In the Life of Our Congregation … from the Pastor

October 2016

2

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I greet you in the name of the Risen Christ, the One that calls us to ask, seek, and knock as we strive to grow in our understanding of what it means to be faithful followers of the Living God.

And Jesus said: So I say to you, ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Luke 11:9-10

These words uttered by Jesus have always been very dear to me in my understanding of what it means to serve a congregation. One of the more important roles that I have as the minister of St. Peter’s UCC is that of teacher. I take very seriously my responsibility to provide opportunities for members of the congregation to learn and grow in faith and discipleship. I work to offer classes and discussions that cover a myriad of topics in an effort to help people discern how and where God is calling them to share their gifts and graces in service to God’s glorious creation. In order to be the most effective teacher possible I am always looking for new opportunities to further my knowledge and understanding. This month I am excited to be able to participate in four different seminars and internet based studies. First, I will be attending a workshop to learn more about the practice of contemplative prayer. I will be spending a day at the Benedictine University discovering the nuances of this spiritual discipline as I strive to grow in my prayer life. Secondly, I will be taking two internet-based classes. One of the courses is Practicing Compassion, based on the book Practicing Compassion by Frank Rogers. This class promises to provide a clear, practical guidance on how to cultivate our inner resources to become a healing presence and force of good for the world. The other class is Christ Beside Me, Christ Within Me: Celtic Blessings. By taking this class I hope to live into a regular practice of gratitude and noticing—practices that will help and encourage me to be aware of God presence all around me. Lastly, I will be participating in an international book study of The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World. This book is based on the weeklong discussions by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Archbishop Rev. Desmond Tutu; the subject of the discussions was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet. The book has three components: their own stories and teachings about joy, the most recent findings in the science of deep happiness, and the daily practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives. Both the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu have been tested by great personal and national adversity, and here they share their personal stories of struggle and renewal. Now that they are both in their eighties, they especially want to spread the core message that to have joy yourself, you must bring joy to others. As I share and learn with people from all around the world, people of different faiths, backgrounds, nationalities, and ethnicities, I hope to grow in my understanding of what it means to be truly joyful, even in the face of trials and tribulations. I pray that it will help me lead a more joyful life and be a living example of joy in a world that seems so bereft of joy.

I am really excited about participating in these different learning opportunities. I thank you for the support to continue my growth as both a pastor and Christian. As I progress through them I will be sharing some of what I have gleaned from each one. I pray that each will help me grow in my ability to be an ever more effective pastor and teacher. I pray that each will help me grow in my ability to be an ever more faithful disciple of the Risen Christ and the Living God, to whom be all glory and praise.

Blessings and Peace,

Pastor Mark

On Sunday, October 2nd during Family Worship, we will be celebrating with a Bible Presentation. At this ceremony, any youth from 3 years of age through 5th grade who have not received a bible from the church will be presented with one. If this applies to your child, please try to attend so your child can receive this gift. During Sunday school on October 23rd, our class will be packing pencil bags for the children who will be receiving the shoeboxes through Operation Christmas Child. There will be a group picture taken of the youth helping to be included in each box along with a class poem/prayer we will be composing prior to this date. This helps introduce the youth to service projects/serving others. October 9 Cathy Dutro 2 Timothy 2:8-15 October 16 Luke 18:1-8 October 23 Service Project Day October 30 Luke 18:9-14

Membership and Evangelism

At St. Peter’s, we “mug” our

visitors and guests! The coffee mugs, new and

improved, are back!

On Sundays, please help the ushers identify

guests and visitors who will, in turn, receive a mug

courtesy of St. Peter’s.

KFC is still collecting pop tabs for Ronald

McDonald House. Please take a moment

and pull that tab from your pop cans and

bring them to church! Collection bins

can be found on the tables in

the Fellowship Hall.

Operation Christmas Child

Due to the overwhelming response, we now have plenty of pill bottles, toothbrushes, toothpaste and washcloths. We are right on schedule to meet our goal of 100

items!!!

We are approaching our exciting time of packing the shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. As we gather and sort through all of the supplies we are reminded of how very generous, thoughtful,

and blessed our church is.

Thank you to all that came out to help with our craft day for Operation Christmas Child. We made sewing kits, put together soap and bunny wash clothes. We also made a couple jump ropes. We will be packing the shoeboxes after church on Sunday November 13th. So come one come all as we try to hit our goal of 100! For the month of October we are in need of items for the older boys 10-14. Some suggestions like small hand tools, bungee cords, work gloves, rope, or duct tape.

So, Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 13th after church service for packing shoeboxes.

Thank you again, Cheryl Miller, Kathy Milligan, Laura Pomes

In 1866, a small group of local residents were probably thinking about organizing a new church within the Village of Frankfort. One year later on October 28, 1867, St. Peter’s Deutsche Evangeliche Gemeinde was born. Sunday, October 23, 2016, will find St. Peter’s initiating a year-long celebration of our congregation’s 150

th birthday with a potluck dinner

after worship. In addition, the Frankfort Preservation Foundation will honor our sanctuary for its historic architecture, a landmark within the Village for over 100 years. We will have sign-ups for potluck contributions starting in October. All members of St. Peter’s should have received a letter outlining some of the events of the upcoming year and a memory questionnaire. The Anniversary Committee is seeking recent history by asking members to share their memories of our church. These will be collected and some may be shared during a monthly “history moment” before worship. Additional sheets can be found in the narthex or Church Office where you can also leave your completed “memory.” We are also looking for the addresses of former pastors, intern pastors, interim pastors, and anyone else who would enjoy participating in our October 2017 celebration. Please leave names and addresses with Wendy in the office or with a committee member. Look for more information as the year progresses. “TAMBO,” that all may be one. Anniversary Committee

St. Peter's Preschoolers have had a wonderful start to the new school year! The children and staff enjoyed our first few weeks of learning, playing and making new friends. The highlight of September was Teddy Bear Day. Everyone brought a special teddy to school to share the day with. Some teddy's danced the hokey pokey, some enjoyed circle time, some gobbled a snack, and some even had nap time!

The preschool will be running our annual fall fundraiser until October 18th. The two catalogs are Fannie May chocolates and Mixed Bags recycled bags, kitchen items, and gift wrap. If you would like to order, please see Wendy for a catalog and order form.
