My dear family of St. Matthew!
Today, as I write this, is Day 16 for me of a 33-day preparation for Consecration to St. Joseph as inspired and compiled by Fr. Don Calloway, MIC. He draws on the very rich but relatively unknown traditions, meditations, homilies, and teachings on the life of St. Joseph going back to the time of the New Testament, but even more so, in more recent times, drawing on many contemporary saints who greatly reflected on the vocation, role, and essential gift of the fatherhood of Joseph in bringing up and protecting his Son, Jesus, the Word made flesh, Splendor of the Father, the Son of the living God, and of course, his Son’s Mother Mary, his beloved wife. Just to mention a few of these graced individuals in the past and of more recent history, St. Lawrence of Brindisi, St. Bernardine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, and, in more recent times, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, St. Peter Julian Eymard, Blessed Petra of St. Joseph, St. Andre Bessette — all of whom have kept devotion to St. Joseph prominent in the lives of God’s people. Just a little recent history for some background, in 1962, St. Joseph’s name was added to the first Eucharistic prayer in the Mass, and then in 2013, on his feast day of May 1st, Pope Francis had St. Joseph inserted into all other Eucharistic Prayers, and he also consecrated Vatican City State to St. Joseph.
As I mentioned last week, on my retreat out West to the Grand Canyon, I already made a simple Consecration to St. Joseph after a “novena” or 9-day preparation of prayer to St. Joseph. So on the 9th day of the novena, which I counted out ahead of time was going to be on Thursday, July 23, 2020, in the morning before heading out from Flagstaff to visit two brother priests (also blood brothers) serving in Phoenix, AZ, at the parish church of St. Augustine, I made a simple Act of Consecration to St. Joseph.
And so what an amazing grace and also a beautiful, marvelous surprise when God as a confirmation of my consecration day let me see a wooden carving on the wall in their Perpetual Adoration Chapel at the Phoenix Parish of St. Augustine of the “Three Hearts.” I don’t recall ever seeing anything like this before — what a powerful gift! I did a simple Google-images search and found a number of other pieces of art depicting these “Three Hearts” of (1) Jesus’ Sacred Heart, (2) the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and (3) the Chaste Heart of St. Joseph. I had also begun after some discernment this longer 33-day preparation period for Consecration to St. Joseph by Fr. Don Calloway which I will complete, God-willing, on the Feast of Our Lady of Knock, an approved apparition of Mary from August 21, 1879. Interestingly, and the reason I chose to consecrate myself on this upcoming feast day, is that included in this vision of Mary at Knock, Ireland, were also present Jesus as a Lamb on an altar, St. John who had received Mary as his Mother from Jesus on the Cross, and then also to one side, was none other than St. Joseph!!
So why this focus on St. Joseph now? First, we need the spiritual fatherhood of St. Joseph to help us protect marriage and the family in our day and age! Many people no longer know what it means to be a man or a woman, let alone what constitutes a marriage and family. Many countries even claim to have redefined marriage and the family. Servant of God Sr. Lucia dos Santos, the longest-lived visionary of the Fatima apparitions (she lived to be a month short of 99 years of age) herself said that the final battle between the Lord and the kingdom of Satan will be about marriage and the family. In the Litany of St. Joseph, it is not unimportant that among a good number of descriptions for St. Joseph, he is also called upon as the “Terror of Demons!” To combat and overcome Satan’s deceptions, the Church needs St. Joseph, the Head of the Holy Family! Total consecration to Mary is not diminished by total consecration to St. Joseph, especially since we can say definitely that Mary wants you to consecrate yourself to Joseph too — be at peace, the Hearts of Jesus, Mary, and St. Joseph are one! Spiritual fatherhood of St. Joseph is needed just as the spiritual motherhood of Mary is greatly needed too! With my first consecration I made to St. Joseph on my Grand Canyon retreat, I sense I am only beginning, as I continue to reflect and deepen my love for God our Father through the image of Him reflected in the life and love of St. Joseph, chosen to be from eternity the nurturing father for God’s beloved eternal Son. St. Joseph is a marvelous intercessor and protector, who by his life reveals to us a truly humble, hard-working, caring, protecting, loving father to Jesus and to us, who are Jesus’ brothers and sisters. And since as one of us, Jesus needed the care and example and love of a human father, may we also benefit from that deep love that Joseph had for Jesus and Jesus, of course from eternity, had for Joseph! May St. Joseph in his great humility and strength, grant us protection from harm and also a deep, compassionate love for Mother Mary, her Son Jesus, and His beautiful Bride, our beloved Church! St. Joseph, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, humble, just, chaste, loving, protective, pray for us!
In the three living, loving, giving and caring Hearts of Jesus and Mary and Joseph, Fr. Gregor
