Matthew 20:116 (CEB) Workers in the vineyard 20 “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 After he agreed with the workers to pay them a denarion, [a] he sent them into his vineyard. 3 “Then he went out around nine in the morning and saw others standing around the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I’ll pay you whatever is right.’ 5 And they went. “Again around noon and then at three in the afternoon, he did the same thing. 6 Around ϐive in the afternoon he went and found others standing around, and he said to them, ‘Why are you just standing around here doing nothing all day long?’ 7 “‘Because nobody has hired us,’ they replied. “He responded, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ 8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and give them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and moving on ϐinally to the ϐirst.’ 9 When those who were hired at ϐive in the afternoon came, each one received a denarion. 10 Now when those hired ϐirst came, they thought they would receive more. But each of them also received a denarion. 11 When they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, 12 ‘These who were hired last worked one hour, and they received the same pay as we did even though we had to work the whole day in the hot sun.’ 13 “But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I did you no wrong. Didn’t I agree to pay you a denarion? 14 Take what belongs to you and go. I want to give to this one who was hired last the same as I give to you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you resentful because I’m generous?’ 16 So those who are last will be ϐirst. And those who are ϐirst will be last.” I think that God has been trying to tell me something recently about a particular problem that I am dealing with. At the end of August, I decided to terminate my long relationship with T‐Mobile. I had been a customer of theirs for over 20 years. In the past couple of years, I have not had good cell phone reception at home, sometimes to the point that I couldn’t even look up my contacts. So, being an Amazon freak, I decided to go with AT&T, who is currently the only cell phone carrier that sells the Amazon Fire phone. (I love it by the way!). (Continued on page 2)

Women of St. Paul UMC

Ada Duhigg Circle of United Methodist

Women

We  unfortunately  were  not  able  to  meet  in September as planned and will not be meeting  in October. The next meeting will be November 9 at 12:30 p.m. (Maybe  moving  the  time  back  will help.) We will discuss mission projects for 2015.

At our July meeting, Afton and I came up with a small list of projects that may be of interest to the Ada Duhigg women's circle. One of the  items was to do  something  commemorating  the  anniversary of 9/11. Afton suggested a thank you card and some type of meal  for the Fire Dept.  in Copperton. Bob delivered pizza with salad to the fire department in Copperton  on  Sept  11  to  thank  them  for  their efforts  at  keeping  watch  over  the  town  and  the people  of  Copperton.  He  said  they  were  very appreciative.

On November 11, Afton has arranged for a tour of the Rhodes Bake  'n Serve plant. We need at  least 20  people  to make  this work  and  so  far, we  are falling short. So,  if you are  interested  in this tour, let Afton know and be  sure  to  invite your  friends and neighbors.

Another  idea was  for a diabetic emergency kit. I contacted Brian Diggs at UMCOR West Depot and he says they do not have a need for this type of kit at this time. I checked the internet and found that there are so many variables that it isn't possible to do any sort of kit.  If someone has an  idea on  this we would  appreciate hearing  from  you,  or  please bring  this  information  to  the  next  meeting  in November.

Then we  also  thought  that  it would  be  nice  to have a prayer shawl ministry at St. Paul. If you knit or  crochet  or  sew,  and  this  is  something  you  are interested  in  doing,  bring  your  ideas  and/or materials  to  the  next  meeting  and  we  can  get started.

We have a lot of plans and hope to have many of you ladies join us on November 9, at 12:30 p.m.

PRAYERS JOYS

CONCERNS

For those who continue to work so hard to make St. Paul UMC viable. Thank You!

For the life of our church and those we are missing on Sundays. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

For all whose lives are in transition.

For our family and friends who have yet to feel the love of Christ.

Healing for those in our world who are affected by disasters whether natural or manmade.

For Peaceful resolution to war. For the soldiers and their families.

For Christians around the world who are being persecuted for their beliefs.

We ask for prayers:

For the love and support of our Church family.

For the pure joy of seeing our members at Bible study, at worship and in fellowship every Sunday.

That we live in a country where we are free to be Christians.

