March 4, 2018— March 10, 2018
3rd Sunday of Lent “You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” (Exodus
20:4) How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things,
things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we
cannot touch and are much harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or health.
THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 4, 2018
Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Continuing on this Lenten Journey, we now look towards the second pillar of Lent: Fasting. Now
many may dismiss this call, but I go back to a principle I’ve heard articulated many times: If you can’t say
No, your Yes means nothing. Now, the exact source of this is hard to pin down, as trying to track down the
original author isn’t easy. However, it is very similar to our Lord’s Words in Matthew 5:37: “Let your ‘Yes’
mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.”
What does all of this have to do with fasting? Simply put, if we cannot say no to our passions, we are
trapped and imprisoned by them. We are called to freedom in Christ, but so often, fasting coupled with prayer
is left off the table. So how powerful is fasting combined with prayer? Jesus himself points out right after the
events of the transfiguration, when the apostles failed to act in his name to drive out an evil spirit and Jesus
has to intervene, “After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it
(demon) out?’ He replied, ‘This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting.’” (Mk 9:27-29).
What are some of the other effects of fasting? Here’s a list*
• Fasting opens up our hearts to conversion
• Fasting gives weight to our prayer intentions
• Fasting strengthens us in resisting temptations
• Fasting and prayer promote peace in our hearts and peace with one another
• Fasting teaches us the difference between “wanting” and “needing”
• Fasting reminds us of the plight of the poor and for many in the world who are perpetually hungry
• Fasting and prayer can free us from addictive behavior
• “Fasting will lead us to a new freedom of heart and mind.” — Fr. Slavko Barbaric O.F.M
• Fasting invites the Holy Spirit in to heal our hearts, our relationship with God and our relationship with
others
In this season, let us all continue to grow in the love of God through fasting and prayer.
God Bless,
Fr. Jim
