EAR GUESTSIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you once again to the St. MoritzPolo World Cup on Snow. In its 29th year of existence, our tournamentpromises to be the best and most prestigious polo tournament on snow, thanks to the four excellently assembled teams representing world-classsponsors.
As the world’s only high-goal polo tournament on snow in the scopeof the World Polo Tour, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow pos-sesses enormous appeal. In polo, this tournament enjoys a distinct sta-tus, not unlike that of the Olympic Games in the context of global sport. Our tournament inspires, creates sustainable added value and is a per-manent fixture on the calendars of the world’s best polo players. Win-ning the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is an unforgettableexperience, and to hold the Cartier Trophy aloft against the backdrop ofthe wonderful mountain region of the Upper Engadin is akin to win-ning an Olympic gold medal.
Following on from the games of 1928 and 1948, the Winter Olym-pic Games could take place in St. Moritz for the third time. The SwissConfederation supports St. Moritz and Davos’s endeavour to submit abid for the 2022 Winter Games. The potential bid is also supported bythe canton of Graubünden and Swiss Olympic, the governing body forSwiss sport. The vote to decide upon the bid will be held in Graubün-den on 3 March 2013. I am confident that the public will also supportthis project, because a regionally rooted sport event with internationalreach has a very strong appeal.
Year after year, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is proof ofthis. Therefore, I would like to thank all those who will contribute to thistournament: Team Ralph Lauren with captain Michael Bickford, Team
Cartier with captain Jonathan Munro Ford, Team Sal.Oppenheim with captain Richard Davis and Team BMWwith captain Andreas Knapp Voith, all of the sponsorsand tournament partners, the officials, assist-ants andalso the spectators, who come out to enjoy the polo onthe frozen Lake St. Moritz.
I hope that you will take pleasure in the St. MoritzPolo World Cup on Snow 2013. Once again, it promi-ses to be an event unlike any other.

Oliver EllisTOURNAMENT DIRECTOR AND UMPIRE
Having begun playing polo at Cowdray ParkPony Club in his childhood years, Oliver Ellishas enjoyed an extensive career playing pro-fessional polo. At the peak of his career he reached a six-goal handicap and played at themajority of the top polo clubs around theworld. Among his many successes he has represented England, won the British Open, the Warwickshire Cup and the Prince of WalesCup. With a successful career playing profes-sional polo and as a member of Cowdray ParkPolo Club for over 30 years, Ellis was thenmade Polo Manager at Guards Polo Club from2002 to 2012. With extensive polo experienceboth at home and abroad, Ellis is now explor-ing pastures new and will return this year asthe lead umpire at the St Moritz Polo WorldCup on Snow.
Having played and umpired all over theworld, Ellis is a highly experienced umpire. Dur-ing his time at Guards Polo Club he organisedvarious umpiring meetings and talks for mem-bers and players. He encouraged playing mem-bers to take their umpire test while providinginfluential speakers, both from the sport andoutside the world of polo, to inspire and motiv-ate players. Ellis maintains that, to be a goodplayer, umpire training is paramount as it donates an in-depth understanding of thegame and requires respect for all players. As aresult of Ellis’ instrumental efforts, the umpi-ring team at Guards Polo Club has expandedsignificantly.
During the Britishseason, Ellis umpiresat committee level atCowdray Park PoloClub as well as at other prestigious Brit-
ish polo clubs and private polo events. Duringthe winter months he can often be found um-piring at the St. Moritz Polo World Cup onSnow. Irrespective of the playing surface andclimate, polo is a fantastic sport to watch andplay. As such, Ellis states that any well-playedmatch with both teams playing with style andcharm is always a pleasure to watch and espe-cially umpire.
Having experienced all levels of polo, Ellishas acquired a vast knowledge and under-standing of the sport, which has earned himboth popularity and respect from players andpat-rons alike. He understands the most im-portant elements of the game and what hispriorities must be when umpiring. A credit toany club, team or match, it is no surprise thatEllis has been invited not only to umpire but
also to take up theprestigious positionof Tournament Direc-tor for this year’s St. Moritz Polo WorldCup on Snow.