That Jesus gave his life so we could be

We share our Joys:

DRIVING AWAY THE SHADOWS BySteveGoodierwww.LifeSupportSystem.com

Here is a little habit that can make a big difference.  How do you drive away shadows?  Apparently,  when  Abraham  Lincoln was  fatally  shot  at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., he was carrying two pairs  of  spectacles  and  a  lens  polisher,  a  pocketknife,  a watch  fob,  a  linen  handkerchief,  and  a  brown  leather wallet containing a five‐dollar Confederate note as well as several newspaper clippings on the Lincoln presidency.

The  newspaper  articles are a curiosity. Why did he carry them with him? The  eight  clippings found  in  his  pockets were  largely  positive portrayals  of  his leadership,  but  the president  was  not egotistical.  In  fact,  if we know  anything  about

Lincoln,  we  know  that  humility  was  one  of  his  most attractive  virtues.  Many  historians  stress  that  his possession  of  these  clippings  was  less  proof  of  a president's  ego  than of  a man who needed  reassurance. The recently‐ ended war had been long and costly. His re‐election campaign had also been a difficult slog. Lincoln rarely  knew  a  day  without  public  criticism.  The newspaper articles would have been affirming to him.  Historians are aware that Abraham Lincoln suffered from bouts  of  serious  depression.  Could  it  be  that  in  those "dark nights  of  the  soul," when despair  settled  over his mind like a cold and heavy snow, that he could reach into his pocket and find hope? Could  it be  that  these words reminded him of what he had dedicated his  life  to,  the good he had tried to do and the lives he had affected?  Francis of Assisi once said, "A single sunbeam  is enough to  drive  away many  shadows." Maybe  each  newspaper article was  a  sunbeam  that  he  collected  and  kept with him.   Have  you  collected  sunbeams?  Have  you  saved  away letters  and  mementos  that  warm  your  heart  and encourage you when you need a lift? They can drive away

3 Reasons to Use UMCmarket for all

your Shopping!

1. OUR STORES ARE AWESOME!

2. ITS TOTALLY EASY!

Using the Easy Give Button App is the easiest way for you to shop and donate. Once it’s downloaded, you will see the UMC Cross and Flame icon in your browser toolbar. This will allow you to shop directly at store websites and let you know that you are connected. Research shows that members who download the Easy Give Button generate more than double the amount of donations to their church.

3. GIVING FEELS GREAT!

Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35. Every time you shop through UMCmarket.org you have the opportunity to give back to your local church to help the mission. It feels great to be able to give to the Lord from something you do everyday like shopping for your busy life needs.

many a dark shadow.  Dale Carnegie tells us this: “You have it easily in your power  to  increase  the  sum  total  of  this  world’s happiness  now.  How?  By  giving  a  few  words  of sincere  appreciation  to  someone  who  is  lonely  or discouraged.  Perhaps  you  will  forget  tomorrow  the kind  words  you  say  today,  but  the  recipient  may cherish them over a lifetime.”  Here  is  little  habit  that  can make  a  big  difference. Send  sunbeams.  Intentionally  send  a  word  of encouragement  or  appreciation  every  day  to  one person. Plan ahead. Keep open  to  those who need a lift. A  letter,  card  or  email will  suffice. Or  a  phone call. It can be short, but must be personal and it must be sincere.    Occasionally  you'll  learn  what  a  difference  your communication  made.  Sometimes  you  won't.  But know  this  –  as  you  drive  away  the world's  shadows you will also fill your life daily with a little more joy.

SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY

P … The Merriam‐Webster Dictionary defines peace as:

1peace noun \’pēs\ : a state of tranquility or quiet: : freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions : harmony in personal relations : a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity

We tend to think of peace in relation to global wars, but  have  you  ever  thought  about  it  in  relation  to your day‐to‐day life?

What would  your  life  look  like  if  your  day‐to‐day was free from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions…your  personal  relationships  were  in harmony…you remained in a state of tranquility?

Peace  was  a  foreign  concept  to  me  for  a  long time.    My  mind  was  always  going  in  a  million directions with a million things to do to accomplish my plans and my goals. I felt like life was a constant battle I was trying to win.

