Page Three St Paul’s Church, Webster, New York April 29, 2018

This weekend we celebrate First Holy Communion at St. Paul’s. Our children have made their first confessions,

and have prepared their souls to welcome Jesus Christ in an extraordinary way into their very beings. This day is a

most wonderful, most important day in the life of faith. The First Holy Communion of our young people is also a

good opportunity for us to reflect upon, and remind ourselves, of not only what we receive in Holy Communion,

but also what happens to us when we receive Holy Communion.

First Communicants, you have been looking forward to this day for a long #me and now you are

so excited. You are very special and important today and that is why we are all here for you.

Parents, for you this is a special and happy day as well. Today you see your child taking a new

step in faith as you present them to share with us all in the fullness of the Lord’s Supper for the

first #me. You were their first teachers in the ways of faith. You have to remember that it is

through parents more than anyone else children come to know about God. Even if you are a

teacher, an excellent one, priest or parish, unless the children sense their parents’ faith they will

not absorb faith. Teachers and priests cannot plant faith in the heart of children if parents do not.

Family, friends, and people of the parish, this is a #me of great rejoice for you too. You all in var-

ious ways have helped to lead these children to this special day. I am sure you will help with their

future growth in this faith. Please do so and please remember them in your prayers.

In the recep#on of the Eucharist, we receive nothing other than Jesus Himself. The Eucharist is not a symbol, but

a reality. Christ is really, truly, and substan#ally among us. The Mass itself is not something we do for God, but

something God does for us.

What happens to us in Holy Communion? We are transformed! Jesus gives Himself to us in this way that we

might be transformed and become more like Him. In becoming more like Him, we don’t become less who we are.

We grow in true joy and happiness.

The ability to receive Jesus in the Eucharist is a gi/. Nobody can receive the Eucharist for you. It has to be a con-

scious act that you choose for yourself. You have to step forward and meet Jesus in the Eucharist for yourself. As

a parent, you can lead your child in faith and teach him as best you can. As Anne Frank said, “Parents can only

give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own

hands.”

As Catholics, we have the choice to be Christ’s body in the world, as St. Teresa of Avila reminds us, “Christ has no

body now on earth but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which the com-

passion of Christ must look out on the world. Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good. Yours

are the hands with which he is to bless his people.”

If I can leave one thought with you let it be this. Your First Communion is a very special day but each and every

#me you receive the Eucharist is special. Every #me we receive the Eucharist, we can do so with the eyes of a

child receiving for the first #me.

“This is my Body, given for you.” How will I be His body in this world today?

Have You Read...

Lewis, C.S.

The Case for Chris#anity

This slim book, considered a theological classic, is based on

a series of broadcasts given in England when Lewis was a

Fellow at Oxford. It is a chronology of his spiritual journey

from atheism to Theism to Chris#anity and many people

consider it one of the best arguments for Chris#anity of all

#me. The book is divided into two parts: “Right and Wrong

as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe” and “What

Chris#ans Believe.” He asserts that human beings all over

the earth have the idea they ought to behave in a certain

way, but they don’t in fact behave that way. He then ex-

amines the reality of Moral Law and the Power behind the

Moral Law. He discusses the contrast between right and

wrong, and gives the essen#als of belief shared by all

Chris#an churches. (Call No. 230-Lew)

Separate Is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez &

Her Family’s Fight for Desegrega#on

Sylvia Mendez was told she had to go to the Mexican

school. She was not allowed to go to the regular public

school a/er moving to her new home. Her father thought

this must be a mistake. But no, he found out “that is how

it is done.” However, Mr. Mendez didn’t believe that

Mexican students had to go to an inferior school in the

middle of a cow pasture with an electrified fence rather

than playground equipment. He fought in the courts while

his wife took care of the children and ran the farm. Read

this book to see how the human spirit can triumph in very

difficult situa#ons. j379.2 TON Grades 2 and up
