Calendar of Events: Term 1 Dear Parents and Carers, Lord, thank you for Your presence in our lives. At times it is hard to recognise Your words that speak to us through different people.
We know that You care about us deeply and that You are always ready to encourage and protect us.
In this time of Lent, help us to be mindful of Your presence each day.
TRAFFIC ISSUE
In recent days a very serious traffic issue has been brought to my attention as a result of a serious accident that nearly occurred last week. A letter has been sent home to each family today. I urge all parents to read the letter carefully and be aware of the issues raised.
Also, we have had some parents parking illegally in Calvert St. before and after school. I ask that you take note of the No Standing signs and strictly adhere to these. The safety of our children is paramount.
CONGRATULATIONS - to Hannah Dale and Deon Oborne on the safe arrival of baby girl Billie Rose at the weekend. Both mum and Billie are doing very well.

I ask all parents to consider this important role, as it is a great way to contribute to the life of our school. Nomination forms will need to be submitted to the office by Friday 9

CLASSROOM NEWS
PREP: We were so very proud of the Prep children at the Beginning of School Mass last Friday. They were very respectful in the church and did a wonderful job receiving the blessing from their buddy. They are really beginning to find their feet in the classroom and we could not be prouder of how hard they are working. We have been learning to break words into sounds and have been practising our sentence of the week - That ant had a hat. It was wonderful to see how many prep children had been reading at home and practising their sentence and words. We have noticed that a lot of our prep children have been finding it tricky to open their food containers and re-pack their lunch boxes. We ask that parents and guardians please pack containers that their child can open and close with ease. Just a few friendly reminders:
Reading Folders are to be brought to school each Monday
Library books can be returned to the Pirate or Dinosaur Box in the Prep Corridor before the next Specialist Day
Specialist Day is on every second Tuesday
Please ensure that your child arrives at school in time to complete their morning jobs before the bell rings at 8.55am
We encourage the Prep children to carry their own school bag and complete their morning jobs independently
Have a wonderful weekend. Paula [email protected] Leah [email protected]
[email protected] Paula and Leah GRADE 1/2: With the term well under way now, we enjoyed the opportunity to meet with parents through our parent teacher interview on Monday this week. It was a great opportunity to ensure children have settled into their new classrooms well. In Andre’s class we had some exciting news as we welcome John to grade 1/2, John has come all the way from South Sudan and the children have been fantastic in settling him into our school. Last Friday we shared a special celebration with our beginning of school mass, the children presented our learning statements and prayer cloths during the mass. Prayer Gatherings will begin tomorrow morning with the grade 6 leadership team leading our first gathering. Next Wednesday the 7th of March will be specialist day for the 1/2's. Have a great weekend.

GRADE 3/4: The Year 3-4 Crew have again kept busy this week. In literacy we have developed our sizzlings starts and moved onto the tightening tension parts of our pirate narratives. We are beginning to edit our work, looking for grammar and punctua-tion errors and also adding descriptive language to make our narratives more engaging. During maths we are continuing with place value and are playing some brilliant games to keep us all on our toes. Bluearth time on Tuesday mornings has been fantastic, some great teamwork and sportsmanship being displayed by all children. We have been focusing on skills such as throwing and catching and we would encourage students to continue practising these skills at home.
Reminders: Diaries: Keep filling out the diaries each night and remember they are due in every Thursday to your teacher :) Headphones: All students in Grade Three and Four need to provide a set of headphones to use with our class Chromebooks and iPads. The headphones need to be clearly labelled and will be kept in your child’s tub to use through-out the year. Homework: At this stage of the year, we are encouraging all our Grade Three and Four students to enjoy reading with their families as their homework. Students are encouraged to read and listen to a variety of texts, such as Library books, short novels borrowed from the Library, favourite books from your own bookshelf at home, newspapers, and mag-azines. After reading you can prompt your child into telling you all the important parts of the text and identifying its genre i.e. fiction (made up, story) or non-fiction (true, information). The title of your chosen text and page numbers or chapter are to be recorded in your child's diary. Prayer Gathering: Nicole and Judy’s crew will be leading Prayer Gathering on Friday 9th of March in the Church at 9am.

GRADE 5/6:
We are into the full swing of things in 5/6 and students should be proud of the way they have started the year. Classes are now focusing on reading and writing skills and there has been some fantastic persuasive writing created by the students, with a few promising future politicians in the group. In Numeracy, our focus has been on place value and our Religion unit continues to work through Lent in the lead up to Easter. Congratulations are in order for the grade 6’s who blessed their buddy last week in our beginning of the year mass. They showed great leadership for their prep buddies and each student should be proud of they way they presented themselves and represented the school. The Year 6 students will continue their leadership journey at Jodie and Kerryn’s 5/6 Prayer Gathering on Friday, when they will receive their school leadership badges. It was great to meet so many parents at our parent teacher interviews earlier this week and we all look forward to strengthening parent/teacher relationships. Reminders: To please return local permission forms and Medical forms to the office as well as the Grade 6 leadership order form for their tops. As we are still experiencing some warm days at school, students are reminded to drink plenty of water and a water bottle in class is encouraged. Additionally, we also encourage students to bring in a piece of fruit of a morning to keep them energised and focused. Sports: We are in the process of selecting the boys and girls tennis players for the Colac Divisional School Sports Victoria event. Our successful KO tennis competition which has been held during lunch times over the past 2 week, has been competitively played with plenty of good tennis. We are up to Semi Finals stage. Letters will go home a.s.a.p. regarding selected students for the SSV event at the Colac Lawn Courts. We must also congratulate all the St. Mary’s tennis players that have done so well recently in local tournaments. The Pol-warth Tennis Championships last weekend saw Georgia Edwards, Aanlin Cheeran Benoy, Sophie Richardson, Oli-ver Coulson, Ella Harwood, Austin Atkins, Eliza Speirs, Jack and Jenny Fish and Harry Sells in the winners or runner-up list. Well done. In Bluearth, students have enjoyed participating in triple jump and shot put in the lead up to our athletics day. Swim times have been sent to Nicole Lynch for her to check over and a list of successful swimmers will be notified of the Regional Swimming Championships.

Prayer Gatherings
On Fridays each class takes a turn at leading our school in prayer at our weekly Prayer Gatherings. Prayer Gatherings are a time for our community to gather together in prayer. It is a time for prayer and reflection. We are very fortunate to have the use of St Mary’s Church for our Prayer Gatherings and we ask that everyone respects this sacred space. Whilst we have used the church for concerts and performances our Prayer Gatherings are not designed to be a concert or performance. We show our appreciation to each class for their efforts in leading us at prayer at the end of the Prayer Gathering allowing us to focus on the whole prayer experience rather than applauding individual items. Can we ask for your cooperation in order to make our Prayer Gatherings a prayerful experience for our whole school community. Please do not bring food/drink into the church (including take-away coffee) Please refrain from taking video/photographs during the Prayer Gathering. Please clap at the end of the Prayer Gathering to thank the class for their efforts in
leading us in prayer rather than applaud individual items. We have included the Prayer Gathering Roster for Terms 1 and 2 so that you can add these dates to your diary. Our first Prayer Gathering is on Friday 2nd March at 9am. During this Prayer Gathering our Year 6 students make leadership pledges and receive their badges. Many thanks Tanya Stewart and Jodie Hassett Religious Education Leaders
