I’ve done a lot of traveling this summer and while traveling I have had the opportunity to worship as a visitor and see what some other churches do for hospitality. My first travel experience was to Colum-bus, for the Southern Ohio Synod Assembly in early June, at Capital University. Bishop Hanson, via a video address, reminded us that we are heirs of God’s clear words of promise and command as revealed in Matthew 28. Jesus told his disciples (us) that he will be with us al-ways, and to go and tell the Good News. Nourished through the means of grace, we are to be turned not inward but outward, bearing witness in the world as Jesus calls us.

Along with my family, I traveled to San Francisco for a week the end of June and worshipped at St. Mark, the oldest Lutheran church in the city. The building survived the 1909 earth-quake but sustained damage after the earthquake a few years ago. The congregation has in-vested in repairing, renovating and strengthening the building but has not lost focus on shar-ing the Good News. We were warmly greeted at the door, and introduced to other travelers –a pastor and his wife from Alberta, Canada. Many people greeted us before and after worship and included us in sharing the peace. St. Mark was one of the few congregations I have ever worshipped at where the participants were of all age, gender, race, class and sexual orienta-tion. The service was wonderful, with a small but mighty choir sharing their gifts of voice. After the service, which included Holy Communion, the entire congregation was invited into the basement fellowship room for ‘coffee.’ This congregation may have been in San Fran-cisco, but they served food like we do in Darke County. Sandwiches, fresh veggies and fruits, cakes and cookies were offered – and not even a free will basket in sight. The congregation shares ‘coffee’ and fellowship time after every 11 am service.

We spent Sunday afternoon at the Fillmore Jazz Festival; the multi-block long two day festival spotlights a variety of jazz groups throughout the days. Vendors sold food under tents and artists sold their paintings, jewelry, knitting and other works. A Presbyterian church was at one end of the festival blocks. The church building wore a large banner, inviting in visitor- to listen to the free organ concert, use the restroom, or just take a quiet break from the crowds. I was impressed that a congregation would open themselves up during a neighborhood event that attracted thousands. They took the risk of physical wear or even damage to show hospi-tality.

In mid July, I went to a workshop in Dayton led by Gary Peuch, the Youth and Family Director of the Southern Ohio Synod. He taught the participants some basics, including how to intro-duce yourself to a group of people and how to start a conversation. Gary reminded the par-ticipants that the church is all about building relationships and that we need to practice skills to create relationships.

This summer, while visiting family or friends, have you had an opportunity to worship at a dif-ferent congregation? How were you welcomed? Did you have any problems following the service or finding your way around? What did you learn that you can bring back to St. Mat-thews or Trinity, that we might be more welcoming and hospitable? Please let me know, or share your thoughts with leaders on council.

Peace,Pastor Joene

From the Pastor
