle School to commemorate the fallen, and the families of the fallen, during our emotional Remembrance Day Service.

We remembered the sacrifice – the ultimate sacrifice - of those who served and protected us, our way of life, freedoms and rights. In particular, we are especially grateful of our right to freedom of worship.

We remember that Christ also served us and died for our sins. His life was paid as a ransom for our sins:

“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20:28 New International Version (NIV)

STAGe 3 exCurSiOn TO The SYDneY OBServATOrYStage 3 has been studying God’s glorious creation of the Solar System in Term 4. On Monday, we were blessed with beautiful weather as we visited the Sydney Observatory in Millers Point, Sydney. We were in awe sitting in the Planetarium, looked through a telescope to see the red sun, and used some amazing apps on iPads to investigate the orbits of planets in the Solar System. Our guides were intrigued by the depth of knowledge of the students. While waiting for our tours, we walked across the Harbour Bridge, which was a first for many students. Overall, we had an amazing excursion and the students appeared to enjoy the change of scenery!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOLMr Cameron Johnston

rememBrAnCe DAYLast week in Senior School Assembly I shared with the students an important event that was to be taking place last weekend. Remembrance Day 2017 would mark the 99th Anniversary of the guns on the Western Front in World War I fell silent and the peace settlement accepted. It is thought that between nine and thirteen million people lost their lives due to the war, and while we do not celebrate the war, we do need to remember those that have gone before us and have made the ultimate sacrifice.

I shared the story of one of the many soldiers who went to the war, Corporal Ernest Corey who was born in Cooma in 1892. He served in both world wars as a stretcher bearer and is the only commonwealth soldier to have been awarded the Military Medal four times – each one of them was received for saving life and not taking it.

I challenged the students with what is important to remember in life and how in fact they themselves would like to be remembered. May we never forget their sacrifice but may we always remember to emulate their act of service to others.

STuDenT leADerShip DevelOpmenTOn Thursday the Senior School House Captains and Prefects and College Captains all made history in attending the first ever St Philip’s Christian College Student Leaders Symposium at Newcastle’s Harbourview Function Centre. As a part of developing our future leaders they heard from some guest speakers who helped the students to understand their strengths, learned more about the demographic environment in which they are leading, and also the significance of sharing their story with those that they lead in order

to build relationship. It was a very helpful day in which our Senior School leaders were blessed and encouraged to go out and serve those that they intend to lead over the next year in their roles.

miSSiOnThe Year 12 Schoolies Alternative Trip to Vanuatu is underway and from all reports the students are having an amazing time. Please keep them in your prayers. Similarly, the students in Year 10 are preparing for their Mission trip to the Philippines. This is the first time that we have been able to head over to the Philippines to do some work over there with a local agency. Please pray for safety and good health for the students and for Mr Brown and Mrs Jackson.

COnGrATulATiOnS kATe!

It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge the efforts of Year 11 student Kate W. Kate was recently nominated for the Wild Fig Awards. This is a business related award that is giv-en annually to students studying business studies at central coast schools. Kate’s business idea called IMUM was inno-vative and impressive. She developed a business idea which was an online App that allowed people to have medications delivered via courier to their homes.

This has great potential as a “real world” business idea which was acknowledged by the business leaders who judged her proposal. Kate was one of three finalists in an extremely competitive environment.

The two other finalists created ideas around retro jackets which had custom order artwork related prints and a fresh juice van that could sell products at sporting events. We would like to acknowledge Kate for representing our school in an honourable way and also acknowledge her parents, es-pecially her mother who shared this journey with her. Her business champion was Jo Hanlon who is a local business owner and member of the chamber of commerce.

I would like to also acknowledge Mrs Cairelli for her attend-ance at the finalist’s breakfast. This was a great opportunity to learn from business leaders as well as local members of parliament who were also in attendance.

Well done Kate for winning an award and for being acknowl-edged as a finalist in this way.

last minute Study

What do you do if you have left your study to the last min-ute?

In an ideal world it would be great if all students paid at-tention, focused and participated in all classes, completed all homework and assessments thoroughly, asked for help throughout the year on anything they didn’t understand, made regular summaries of the work covered in class (pref-erably at the end of each topic or section) and did their best to learn as they go throughout the year.

But in reality, this doesn’t always happen for every student and every subject.

So what can you do if you have left your study for tests and exams to the last minute?

5 TipS FOr lAST minuTe STuDY

1. FinD OuT FAST: Be very clear what you need to learn and what will be tested. It is impossible to start your study until you are sure what you have to know. Find out as much as you can too about the exam format and the style of questions. Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher. For each subject write a list of exactly what topics and areas you need to review.

2. GATher mATeriAlS: Do you have notes, materials, textbooks on everything you need to learn? If not, is there a friend who will let you pho-tocopy the work you have misplaced? Is there an online por-tal where material from classes is stored? Can you borrow from the library additional books or textbooks on the topics you need to learn? Are past examination papers available?

3. mAke A plAn: You only have limited time left so you need to make the most of it. Draw up a grid that shows how much time you have left before your exams to study. Decide if you will spend equal time on each subject or if certain subjects need more time. Allocate subjects to the timeslots you have then decide ex-actly what you will do to prepare for each subject. For each

subject make a list of what sort of study you should do to prepare for that subject. Brainstorm your ideas on how to prepare, ask your parents and teachers for feedback andshare ideas with your friends.

4. CreATe STuDY nOTeS: Target your notes to what will be tested. It is best for learn-ing and memory to make your study notes yourself, but if you have run out of time there are options. See if any of your class materials or textbooks have summarised the sections you need, see if there are study guides available in the library on the topics to learn or make targeted notes yourself on the key areas you have to memorise. You could also see if there is a friend where you could split the topics between yourself and share the notes you make. Don’t spend too long on this stage, it needs to be completed as quickly as possible.

5. STuDY!What does study actually mean? It means memorising the material you need to know so you can recall it in the exams, and practising the skills of the subject so you know how to do the types of questions you will have in the exam. To mem-orise your notes you need to test yourself over and over on them. You could read a section, see what you can write down without looking then check. Then review the things you didn’t know again. Or you could do the same approach reading things out loud then seeing what you can repeat out loud. Doing questions, practise essays, past exam questions will also help you understand what you know, and what you need to spend more time on.

The key is to get started. No more procrastination, no more excuses. Start today!

If not, you could be paying more than you should. With Child Care Benefit (CCB) and Child Care Rebate (CCR) you could save 50% off the price of after school care. What’s the CCR? The Child Care Rebate offers a 50% reduction on your after school care fees. It is paid by Centrelink directly to your service, which means your out of pocket costs are halved. The CCR is currently NOT means tested and so long as you meet Centrelink’s minimum work standards, you should be eligible to apply. What Exactly is the CCB? It’s a Government allowance aimed at helping low income earners with the cost of out of school care. Paid by Centrelink, the CCB is means tested so you’ll need to be assessed for your eligible allowance rate. The maximum allowance you can receive from CCB will cover 85% of your after school care fees.
