INVOCATION

Presiding Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Congregation: Amen. (All responses without music are spoken) CONFESSION P: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking

him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride,

For sins of habit and sins of choice, For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, You should cast me away from your presence forever.

O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake. P: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God

made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Fa-ther and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. Kyrie: LORD, HAVE MERCY

P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost in sin may be brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ.

C: Christ, have mercy.

P: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as we await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

Page 3

P: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you.

C: Amen.

GLORIA: GLORY BE TO GOD

THE WORD SALUTATION

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray.

Eternal God, your Son, Jesus, is the Christ, the one anointed for the nations and our Savior. He is the Lamb of God who embraced the way of the cross to redeem us. Grant us faith to embrace the way of the cross as our way of life and to declare his redemptive presence to our world; for he lives and reigns with you and the Ho-ly Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen. FIRST LESSON JEREMIAH 38:1-13 (NIV2011)

Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehukal son of Shelemiah, and Pash-hur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said, 2 “This is what the LORD says: ‘Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’ 3 And this is what the LORD says: ‘This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.’” 4 Then the officials said to the king, “This man should be put to death. He is discourag-ing the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin.” 5 “He is in your hands,” King Zedekiah answered. “The king can do nothing to oppose you.” 6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud. 7 But Ebed-Melek, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jere-miah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate, 8 Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him, 9 “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.” 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” 11 So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the

Page 5

palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern. 12 Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so, 13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah re-mained in the courtyard of the guard.

PSALM OF THE DAY PSALM 116

Women: I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;* Men: he heard my cry for mercy. Women: Because he turned his ear to me,* Men: I will call on him as long as I live. Women: The LORD is gracious and righteous;* Men: when I was in great need, he saved me.

SECOND LESSON 1 PETER 4:12–19 (NIV 2011) 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice inasmuch as you par-ticipate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is re-vealed. 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Chris-tian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

GENERAL VERSE

GOSPEL MARK 8:27–35 (NIV 2011) P: The Gospel according to Mark chapter 8. C: Glory be to you, O Lord. 27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” 28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” 30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. 31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be re-jected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

Page 8

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human con-cerns.” 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For who-ever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ. CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

SERMON Based on Mark 8:27–35

Pain Brings Gain Reflection questions on today’s sermon: What does persecution look like around the world? In your life?

How do you try to avoid that pain that comes with being a Christian?

Why did Jesus embrace pain?

How do we gain from pain? APOSTLES’ CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THANK OFFERING Moved by God’s love in Christ, we offer him our first and best gifts, purely out of thanks to him. If you are visiting with us today, please do not feel obligated to give an offering. Our offerings will be collected today at the church entrance. To give by phone send a text message to 844-703-3129 with the amount you would like to contribute and you will be sent further instructions.