The Food of the GodsSWISS CAVIAR – THE PERSUIT OF PERFECTION
For 5,000 years caviar has been firmly anchored as a delicacy in almost every great culture andhas been produced unchanged for centuries. In ancient Greece, caviar was introduced by fanfa-res at banquets, and in Roman literature it is described that a bowl of caviar cost as much as ahundred lambs. The Persians in turn used caviar as a medi-cine and the Russian tsars considered caviar to be “the foodof the gods”.
Raised in the wild and environmentally friendlyIn 2011 the UN prohibited the fishing of wild sturgeonsand consequently the trade of “wild caviar”. In contrastZwyerCaviar‘s sturgeons grow up in an unspoilt naturallandscape in a largely untouched environment. The sustainably run aquafarms meet the highest

At first sight, polo looks fairly simple. However, the written rules of thegame, governing all the moves andrights of way, are myriad. The safetyof the ponies and their riders is para-mount and given the highest priority,in addition to balanced, competitiveand fluid play. To give a broad under-standing of polo, and make it possibleto follow the game, the main rules areoutlined on these pages.
The fieldPolo can be played on practically any level field of sufficient size.Theground must be firm and constantlymaintained. The official internationaldimensions of a polo field are 182 me-tres wide by 274 metres long. Polo onsnow is played on smaller fields, as thephysical strain of playing winter polo, mostly at higher altitudes, is greateron the ponies than that experiencedin summer polo on grass. The goal hasuprights but no crossbar, and is 7.3metres wide.
TeamsEach team consists of four players.Number 3 is usually the captain, whoorganises the team. Number 4, alsoknown as “back“, is responsible fordefence, while the other two playersare attackers.
HandicapDepending on ability, each polo playerplays with a handicap ranging from –2to +10. While the entry level of –2 de-notes a beginner, very few players inthe world hold the highest possiblehandicap of +10, and most of theseare Argentineans. A player’s handicapis reviewed annually, according to hisperformance. When a team is put together, the handicaps of the four in-dividual players are added up to givethe team handicap.
TournamentTournaments are promoted in variousclasses of play (low-, medium- or high-goal), and the handicaps of the teamsmust correspond to these. If teams ofdifferent handicaps play against eachother, the difference is made up by allocating the appropriate number ofgoals to one team.
ChukkaDepending on the organisation of thetournament, a polo match consists of four, five or six time units known as chukkas. In high-goal snow polo, a match normally consists of fourchukkas, each lasting 7.5 minutes. Thelast chukka of the game lasts exactlyseven minutes. A pony can be playedin no more than two chukkas in anyone match, and not in consecutive

chukkas. If polo is played on grass, athalf-time there is a five-minute break,dur-ing which the public are asked to walk on to the field and “tread in“ thedivots of turf carved up by the ponies’hooves.
Direction of play The game has one tradition which always confuses newcomers to polo.Whenever a goal is scored, the direc-tion of play switches. The rule tracesits origin to the hotter climes of theBritish Empire. Playing against a lowand dazzling sun put one team at adecisive disadvantage. The rule alsoprevents excessive damage to the turfat the weaker team’s goal mouth dueto one-way play.
Right of way The fundamental and most importantrule of the sport of polo is known asthe “Right of Way“ (ROW). Wheneverthe ball is in play, a right of way existsand is always deemed to be held bythe player who is established on, or atthe closest angle to, the line of the ball(LOB = the extended path along whichthe ball has travelled, or is travelling). No other player may enter or cross thisLOB. Players may not position or checktheir ponies over the line if this posesthe slightest risk of collision with theplayer who currently has ROW.
“Hooking“ and “riding off“The player with ROW can only losethis by being “ridden off“ or “hook-ed“. ‘Hooking’ means using the stickto prevent the other player from re-trieving or striking the ball. This isdone by blocking the opponent’s stick
during a swing or while the otherplayer is tapping or dribbling the ball.It is forbidden to hook over the bodyof the opponent’s pony. “Riding off“means trying to force an opponentwho is riding parallel off course similarto a body check, so that the player canno longer hit the ball. “Riding off“ isallowed provided it takes place paral-lel, and not at an angle, to the playerwho has ROW.
Tapping techniques In principle, the ball is tapped on theright-hand side of the pony, known asthe “offside“. Tapping takes place ina forward (offside forehand) or back-ward (offside backhand) direction. Fora “nearside“ play, which takes placeon the pony’s left-hand side, theplayer has to twist in the saddle and, still holding the stick in his right hand, bring it to the other side of the pony.Nearside forehand and nearside back-hand are the corresponding forwardand backward plays.“Under the neck“refers to strokes performed in front of, or under the neck of, the pony.Among the trickiest manoeuvres are“tail strokes“, performed to the rearof the horse.
