THE PASTOR ’ S CORNER by F r. Ree s Doughty
OF TWO POPES
he recent Netflix film The Two Popes about the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and
the election of Pope Francis has fostered a lot of talk. I was reminded of Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code which set tongues wagging years ago. A fictional work, it suggested a sinister intrigue within the Vatican to hide a marriage between Jesus and Mary Magdalene which, if it became known, would upend the Church’s life and practice. I was surprised how many parishioners read it and how many asked me if it could be true. The Two Popes is speculation and nothing more about the relationship and conversations between Benedict and Francis. It’s a mostly imaginative production which derives wholly from the personal impressions of the popular media. The best review/critique I’ve read is by Bishop Robert Barron, of the Word on Fire Institute. In his piece, “The One Pope” [see https://www.wordonfire.org/resources/article/the-one-pope/26140/] he lauds a moving portrayal of Francis’s past and praises the acting of Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce (and their uncanny resemblance to the characters they play). He, however, finds the portrayal of Pope Benedict to be a tedious mischaracterization of the man as a rigid and conservative ideologue which belies any claims by the film to be anything other than propaganda for a “preferred vision of Catholicism.” Would that the filmmakers had used the same literary approach for Joseph Ratzinger that it had for Jorge Bergoglio. Of the former, Barron writes: If only we had had a flashback to the sixteen-year-old boy from a fiercely anti-Nazi family, pressed into military service in the dying days of the Third Reich, we would understand more thoroughly Ratzinger’s deep suspicion of secularist/totalitarian utopias and cults of personality. If only we had had a flashback to the young priest, peritus to Cardinal Frings, leading the liberal faction at Vatican II and eager to turn from preconciliar conservatism, we would have understood that he was no simple-minded guardian of the status quo. If only we had had a flashback to the Tubingen professor, scandalized by a postconciliar extremism that was throwing the theological baby out with the bathwater, we might have understood his reticence
regarding programs advocating change for the sake of change. If only we had had a flashback to the Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith composing a nuanced document, both thoughtfully critical and deeply appreciative of Liberation Theology, we might have grasped that Pope Benedict was by no means indifferent to the plight of the poor. He concludes: It would have made not only for a fascinating psychological study, but also for an illuminating look at two different but deeply complementary ecclesial perspectives. Instead, we got more of a cartoon. I suppose we should take note that the world at large seems so interested — oddly — in the papacy. That interest might be explained from the fact that Benedict is the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415 (to avoid a schism), and the first to do so on his own initiative since Celestine V in 1294. Lately, however, it was announced that the Pope Emeritus had penned several contributions to a book by Cardinal Sarah commenting on priestly celibacy. The recent Synod on the Amazon had raised the possibility of ordaining “proven” married men to supply for the lack of clergy in remote areas. There was a great din in the press with speculation about and calls for the end of celibacy. Groups on the “left” and the “right” have squared off in a vicious war of words. One wonders that the debate has taken on the character of the preoccupation that the Protestant Reformation (i.e., Martin Luther) had with celibacy. Until now, we’ve mostly heard the practice described as “mere” discipline. In what I’ve read of Benedict’s thoughts, who is at his best when he comments on scripture, there are reasons to believe celibacy of the priesthood and its importance for the celebration of the divine liturgy is, from both Old and New Testament sources, from revelation, that is, divinely inspired. From the Depths of Our Hearts is to be released in the United States in late February. It is already garnered frenzied attention from the press including suggestions of intrigue and that Benedict should keep his mouth shut. That prospect would deprive us of “one of the most intelligent and spiritually alert Catholics of the past 100 years” (as described by Bishop Barron) and of a precious voice to guide us in the spiritual life.

Feast Day January 23
“Let us make the very best use of the precious moments and do all in our power for His dear sake and for His greater honor and glory.”
St. Marianne was the rst Franciscan woman from North America to be canonized, and the 11th American saint. A woman of great valor, this beloved mother of outcasts, spent her early years in central New York where she served as a leader in the eld of health care, education, and of her own congregation. Responding to a call to care for the poor sick, she devoted 35 years to caring for those af icted with Hansen’s disease on Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii.
The Safe Environment Initiative is intended to make employees and volunteers in the parishes of the Archdiocese of New York more aware of the warning signs of child sexual abuse and how to prevent it. The trainings provide the correct methods to report suspected abuse both in the State of New York and the Archdiocese of New York. Find a training at virtusonline.org.
