ALUMINUM CANS FOR ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

There is an old saying “a penny saved is a penny earned.” So, don’t throw your pennies away!! Instead of placing your aluminum cans in the city’s blue recycle bins, put them in the trailer parked next to Ed’s Place at the back of the church property. (Please, no metal cans or tin foil, only aluminum cans.) The Knights of Columbus will deliver them to the recycling center and donate the money received to St. Vincent de Paul. This is a great service project and corporal work of mercy —-and the money helps families in need. We also collect food items for the food pantry. Collection boxes are located in the foyer of the church for your nonperishable dona-tions. Furniture items such as beds, sofas, stoves, and refrigerators are also needed, as well as cash donations.

Free Office Supplies...You can help us accumulate Rewards Points at Office Depot each time you pur-chase merchandise there. Just give the cashier the Church phone number (687-5121) when you check out. They will send us Reward Cards quarterly re-deemable for free merchandise.

PRAYER IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC O God of compassion, your people are anxious in this time of pandemic. Send your Holy Spirit among us to dispel our fears. We cry out to you in our confusion; comfort us in our affliction. Grant our leaders wisdom to guide us. Strengthen and sustain those who are ill, and be with those who care for them. Help us to travel this road in solidarity with our neighbors, with our eyes fixed on the salvation promised us through the death and resurrection of your Son, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

DIOCESE OF SHREVEPORT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS RETURN TO CLASS ON AUGUST 10, 2020 Bishop Francis I. Malone & Sister Carol Shively, Diocesan Superin-tendent of Schools are excited to announce the opening day for the

Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Shreveport which is scheduled for Monday, August 10th. The Diocese operates 2 high schools and 4 elementary schools in both Shreveport and Monroe. “Our schools have worked incredibly hard since March to prepare resumption of classes, comments Sister Shively. Every school has put in place to ensure a safe, effective means of education our young in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic.” For more information on the upcoming school year, contact the Office of Catholic Schools at 318-868-4441.

OUR DEEPEST NEEDS The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thou-sand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hun-gers? Where are my thirsts?” After material needs are satisfied and, in some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multiplied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill.

THIRST: You have put salt in our mouths that we may thirst for you. —St. Augustine
