ROMANS 13:11-14 Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. 2019 CYO Operation Christmas Candy

“I was ill and you comforted me, in prison and you came to visit me.” Matthew 25:36

The Missionaries of Charity sisters have once again asked us to provide candy which they will distribute to prisoners on Christmas Day. They recommend the following which are approved by the prison system: Hershey’s Kisses®, hard candies, such as Brach’s, Jolly Ranchers, and Mars minis. These need to be in unopened sealed bags. No loose candy can be accepted. Large bins labeled OPERATION CHRISTMAS CANDY will remain in the vestibules of the Church through today, December 1st. Thank you for your generosity in supporting this cause.

St. Mark’s CYO

Job Openings at St. Mark’s Do you enjoy cooking? Are you available a few hours each weekday to prepare meals? St. Mark’s is looking for a caring individual to help fill a void that will be left by our dear Donna Bailey, who will be leaving us next month. If you think this might be you, please call Linda @ 732-449-6364 ext. 111.

Is housekeeping your thing? Do you love making a house a home? Then we might have a position for you. St. Mark’s is looking for a housekeeper a few days each week to keep the Rectory sparkling and in order. If interested, please call Linda @ 732-449-6364 ext. 111.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on the Second Sunday in Advent this year. Therefore, it has been transferred to Monday, December 9th. However, the obligation to attend Mass on this holy day has been temporarily waived. There is no Vigil Mass on Sunday night but Masses on Monday are at 7:30 AM and 11 AM.

What is meant by the Church’s doctrinal teaching that the Blessed Virgin Mary was “immaculately conceived”? Put simply, from the moment she was conceived by St. Anne and St. Joachim, she was always in the Light, never in darkness. Likewise, we believe that those who died in God’s friendship who are now in heaven are freed from all sin and the stain of sin. In heaven, they are always in the Light, never in darkness, because they have been rendered "immaculate" (from Latin, “immaculatus” means "stainless"). By giving Mary this grace from the first moment of her conception, God showed us an image of our own destiny. He shows us that this is possible through His grace.

The Immaculate Conception

Please note that distribution of the Chalice at Holy Communion will resume after Easter. For those with gluten intolerance, St. Mark’s has obtained an attachment to the ciborium for low-gluten Hosts which will be consecrated at every Mass. If you require a low-gluten Host, please go to the priest celebrant for Holy Communion. You no longer need to provide your own.

Please Pray for Our Military on Active Duty It has recently come to our attention that members of our military have expressed valid concerns that through the internet and social media, there is the potential for family members to be tracked down while they are deployed. For that reason, we will no longer publicize the names of family members in the service but ask you to continue to offer prayers for them as they serve their country with honor.

We are so grateful to all those who financially sacrifice every week to support our parish and its ministries! We would especially like to thank all of those who faithfully use their weekly parish contribution envelopes and those who give online through the Parish Giving Program.

Notice of Upcoming Second Collection: On the weekend of December 7th/8th, the second collection is for The Retirement Fund for Religious. Thank you for your generosity!

GIVING TREE 2019

Follow the instructions on

the gift tag for the type of gift and

whether to bring it back wrapped or unwrapped!

Spotlight on the Giving Tree Laurel House in Asbury Park

is a residence for adults who might otherwise be homeless. Each year the residents are included in our parish’s Christmas Giving Tree project. The requested gift is a $25 Target gift card for the individual’s personal use.

Due to so many giving generously, we had extra gift cards last year. As a result, the Social Concerns committee surprised each resident with a brand new pillow and pillow case as well as a gift card for a treat at Dunkin Donuts!

Everyone was delighted with their gifts! The committee members who attended the party were just as pleased to be able to bring such joy from St. Mark’s generous parishioners.

This year, they hope to be able to provide another “surprise.”

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7

12/1/2019

December starts Advent. Advent means the coming of the Savior Child, born poor to shower the world with the riches of salvation. This month we celebrate many saints, starting with St. Francis Xavier, founder of the Jesuit order. We also have St. Nicholas, St. Lucy, St. John, and St. Stephen to name a few. St. Lucy, an early martyr, was blinded before her death and is the patron saint of eye problems. Our Lady of Guadalupe is on the 12th and her appearance to Juan Diego as a lovely Aztec woman began the conversion of millions of Mexican natives. St. Stephen’s feast follows Christmas Day. He was the very first Christian martyr.

Who doesn’t love St. John, who calls himself the beloved disciple?

He was very close to Jesus, and at the last supper, even reclined his head against the breast of Jesus. He was faithful to the end and stood with Mary at the cross. His writings speak of God’s love: from the first letter of St. John: “…if anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God and God in him.”

This Christmas season let us keep praying for all St. Mark’s prayer petitions--the sick and suffering, the faithful caretakers, those suffering with depression, those families dealing with addictions, our Church, the need for more priests, and the need for more evangelization. We pray for our

country’s leaders to unite and take care of our people. We pray for all those in need. We surrender all to Jesus with the faith that He will take care of us.

I leave you with a little poem given to me by a close friend. God bless you all. “T’was the evening of Christmas and all through the night, dwelt this sweet gentle silence and brightness of light. Shepherds were startled by angels on high, and were told of a Babe, born in Bethlehem nigh. Hosanna! Come see the Messiah, promised from old, all wrapped up in cloth to keep from the cold. Dear Mary and Joseph knelt by His side while shepherds looked on with eyes opened wide. We adore you, we adore You sweet Baby King, for to our hearts peace and salvation You bring! Amen.”