With  faith,  time,  and  practice  at  being  still  & listening  {and of course with God’s help and guidance} I have learned what Peace feels like and I have  to  say  that  I  love  that  feeling. No  stress…No anxiety…No  worry…No  battling.    I  have  to  admit that I am far from perfect at finding peace; however, I am soooo much better at it than I was a few years ago.

I encourage you to find a way to grow close to God that  works  for  you.  It may  be  prayer, meditation, hiking, playing music, keeping a journal, or singing. God  is very flexible  in his delivery method…all you have  to do  is make  the heart  felt effort –  I promise he will meet you half way.

Hugs & Blessings,

Monica

USE YOUR GREATEST POWER BySteveGoodierwww.LifeSupportSystem.comIt's  said  that  your  greatest power  is  your power  to choose. Do you use that power?  Benjamin  Franklin,  one  of  the  great  Founding Fathers  of  the United  States,  did  something  quite remarkable  early in his adult life. At age  20  he  was keenly aware of so‐called  character defects  that hindered  him. Franklin  noticed that  he  had difficulty  getting along with  people. He  tended  to  argue  too much. He had trouble making and keeping friends. The list continued.  Franklin  wanted  to  do  something  about  it.  So  he made  a  choice.  He  chose  to  examine  his  own personality  and make  a  list  of what he  considered undesirable  personality  traits.  Then  he  chose  13 virtues he wanted  to  enhance  in his  life,  each one designed to help him become a better person. They were:  1.  To be temperate, especially  in the consumption

of food and alcohol. 2.  To practice silence and to speak only words that

benefit others. 3.  To live an orderly life. 4.  To resolutely do what ought to be done. 5.  To practice frugality. 6.  To work diligently and manage time well. 7.  To be sincere and honest. 8.  To do what is right and just. 9.  To be moderate in all things. 10.  To practice cleanliness. 11.  To  remain  tranquil  and  calm,  particularly  in

situations that cannot be avoided. 12.  To practice sexual constraint. 13.  To  learn  humility  by  imitating  the  figures  of

Jesus and Socrates.  (He added that last one at the suggestion of a friend who  noted  that  he  might  be  too  conceited.)

St P[ul is…

A church that teaches the word of God as it is

written in the Bible

A church that believes the truth lies in the

teachings of the Bible – even when that truth

is unpopular

A church that believes the church should play an

important role in supporting its local

community

A church that believes all who want to worship

God and live a “Christ Like Life” are welcome

through its doors

Through prayer and by the grace of God, we will

reach out to those who are seeking a relationship

with God. We will guide them in their spiritual

growth by teaching the word of God, as it is written

in the Bible, during our compassionate worship

services which are delivered in the spirit of

Wesleyan tradition. We will further support their

growth by actively providing spiritual support

Pastor Carol

It was New Year's Day. Franklin finished his  list and determined to work on each virtue for a week. He did this  for an entire year,  spending  four weeks  total on each, until he developed new habits.  Benjamin  Franklin was  known  for  one  of  the  finest personalities  in  America.  People  looked  up  to  him and admired him. Later in his life, when the colonies needed  help  from  France,  they  sent  Franklin.  The French liked him and gave him what he wanted. And it all began with his deciding to use his greatest power –  his  power  to  choose.  When  he  chose  to  make needed life changes, everything was different.  Suppose  Franklin  had  chosen  to  go  through  life without  using  his  greatest  power?  Suppose  he reasoned  that  there was  really  nothing  he  could  do about  himself.  Would  France  have  supported  the colonies?  The  history  of  his  new‐born  country may have been significantly different.  One  good  wish  changes  nothing.  But  one  good decision  changes  everything.  Your  power  to  choose, to  make  a  good  decision,  spells  the  difference between wishing and making real life changes.  Are  you  using  your  greatest  power?  Your  power  to choose  can  never  be  taken  from  you.  It  can  be neglected  and  it  can  be  ignored.  But  if  used,  it  can make all the difference.  Poet Susan Polis Schutz puts it this way:  “This life is yours. Take the power to choose what you want to do and do it well. Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly. Take the power to walk in the forest and be a part of nature. Take the power to control your own life. No one else can do it for you. Take the power to make your life happy.” Use  your  greatest  power  and,  whether  or  not  you change history, you will certainly change your future.
