- Dear Sisters and Brothers -

I am writing this article while attending the annual Spring Assembly of Priests of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. This is the only time of the year when all of the priests serving in the archdiocese have the opportunity to come together for prayer, study, and fellowship. Tonight, the priests and bishops will honor those priests celebrating 10, 25, 40, 50, 60, 65, and 70 years of priesthood. Frs. Edward Eschweiler and Edward Safiejko are the two men who have been priests for 70 years. Fr. Art Heinze is celebrating 50 years as a priest and I am celebrating 25 years of priesthood. Nine priests are retiring from active ministry and four new priests will be ordained on May 19. Over the past two days, two Milwaukee priests have passed away, Fr. John Hentzner and Fr. Carl Kazmierczak. (Fr. Hentzner was the last surviving member of the ordination class of 1945.) I ask you to please keep those preparing for ordination and all the priests of the archdiocese in your prayers.

I invite all parishioners to join the students of our parish school this Tuesday for the 8:15 am Mass. We will honor our Blessed Mother and have a May Crowning at the end of Mass, led by our 4th Grade students. The May Crowning is one of those wonderful Catholic traditions that is not celebrated much anymore. I am pleased that we are restoring this custom at St. Mary.

        ±

Finally, I would like to thank the many parishioners who have already responded to my homily three weeks ago regarding the financial needs of the parish. Your positive comments have been greatly appreciated and contributions to close this year’s looming deficit began coming in the following Monday. Thank you!

I need to clarify one thing with you: A few parishioners have asked if they can pledge money toward the salary of an associate pastor. While I am very appreciative of that offer, I cannot accept pledges of that type. If an associate pastor is going to be appointed to St. Mary by Archbishop Listecki, it will not be for another year at minimum. I am unable to hire an associate pastor, nor can the parish. Paying the salary for another priest, or for any member of the parish staff, cannot be the work of a few parishioners. It must be something that is covered by all of the parish families giving their fair share to the parish. This is why I am asking every family to increase their giving each month. Like our debt retirement campaign and our emergency collection for our Sister Parish, when we all do our part, amazing things can happen.

I extend my prayers and best wishes to all the mothers, grandmothers, and other women

who bless our families with their love and presence. I hope you have a wonderful Mothers Day!

- With my love -

Mission Statement

Today we celebrate Christ’s ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke’s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark’s account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus’ name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ - a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corporations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ’s messianic mission on earth. © J. S. Paluch Co.

Signs Like These

I admit, I have not seen demons expelled by the name of Jesus, snake-handlers, or poison-drinkers. I have been in places where ecstatic speech is spoken, but the phenome-non was not given to me. I have seen some people healed by the power of prayer, but many more who remained sick and did not recover. Signs like these are very rare in the church, after twenty centuries. But I have seen signs of the power of faith that are just as miraculous to the people who experience them. I have seen alcoholics stop drinking and reunite with their long-suffering families. I have known people whose lives are darkened by depression lift up their faces and see the light. I have seen those injured by the memory of a difficult child-hood freed from the burden of the past and able to receive a future of happiness. I have known those tortured by a life of sin rescued from their demons through the power of love. Signs like these happen all around us. We need to believe in them, testify to them, and live them out coura-geously. If ascension means being lifted up, then all of us know what that is like. And we all know someone who needs to be lifted up through our efforts. God’s Word is Alive by Alice Camille,

In Preparation for Next Week

Questions of the Week

If a sacred wind blew through your life, what would be blown away? If a holy fire was lit in your heart, what would you be led to do?

Reflect on experiences you have had of being forgiven, or being able to forgive. How is this peace central to the mission of the church?

Action Response

The fire of Luke, or the forgiveness of John: Choose the Pentecost that God is calling you to express. Invite the Holy Spirit to be manifest in you, and be willing to follow. God’s Word is Alive by Alice Camille,

Fireside Theatre’s “Church Basement Ladies” Thursday, June 7

Come with us on a return trip to the Fireside to enjoy “The Church Basement Ladies” for “A Second Helping”. The year is 1969, and the world is changing. As folks protest the Vietnam War and women are demanding equal pay for equal work in their rural Minnesota community, the ladies of the Lutheran church basement kitchen are dealing with changes of their own. The fabulous Fireside lunch is included as well as a quick stop at Jones Dairy Farm in Fort Atkinson. Our bus departs at 8:45 am from the parish parking lot and will return at 4:30 pm. The cost for the entire trip is $98.00 for members and $101.00 for non-members. Registration closes very soon. To register, please complete the flyer in our March newsletter, or call Jo at 414-422-1123.
